I need precisions about what exactly is the meaning of the prefix Post when talking about genre classifications. I know it means that it comes after something. So when they say Fallout3 is a post-apocalyptic videogame. I can understand, because the story takes place in a world that came after a nuclear attack that ravaged the earth.
But what exactly makes a genre "post-something"?
Let's take the example of bands like If These Trees Could Talk. That is always classified as Post-Rock. Or Alcest that is sometimes classified as post-black metal. What exactly can determine this?
If a band is classified as post-rock, we have to asume that their music is somehow related to rock music. So if it's rock, why not call it rock? And if the band only take elements of rock to make another genre of music, why is it that we do not create a new genre name then? Cause if they are just vaguely influenced by a genre but that they play something else, than they need to be classified differently.
I know the term is used when a band transcend a genre, bring something new to the genre or push it to another level. But the bands Death, Cannibal Corpse and Origin are all classified as Death Metal. Origin is not classified as Post-Death Metal only because they sound almost nothing like the band Death.
And what would justify the use of the term "Post" instead of the term "Neo"
Cause when Malmsteen plays Far Beyond The Sun, we do not say he's playing Post-Classical Metal, but Neoclassical.
So... there is Neofolk, Postpunk, Post-Rock, Neo-Metal (or Nu-Metal), Post-Hardcore.
And anyway, what the fuck is post-hardcore?!? I once asked an ugly emo kid about what the freakin hell his ugly yellow t-shirt was and he said it was a post-hardcore band.
Post-hardcore sounds exactly like any generic shit core band. Wtf?!?
I really need an answer so I will stop saying I like Post-Rock to people without being able to pinpoint THE FUCK WHAT IS POST-ROCK :O
