I have never heard of To The Metal, is a Gamma Ray album?

Weird.

Anyway I think their new stuff is leaning towards more traditional heavy metal like iron maiden than power metal.

Which I don't mind, LOTFP2 was good IMO.

I don't like them that much. Although The Metal Opera by Avantasia was awesome.

Yeah, they released the new album in January, it has some good songs, plus, Michael Kiske sang on one of their songs.

To those who care: http://www.anathema.ws/

It's called "We're Here Because We're Here", this is the tracklist:

Thin Air
Summernight Horizon
Dreaming Light
Everything
Angels Walk Among Us
Presence
A Simple Mistake
Get Off, Get Out
Universal
Hindsight

and I, for one, am looking forward to it, altough I'm not sure if I like the title.

Yeah, I wouldn't say they are cheesy.
Avantasia may be a little more cheesy though..
But Rhapsody is only CheeseWiz compared to GammaRay :P

I don't find GammaRay cheesy, after all, it was their frontman that helped "invent" the whole power metal thing with Helloween, but I guess it's a matter of opinion.

Hello (I'm new here) but my favorite bands are:

Angra/Almah
Dream Evil
Disturbed
Killswitch Engaged
Bullet for my Valenitine

I listen to more power metal, but i compose more heavy metal.

Response to Metal Hell 2010-03-21 19:33:04

First 3 = Metal.
Last 3 = Not Metal.

We ask for a list of 10 Metal bands, so I'd say give us another 7 and then the powers that be can decide on your fate.

Agreed. First rule you should learn as a possible Metal Heller, no nu-metal or metalcore. The others may possibly tear out your heart and offer it to Satan. Prog, Death, Black, Thrash, and Stoner bands=Great.

He doesn't know that though. The rules have changed considerably since GC's first post.

Prog, Death, Black, Thrash, and Stoner bands=Great.

Metal = great. It doesn't need to be specific.
Also, you're forgetting plenty of genres in that pretty narrow list.

Those are just genres that pop up a lot in conversations here, so if he/she wanted to not be totally lost, some basic knowledge would be helpful. 7/10 conversations around here mostly have to do with those 5 genres.

We rarely talk about prog or thrash in this thread with the exception of a few bands...

Plus a lot of power metal knowledge would be needed.

That's me, not MiroDK. And the god's rock'n'roll is a quote from Venom's Black Metal. I just love that one-liner.

To be honest, I don't think guest appearances of Michael Kiske means that much these days. Sure, it was nice for him to make another appearance in a new album of theirs but Kiske does so many cameos in power metal albums that it's not so special anymore.

Yes, he's not that special, to be honest, I don't even find him all that great like most people say he is, there's a lot of better singers out there. But I can't deny that he does have a pretty good voice.

Sorry for the double post :( but yeah I need to change that, I just quoted some line from one of their song's (after all, IT IS my favorite band), I need to think of something more original, but only when I have the time. :(

It's not cause they are your favorite band that they are not cheesy. I must say that all power metal is cheesy to an extent. When you start singing about glory, conquerors, epic battles and... space odysseys... chances are you will have some cheese on your album.

Well, I agree with you there, but I don't think they're as cheesy as a lot of other power metal bands (maybe that's just my bias talking). Well, the sound's still good, except their new stuff wich seems a lot more like they're plagiarizing stuff, or making sounds that resemble a lot of other bands. (mainly Judas Priest and Iron Maiden).

Very technical Metal, that you can't use to headbang...

It's really just metal played on a higher scale than what would be considered normal. It doesn't have to be super complex or have clean vocals and acoustic solos.

Into Eternity, Gojira (Maybe), Angra, and Queensryche. Cynic and Death are pretty progressive too.

I still think he's a great vocalist, it just doesn't have that "WOW!" factor like it used to, especially when it comes to guest appearances.

I wish Gamma Ray could tone it down with the homages to Maiden and Judas Priest, especially the latter. The song To the Metal was basically a cut and paste of Metal Gods. I don't mind hearing similarities here and there but that was overdoing it.
