Voivod
Nachtmystium
Evile
Lazarus A.D.

I don't really know any of the opener bands besides one or two songs per band.

NEED SOME SONG RECOMMENDATIONS, NAOWWWWWWWWWWWW.

You could easily do a summary of all genres. Of all the Metal genres most of them are nonsense.

Traditional Metal
Death Metal
Power Metal
Progressive Metal
Black Metal
Thrash Metal
Doom Metal
Grindcore

That's what you could narrow it down to, but even then that would still be a lot.

I really don't think it would be.
You write a 10 minute speech doing it, it really wouldn't be hard.

I got recommended this band called Bloodshed on Facebook today. They look quite new, and I figured that they were core since the person who recommended me them came from my school.

Surprisingly, they are great. I really like them from the first few songs so far. Here you can listen to their stuff.

What do you think?

exactly. There was a 400 page book written on solely Black metal and it's history, so Combining all the genres would be easy.

I need precisions about what exactly is the meaning of the prefix Post when talking about genre classifications. I know it means that it comes after something. So when they say Fallout3 is a post-apocalyptic videogame. I can understand, because the story takes place in a world that came after a nuclear attack that ravaged the earth.

But what exactly makes a genre "post-something"?
Let's take the example of bands like If These Trees Could Talk. That is always classified as Post-Rock. Or Alcest that is sometimes classified as post-black metal. What exactly can determine this?

If a band is classified as post-rock, we have to asume that their music is somehow related to rock music. So if it's rock, why not call it rock? And if the band only take elements of rock to make another genre of music, why is it that we do not create a new genre name then? Cause if they are just vaguely influenced by a genre but that they play something else, than they need to be classified differently.

I know the term is used when a band transcend a genre, bring something new to the genre or push it to another level. But the bands Death, Cannibal Corpse and Origin are all classified as Death Metal. Origin is not classified as Post-Death Metal only because they sound almost nothing like the band Death.

And what would justify the use of the term "Post" instead of the term "Neo"

Cause when Malmsteen plays Far Beyond The Sun, we do not say he's playing Post-Classical Metal, but Neoclassical.

So... there is Neofolk, Postpunk, Post-Rock, Neo-Metal (or Nu-Metal), Post-Hardcore.

And anyway, what the fuck is post-hardcore?!? I once asked an ugly emo kid about what the freakin hell his ugly yellow t-shirt was and he said it was a post-hardcore band.
Post-hardcore sounds exactly like any generic shit core band. Wtf?!?

I really need an answer so I will stop saying I like Post-Rock to people without being able to pinpoint THE FUCK WHAT IS POST-ROCK :O

Post-hardcore, in my opinion, is a band that plays emocore but don't like that label. Really, every post-hardcore band I know has at least a member with a fucking fringe... anyway... emos... at least post-hardcore is better than Jonas Brothers and shit like that.

Yes, but when a band falls into the classification Post-Rock, what are they?

Yes yes, that's what I said... "updating the sound" or "bringing it to the next level". But Modern Death Metal is nothing like Old-school Death Metal. Yet you don't see metalheads sticking the Post prefix to it.
Anyway...

I do care about the name of genres because they help me to regroup my bands under genre classifications and that can really be helpful to find new bands you like.

Anyway, instead of explainning me what the prefix post means, I would like to know how a band can be Post-Rock. Because I really like that band named If These Trees Could Talk and I know they are classified as Post-Rock. So I would like to know what are the characteristics of Post-Rock.
Thanks fellow metalheads.

Well, I never heard of a "post-rock" genre, but I searched wikipedia and found this, maybe it'll help or something.

Post-rock is a term of rock music characterized by the use of musical instruments commonly associated with rock music, but using rhythms, harmonies, melodies, timbre, and chord progressions that are not usually found in rock tradition. It is the use of "rock instrumentation" for non-rock purposes. Practitioners of the genre's style typically produce instrumental music.[1][2][3]

There's more here.

The name is just what its called, why? I don't fucking know. But its just what it is. Why Rock? Why Metal? Why Jazz?

That kind of makes sense I guess.
I've also came to the conclusion that post-rock often take from metal for riff constructions and song progression. I understand it's rock, but If These Trees Could Talk do not sound like your generic progressive rock band. I think they sound more like Progressive Metal in the song structures, but they use melodies and riffs that are more common in Rock.

No, you do not get it.

There are basic genre classifications. Like Metal, Rock and Jazz. These, if you don't know the musical genre itself and only look at the name, will never give you any kind of understanding of what the music could be. Except of course if you look at the word "rock" and think "well, rocks are hard, so maybe it's heavy music." But anyway.

There are other classifications like Progressive, Technical, Symphonic, etc.
And THESE classifications, even if you don't know about the genre of music itself, are quite easy to understand. Even if you don't know what Death Metal is, you can guess that Technical Death Metal is a genre of music involving a lot of technicality.

And the prefix Post means: After, subsequent to.

So basically post-rock would be something that is subsequent to rock. So it would be somewhat rock-ish, while still being something else.
That is still not giving me any precisions on what could be the caracteristics of post-rock.
