You know what I just realized? There are so many different kinds of genres and sub genres that I really should just stop trying to keep track. From now on I shall only only use the general genres.

Good idea. I only keep track of the major ones, such as Death, Black, Power, Thrash, and Proggressive.

By Genre do you mean a whole general genre such as metal or rock or country? Or very specific genre. I consider Folk metal to be a sub genre ( heavy/ black/ death/ prog) and not a whole genre ( rock/ metal/ country)

I second that.

Don't forget folk metal.

Response to Metal Hell 2010-02-01 22:42:11

Spork, what the motherfuck are you talking about? You were just arguing that folk metal is not a real genre, which it is. It is a sub-genre of metal that combines the sound of metal with folk music. The name folk metal obviously does not tell you what the music is about. That doesn't make sense. Folk is a style. Folk has existed since forever. Every part of the world has its folk music. IT'S FUCKING FOLK MUSIC. Folk metal is purely a stylistic description. Viking metal on the other hand, is not a genre and is simply a (dumb) way of saying that a certain metal band's lyrics are mostly about vikings. It is not even a legitimate metal sub-genre. There are lots of bands pulling this shit. They pick a theme and call themselves " ___ metal". pirate metal, pagan metal, etc. It can be any style. But folk metal is actually a true, existing genre. So this -

At 2/1/10 07:34 PM, TheSporkLord wrote: Neither is Folk. Viking metal doesn't describe the sound in any way, just what their songs are about.
Folk metal doesn't describe the sound in any way, just what their songs are about.

- is wrong

At 2/1/10 07:54 PM, TheSporkLord wrote: Still not seeing how Folk describes the sound. I understand how it can describe what the song/band is about

I can't, actually, unless you actually sing about folk music. Folk refers to the sound and not lyrics, so that's a strange thing for you to say.

At 2/1/10 08:23 PM, TheSporkLord wrote: Mythology, folk beliefs. When I here Folk I usually know it has something to do with Personal religions, beliefs and such.

See, like I was saying before, folk metal may often be about mythology and such, but not as a rule. It can be about anything as long as it is still folk metal. You could write a folk metal song about robots if you wanted. It wouldn't make sense, but you could.

And what are folk beliefs? really, man.

At 2/1/10 08:58 PM, Zodir wrote: Good idea. I only keep track of the major ones, such as Death, Black, Power, Thrash, and Proggressive.

Yeah, everything seems better when you're high.

I thought I recognized everyone, parts of my body kept going numb, some of my muscles would randomly tense

Well, I can't identify with that.

and I rambled on and on about all sorts of stuff.

Nah, 'cause it didn't hurt. Cramps hurt real bad; this just felt like I was moving my legs when I wasn't.

So I had a chat with my friend yesterday and he asked me if I'd like to take on the job as vocalist on a full time basis. It's official, I am now Shadow of Intent's vocalist.

Next practice is Thursday, so I'll be ready for that and seeing if the guys like my taste in music for a list of potential covers to perform, while we get some of our own stuff written.

Congrats on joining the band! :) I was trying to see if I could find anything about them and is this the real deal?

I did forget Doom Metal. But I don't really count 'Heavy Metal' as it's own separate genre. It's just metal to me. And I thought sludge was a sub genre of Doom. To help clarify this, could you maybe give me some sludge metal bands to check out?

To be fair it kind of is. It at least Doom's half-brother.

Sludge bands to check:
Dystopia
Lazarus Blackstar
Iron Monkey
Rwake
Accept Death
Grief
Buried at Sea
Weedeater
Bongzilla

No, it is. Judas Priest, King Diamond, Iron Maiden, etc.

yeah, true.

To help clarify this, could you maybe give me some sludge metal bands to check out?

Rwake
Baroness
Isis
Pelican
Acid Bath
Kongh (thanks to Ponos)
Bongzilla
Tides
Snowblood
Lento

And I'm sure Weedeater is good, but I don't remember them. I'll get reacquainted with them some time. I have some Buried at Sea, but haven't listened. also still need to look more into Dystopia.

My point exactly.

They left their babies in the wilderness if they weren't packing heat from birth. The army was the sole focus of the society. They fucked shit up for a living.

Some other sludge metal bands I've heard of:
Mastodon: I got their "Blood Mountain" songs. I also heard that they have "Crack the Skye" out.
Soilent Green: They've toured with Dethklok once.
