So, I got Blind Guardian's new album.
It's terrible.
What's wrong with it?
Well, it starts out great. Sacred Worlds is a brilliant song. There's a great vocal performance by Hansi and the orchestra doesn't seem tacked on at all; it's actually very well-used. It's followed up by Tanelorn (Into the Void), which is pretty good, but nothing amazing. It's like the halfway point between filler and a decent song.
Then we get a generic mid-tempo plodder and two whiny half-ballads before Valkyries. An okay song, I suppose. It's almost sort of progressive, but that doesn't stop it from being boring. What really grabbed my attention was the solo. Not because it was amazing, or anything, but because I swear it's the same one they've been using in every song they've ever written.
After Valkyries there's Control the Divine. An epic little number with good guitar and drum work. I can't call it amazing, but it's one of the better songs on the album.
After yet another whiny half-ballad we get A Voice in the Dark. This is the true highlight of the album. It's fast, agressive and catchy. If you consider Power Thrash a real genre, this is its epitome.
The album finishes with Wheel of Time. It's not really all that bad, but you'd be better off just listening to And Then There Was Silence again.
Maybe saying "terrible" was a bit harsh, upon listening to it again, but it's still not a good album.
