Been listening to Hour of Penance's new album pretty much on repeat all week.

So much awesome.

This signature makes use of various clichés and/or 'emotional' lyrics/quotes, hopefully it makes me appear deep.

Nah, stoner metal and DBM have specific sounds. Viking is hotly debated, but it's usually just based on lyrical themes.

You know, there's a video series on YouTube called Metal (and rock) That Sounds Like Other Metal (and rock). It's exactly what it says on the tin by showing you similarities between a few songs, although non-metal bands are thrown in the mix as well hence the commas. You could see it as someone trying to prove metal is "repetitive" or "unoriginal" but personally I find it fun for someone to make strange comparisons between Running Wild and Opeth.

I don't know why they brought this to court. Surely thousands of bible books have been destroyed by metalheads by now so why pick on one person?

By the way, Behemoth are no where near as bad as Trivium. They can rip off At the Gates and Metallica in the same song and become famous millionaires.

Oh, ok.

For stoner metal I already guessed it was not only about the lyrics.

But for Depressive Black Metal... how can you be a 100% sure?
I know Wolves In The Throne Room are classified as Atmospheric Black Metal
Austere and Xasthur are classified as DBM...
But I find more similarities between Austere and WITTR, then Austere and Xasthur...

The vocals sure tells a lot though. Even if you don't look at the lyrics, the tone in of the voice and the screams are different. Usually in DBM, you can feel despair and depression in the vocals.

I don't know much about these specific genres of black metal, those are simple observations I've made from listenning to three or four bands.

No matter what one thinks about Behemoth, calling them "commercial" because of their sound is pretty absurd.

Pretty absurd. I refuse to listen to them after seeing a poster of them dressed in make-up and this extreme clothing. Why dress like that? Are they just THAT into their metal?

There is nothing wrong with acting. I think it's an important part of the musical universe.
I've seen Kalmah live and they really like to stick to their image. The vocalist when talking to the crowd between tracks would keep growling instead of talking normally. Twas funny :)

I can usually tell by the vocals. Burzum and Xasthur and Forgotten Woods all kind of have that vocal thing going. I dunno, DBM is usually a lot less aggressive. Less blast beats and such. A lot of it hardly sounds black, apart from the fidelity and the guitar tone and the vocals.

I undestand what you mean. But as you said, these are observations you made. You said there is specific structures for DBM and specific structures for Black Metal, but as you said, it's just generally speaking that these differences will be found.

When I asked if the genre was defined by specific musical structures I was talking about very specific things... like... what thash metal needs to be thrash metal.

Hey, gents; Anyone hearing this one band: Boris?

Pretty solid band for a Japanese group.

What a shame, Mister Jensen.

Isn't one of your favourite bands Slipknot?

Pretty sure they go A LOT further with theatrics than Behemoth.

At least Trivium gets called out for it more. Behemoth's albums rank higher than Trivium's on the MA.

Even to this day I still wonder why MA were dumb enough to put Trivium on their site.

No but I'd like to listen to a few more Japanese metal/rock bands. Just X JAPAN and The Black Mages aren't enough. I did listen to Loudness the other night on Bruce Dickinson's radio show which I only started listening to then. Fuck, why did I had to tune in shortly before his show gets axed?

Hey dudes. I'm new to NG but I'm a metalhead.
Can I join? I don't listen to very many new, active bands, but I'm hoping to find out about some good ones here.
Anyway, heres my list:

1. Exodus
2. Artillery
3. Evile
4. Slayer
5. Overkill
6. Extreme
7. Stormlord
8. Pantera
9. Megadeth
10. Accept

And two more I've just started listening two are At The Gates and The Agony Scene. I also like a few of Annihilator and Anthrax's songs.

Yes I know it's leaning into death metal at the end but old school death metal is similar to thrash metal to begin with, plus it'll help widen his taste.

Stoner is fine with me, cause yer Stoner bands generally have a more psychedelic thing going on compared with t'other Doom bands.

And depression isn't so much a lyrical theme but rather a feeling you get from actual lyrical themes like lonliness and what not. So it's Black Metal to make you feel the blues. I actually don't know, I've never listened to any.

I just randomly got a rockabilia catalog in the mail. they've got some pretty awesome stuff they don't have on the actual website. I think I'm gonna get a 9 inch studded leather armband. Fuck yeah.

Also I ordered my opeth watch from the people that actually go to their concerts and sell their stuff. I should have it within 3-5 days.

But yeah, I'm kinda climing out of my Psychedelic saftey zone. I actually started getting into stuff with My friend introducing me to Tool, Mastodon and The Mars Volta. Then I found Weedeater, heard about them touring with Sunn )) and Earth, and then I kinda got into Black Metal.
