I think A day to remember is an alright band. They have some songs that are catchy and put me in a good mood, even though there's nothing revolutionary about their music. I can understand why some people like them a lot.
I'd rather listen to them than any generic neo-thrash band.

Talent as it applies to playing an instrument is only part of the equation. It says nothing about the bands capabilities when it comes to style and creativity. That "shitty scenecore writing style" is their writing style. If they were to make anything that wasn't their style it would be somebody else's. That they enjoy and would like to produce that kind of thing doesn't bode well for anything they produce that might lean more towards "extreme metal".

At 8/3/10 08:15 AM, ZpLiNtEh wrote: elitist prick.

God dammit. You know part of the reason I typed up like 20 paragraphs trying to explain why this is ridiculous is so I wouldn't have to hear this bullshit in here ever again.

At 8/3/10 09:36 AM, ZpLiNtEh wrote: For example I hate R'n'B because it requires no talent whatsoever

Yet by your reasoning it must make your sister and friends much more "open minded" than you, at least when it comes to RNB, right? No. It just means you expect different things from your music than they do.

See what I'm getting at? I'm not trying to come off as an arrogant know-it-all, even if it may seem that way.

Well the reasons and extent to which people might find an inordinate amount of pride offensive are completely different but...

my taste in music is more widespread than yours

There's a definite air of superiority in the tone and implication of this. You think it advantageous to be able to enjoy more things but the very reasons for which you likely enjoy them don't interest Dalnaki so they ultimately mean nothing to him.

At 8/3/10 03:32 PM, HeavenDuff wrote: There is elitism and there is another thing called... "having taste".

Everyone has taste. Even elitists.

Chugcore, thugcore, breecore, crunckcore and all the ridiculous other "core" genres, are mostly all pathetic and boring uncreative genres...

They're pathetic and boring unless you enjoy the genre's these styles pull from, in which case you probably find some merit in less complex metalish sounding compositional sameyness, or what is 'safe' or otherwise uncreative, yes.

A lot of metalheads, like myself, believe that core is an insult to metal.

I don't even consider it as being in league with metal so it couldn't possibly be an insult to it like much of Groove and Goth are. Saying it's an insult to metal is implying that it has some effect or place in it, it implies a level of association which I frankly don't agree with.

It's antithetical to what I see and have always seen metals musical goals to be which lies somewhere in an evolution of rock that values compositional complexity, and/or extremity in some form or another. Which is pretty vague and simplistic but I don't exactly have a background in music theory so I reach my limits pretty quickly.

Core is basically a genre that takes from others, make it more simple, more commercial, more radio friendly.

While you may be on to something with simplicity, I don't see anything wrong with radio friendliness. There's a lot of metal that I would consider both good and reasonably radio friendly. Commercialization is of course bullshit.

I know people who listen to BlessTheFall, As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red and all that core music and who still believe, even though I told them countless times how wrong they are, that they listen to metal music.

I do too. They of course reject the idea that you would call their metal "false" because their scope is so small that their metal must therefore be "true". It's a nonsensical notion for them that what they base their entire knowledge of metal on wouldn't even be considered metal to someone else. It's just best not to talk analysis with people who have no interest in the topic or analyzing period. It usually leads out and straight back to the start with the person who disagrees and knows less about it left with an even stronger sense of validation than before.

It's been almost 2 years since I signed in to my newgrounds account. What's been going on in this thread?

So I haven't really been listening to any metal recently. Can anyone fill me in on what's going on in the technical death metal scene?

Good songwriting and tasteful technicality have been swept aside for dime a dozen Necrophagist clones and an emphasis, and FOCUS on technicality. Songwriting, riffs, guitar tone, and pretty much everything that makes a song interesting have all been stripped away so they can be super technical. Yawn.

Meh, I dislike metalcore because it's basically watered down Gothenburg (which also sucks) with some added boy band vocals. The fact that it's a commercial "genre" makes me like it even less. Not to mention that arguing with people about is useless. If they like that shit, I'll think they're gay. I won't try to "convert" them or anything as you guys so "generously do."
By the way, it's not an insult to metal. It's an insult to everyone's intelligence.

I also like how Gothenburg bands tend to fall into the metalcore trap, these days. Like Soilwork did.

About that thing you said on commercial music. It really doesn't matter if you like it or not. But commercial music deserves to exist. Music with sing along chorus and very catchy parts is not to be condamned and treated as shit. Music has to appeal to the feelings and singing along with your friends to your favorite melodic death metal songs is not something that should be dissed. That kind of music serves a purpose and is not automaticaly bad.

And about that thing I said on my few friends who like As I Lay Dying and the such... I don't care if they like core. I only hate it when they say it's metal.

I would higly recommand you listen to the album Antithesis by Origin. They are technical, brutal, they have one of the best song-writting you will ever find in Death Metal. They are very Melodic for such a brutal band and very catchy. While I really like all of their work, I think Antithesis is their best album so far. Songs you should definitely check are The Aftermath, Finite and Antithesis.

Another band you should check out is Blood Red Throne. They do not play super fast wank riffs, but you will definitely like how they work on the guitars and bass. My favorite album is Altered Genesis. Can't name any songs you should start with, cause this album is just awesome. Probably my favorite Death Metal record.

Blotted Science, while they are not really Death Metal, have enough DM influences to be named amongs these bands. There is not much I can say about them. They have awesome bass, awesome guitar, awesome drums. That's all you need to know about them. They will eat your soul !!!

I just started listenning to a band named Gorod. Their most recent record, Process Of A New Decline is very good :). Disavow your God, Programmers of decline, Diverted Logic and Rebirth of senses... are my personnal favorites on the album.

Fleshgod Apocalypse is another very good band. Not my favorite, but they have a very intense and technical style in their music. I don't know them very good though. But from what I've heard, they are great.

Oddly enough, I've not had a single argument with Dalnaki and he's actually recommended me some Manilla Road albums which I still need to check out. I only have Open the Gates so far which was the only album my sister could find to get for my birthday.

People flipped their shit on them and now they're perfectly fine because we've gotten used to their personalities (minus Alex since he's disappeared again). Yeah, I flipped my shit on him too, but now its just funny and in retrospect it is as well. There have been a lot worse people here than anyone who has posted recently. I can't say how much I hate it, I don't understand why do they even have guitars playing... seriously... I like Gorgoroth, Burzum, Mayhem, Armagedda and Blood Red Fog for example. But I can't understand bands like Conqueror, it's all about drums sounding like Machine Guns, and have guitars making noise. I even tried to listen to another song and I felt like I was listening to the same song. If they play something like Black Noise Metal or something... then scratch what I said...

Also, other day I was with a friend and she showed me Ishtar, and really... it was the most boring piece of shit I've ever heard, it was like 2 or 3 chords, played over and over again really FAST! Yeah! Raw! They're so raw, I would like to congratulate them, they suck. And the vocalist... damn... he has no vocal talent... And the drums, well... boring machine guns...

Yes I'm pretty angreh today.
