Mastodon sounds like just a straight up heavy band. Are they?
King Diamond sounds Power
Metallium sounds Heavy
Abigail Williams sounds core
Between the Buried and Me sounds emo/scremo
Job for a Cowboy sounds core
I agree, names normally do fit the genre. However, The Black Dahlia Murder are not core. At all. I really urge you guys to give them a chance.

No. Listen to Manowar, then Mastodon.
Manowar are your quintessential Heavy Metal band. Mastodon are a bumfuck of different genres.

No they are not...

Dunno
Abigail Williams sounds core
Not a lot more core than TBDM...
Between the Buried and Me sounds emo/scremo

right for this one

I think they are somewhat core, but more Melodic Death Metal anyway. And why do you ask us to give them a chance? What's so wrong about having core elements? Just as long as you are not a breakdown-freak band...
At 1/3/10 08:55 PM, greensucksbluerules wrote: Most bands with long-assed names are core or emo.
Also grindcore and symphonic black bands like to do the same :P
At the Gates sounds like a really core name, but it's not a core band.

No you don't need to be evil-looking to be metal. But it's easy to make the difference between a core band and a metal band. You would never see stretchy shits in these guys ears.
fffffffffffff I hate the stretchings, because they make themselves look core/emo/scene
ruins the metalness :|
though if they sound metal that's ok with me..

mmm well they have breakdowns...I think, haven't listened to Iconoclast for a while but Endzeit has a pretty epic intro from what I remember.
I've been bothered by this ever since I started to get into metal...
Yes, I'm talking about the shit classification name given by mainstream medias and non-metalheads to my favorite music... Heavy Metal.
What in the freakin fucking shit is this name classification? Heavy Metal? Was metal even heavy when they first started to use this classification name to all of what really is called METAL.
Heavy Metal is a specific genre in the Metal Universe, it describes bands like Iron Maiden and Metallica, just to name the most well-knowned.
And what is so heavy about metal as a whole fucking genre including over a 5 million bands in the world? The fact that they are using guitars? No, cause otherwise every single genre like Rock, Punk, Funk, Ska could be classified as Heavy Punk, Heavy Rock, Heavy Funk...
Maybe it's the fact that there is distorsion on the guitars? No, cause it's still the same for other genres of modern music. Hard Rock stands for bands using heavy distortionised guitars. Yeah, probably right. But everything that is metal isn't heavy... especially when talking about Power Metal, Symphonic Metal, a lot of Progressive bands like Spastic Ink.
I know why someone who doesn't know shit about metal would like to classify the whole genre as Heavy Metal. But since when was it to the uninformed part of the population to decide how a genre should be classified?
What's fucking worst, is when metal bands use this freakin term when talking about themselves. I have heard it from bands like DragonForce, Slipknot (I know they are not metal, but nu-metal... even knowing that, they still talk about themselves as Heavy Metal) and a few others, can't remember all the names.
What I really hate about it is the very pejorative use of this term. When non-metalheads say "Heavy Metal", there is always the "yuk" face associated with the word "Heavy".
Cause being heavy is for kids and immature adults. All these asses see about metal is the heavy, dirty, alchoolic part of what the mainstream medias want to show of it.
When people ask me: "So you like Heavy Metal?" I always answer: "No, I like Doom Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal, Progressive Metal and Thrash Metal."
Normally it teaches them that they shall never use this "Heavy Metal" cheap classification term in front of me again. And if it doesn't work then I just tell them very clearly that they are wrong to use this term.
If you disagree with me... please just explain me why it should be Heavy Metal and no just Metal? It makes no sense, it's stupid and missguiding.

If they don't like them, their loss but like you said, they are very different to most power metal bands and as a matter of fact, I wish there were more bands in power metal that stood out of the crowd very well like Blind Guardian, Helloween, Rhapsody and several more do.

I'm thinking more of songs but that might have been just Fall Out Boy. Awful titles and unnecessarily long.

I'm OK with people using that term to describe the whole of metal since heavy metal seems to roll off better. If I want a genre to describe Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, I'll call them traditional metal.
Anyone here listened to High on Fire? I haven't listened to them much, but the other day I heard a few of their songs and it was fucking amazing. Really sounds great.

I fuckin love you <3
I skate :p haven't been for a while but once the ice clears up I'll get back into for sure, its fun as fuck and a good way to exercise I spose, plus several of my mates skate so that's good.
What metal bands make you think, "Whoah, these fucks were on some serious drugs".
Mastodon and Cannabis Corpse :P
And what metal bands make you think of love.

I love High on Fire. I currently rate them as my number 1 most critically underrated band. I just love everything they've done, and there isn't a song they have I don't not like. I saw this analogy on the internet somewhere: The Stoner Metal Motorhead. Pretty good comparision I think.

Duff, stop your bitching. It's called heavy metal. If you want to describe Manowar and Maiden, you use the term traditional metal. But getting pissed enough to write a whole post because metal has the word heavy in front of it is sad and fail.
No really. It pisses me off naturally. I don't even think about it. When people say it, there is always this little lag in their voice and this "I want to vomit" expression in their faces when they bump on the word "Heavy".
You say I'm bitching? I think the term is missleading and that Mainstream medias and non-metalheads shouldn't choose for us, how we have to classify our music.
Plus... Heavy Metal sounds really gay...
It just sounds pretentious and makes me think of Judas Priest's vocalist whenever I ear it.
So tell me, do you want metal to be like this?
really? :P

Has anyone here listened to Ayreon? Pretty intresting prog metal "band" (even though it is two guys with a shitload of famous guest muscians). Anyone know any other band similar to their style, which I seem to start liking a lot.

BTBAM is very screamo/emocore/metalcore/deathcore/NU metal.
In my opinion, those five genres are all subgenres of the same genre.
Like how power, thrash, black and the like are all subgenres of the term "Metal"
I think they are somewhat core, but more Melodic Death Metal anyway. And why do you ask us to give them a chance? What's so wrong about having core elements? Just as long as you are not a breakdown-freak band...
If you are influenced by core, at all, chances are you are shit.
As for your argument against the term "heavy metal"
I completely agree, the term is used way too broadly.
VH1 considers anything from Slipknot to metallica to Iron Maiden to Twisted Sister to Poison to Marlyn Manson all "Heavy Metal"
But people are just stupid.

Well when the termed was coined, Heavy Metal was bands like Judas Priest and Queen and stuff. Muisc was different in then. Everything was different. Distortion and things like that were new. Listen to the song 'Rumble' by Link Wray, first use of distortion. That song was banned due to the influence people thought it could have. That was heavy back then.
And all the other genres of Metal didn't really start until the 1980s. The term was kicking around for at least 10 years before those existed. So Heavy Metal was just the Traditional Metal we acknowledge today (though I myself prefer the term Heavy Metal, due to its connection to those early roots - which I think is the entire point of that sub-genre).
Heavy Metal is just the term that Metal evolved under.
Getting upset because you don't think all Metal is 'heavy' is retarded. It's like complaining that Rock music doesn't actually involve any rocks. Or that Death Metal is generally made by the living. Or that Black Metal is almost entirely the product of white folks.
It's just a name at the end of the day. Means nowt.
