Hey guys. I've recently really gotten into Iced Earth's Stormrider album. Is there any other stuff a lot like that that I should check out (Either by Iced Earth or a similar band)?

You said you don't want any synths... dunno if Wolves In The Throne Room are going to be any good for you, but their album Black Cascade is really worth it. And some Primordial

For raw black metal
Nattens Madrigal by Ulver
Ars Talionis The Art Of Retaliation by Balrog

Oh god the production is killing me, I have a feeling I'd really like most of that if it had better quality.

Well I like to hear what's going on instead of static. Like I already said I love Wolf's Lair Abyss. It's not terrible quality and it's not good quality.

Also profanum and Nachtreich.

Raw black metal doesn't have good production. The whole point of raw black metal to me is raw chaos. You won't find much well produced raw shit. I think if thats what you're after the best I can suggest is a universal answer in LLN, Torgeist or Vlad Tepes. Silva Nigra maybe. Perhaps some Pest Noir or Horna.

Response to Metal Hell 2010-04-08 00:48:49

Ugh. Peste Noire. Sorry. Anyways, I forgot atmospheric stuff you asked for. I'd say Deathspell Omega, Drudkh, Klabautamann or Darkestrah.

Well I have to second that, but only for Nattens Madrigal. The production for the guitar on this record is ear shattering. Everything else is alright. I usually do not care for the production, but the drums, bass and vocals are almost impossible to ear because of the shitty recording for the guitar parts.

But for Ars Talionis, the recording is alright. You really just have to get used to it. It took my a while but it is now one of my favorite black metal albums. I can listen through the whole thing and enjoy myself. As for Nattens Madrigal... I usually listen to one of the tracks and then I just can't take it and switch to something else.

No, their production is alright compared to the production of Nattens Madrigal (Ulver).
You can actually ear all the instruments pretty damn well on Peste Noire's records.

I know. That's why I recommended them.

He wanted raw black metal with cleaner production. Peste Noire has a raw feel with a cleaner production. Why do you say no to them?

Last night, I found out an old friend of mine in high school is playing in a band who are supporting Napalm Death at the Liverpool venue this month. That's quite an achievement to be supporting a big name in metal

Hell, even I like some of their music. I'll most likely get into them more at a later point.

While we're on the topic of Opeth merchandise, I love how they made babywear as part of their merchandise. Do they want me to get my five month old cousin to listen to their music? :P

I think I finally found what I'm looking for by "atmospheric". You see I'm not the best at describing music, by atmospheric and piano I meant neoclassical or ambient. Like Dargaard and Scythelence. Hell it may not even be metal but whatever.

Hey guys, how are you doing? Any news?

Took me a while to get on here again, but I might have some more time now (hopefully..)

Lately I've been digging some different stuff, like Pyramaze's "Immortal" and Alice In Chains' "Dirt". I'm still shaking my head over how Nirvana was more successful than the latter.

On a different note, I'm starting my own webzine these days (a plan I've been having for a while) for and about Greek black metal. Reviews, video blogs, articles. I'm trying to do a big thing here.

For all those who are interested in this, click here

It's still under construction, but I'm trying to make something out of it.

I'm doing great! After seeing Opeth with my sister and her fiance, we're thinking of seeing a few more shows this year. We're even thinking of seeing Iron Maiden and Heaven & Hell at Dublin. The only problem is the extreme cost to see them, book the flights and get a room at a hotel for one night and on top of that, the show is on the day before my dad's birthday. If this was in London, it wouldn't be so bad because that's where they live. Still, if it's possible, I will want to see the two bands live. That's Black Sabbath (to me, they're still Black Sabbath) AND Iron Maiden in one fucking night!!

That's out of the ordinary for you. However, I remember you not liking power metal very much (not that I have anything against that) but a few times, you've said you wanted to give the genre a better chance and I highly respect that.

It's a damn shame. Alice in Chains definitely deserve better recognition than Nirvana.

And, man, I'd simply love to go watch Heaven and Hell and Maiden in one night. (I wouldn't see them, because I would have a heart attack if I see them)

I still love Dio, together with Ozzy, he is the best singer in the world. Ozzy and Dio have great voices man, they're simply perfect for Metal... Too bad Ozzy is getting old, he is a living legend, a great man...

And Maiden?? OMFG!! They're simply awesome, their songs are fucking great, those mindblowing solos just fuck me up!! Hey Mut, you are a lucky man!!

Yeah, it's a shame, Nirvana is great, but I still think that Alice and Pearl Jam are better, their songs were awesome, they deserved a lot more of recognization... But w/out Nirvana, they wouldn't be famous...

I think that Nirvana and Guns n' Roses could still be great bands, but Kurt Cobain was a fucking idiot killing himself, and Axl too, he was a great idiot when he broke with the whole band, I think they could be great, such as Rolling Stones...

But, what can we do?? We're merely humans, we can't change the past.

Haha, I can easily understand that. It is something so awesome that it seems too good to be true. It's another reason why I think 2010 is a great year for metal.

But, what can we do?? We're merely humans, we can't change the past.

The problem with Axl is that he's still being an idiot about things. I'm just glad I was never a big fan of Guns n' Roses. Sure, I have Appetite for Destruction and Chinese Democracy (I know it's shameful of me to have but it was a Christmas present and technically I didn't waste a single penny of mine on it) but I'm no die hard fan.

Blackwater Park. It's the one album I always recommend because not only does it give you the best idea of what their music is like and not only is it their best (IMO), to me what Paranoid, The Number of the Beast and Rust in Peace are to the 70s, 80s and 90s respectively is what Blackwater Park is to the 00s of metal. You may not think that at first for Blackwater Park as Opeth aren't easy to get into right away. Just give the album a chance before throwing it away. I gave the album so many chances and now it's one of my favourites of all-time.

Haha, quite awesome! I'd love to see Heaven & Hell too, but I can't, I have to work. I'm still amazed at how Dio still puts this through, after all the cancer complications....the man is indeed GOD.

Oh, things change, you know. I mainly got "Immortal" due to Matt Barlow's presence. I really like his voice - (I guess he's the only redeeming factor for albums like "Something Wicked..."). Man, I also like some Nocturnal Rites, Helstar, Rage and similar bands. I like Power Metal with a thrashy edge and the less falsettos...the better :)

It's a damn shame. Alice in Chains definitely deserve better recognition than Nirvana.

Indeed.
