You really can't compare a black metal band with one album to a progressive metal band with nine albums...

That's like comparing a thrash metal band with one album to Helloween, who have like thirteen albums - It doesn't work.

Lantlos isn't just black metal. They're more Progressive/shoegaze then anything. And you can compare them because they're fairly similar.

A better analogy would be Enslaved > Opeth then. In fact, that's a perfect analogy.

That's not an analogy.

Opeth are more skilled and more meaningful, but Opeth are less "boring" and much better headbanging material.

I saw both bands together in may, only some people liked enslaved as everyone loved Opeth.

Except a few 13 year olds who were there who said it wasn't brutal enough.

If this is how you do it then I'll say that my favorite group is Dethklok after that some good cannibal corpse, midness self indulgence, maximum the hormone(some japanese metal band yeah I like asian metal bands, I can't understand it but it still good to my ears),and ect.(I have in fact a memory problem not alzeimer but I can't remember anything unless someone say it )...

Whoah whoah whoah. Opeth > Enslaved.

Opeth is just a taste not everyone likes. The first time I heard Blackwater Park I couldn't understand it and hated Opeth.

That is because that album is easily Opeth's weakest apart from Ghost Reveries.

Seriously, The Leaper Affinity and Bleak are the only not mih songs on that album.

The Drapery Falls is also mad boring, I hate it when people say it's there best song.

Orchid, Damnation and Still Life are by far the three best Opeth albums.

I'll take some peoples lyrics seriously.
But when you talk about Helloween's lyrical credibility I can't help but scoff :P.

If a band takes lyrics seriously, I'll take them seriously.
For example, The Cure I'll take seriously. The Smiths I'll take seriously.
DragonForce I shall not.

Bah, philosophy in music like this doesn't fit at all.

I disagree, you could whack some kind of nihilistic philosophy to it.

Then you probably won't like Riverside much, they are basically as subtle as a metal band you could possibly get.

I'm all for subtlety. But Opeth aren't good at it.
April Ethereal is a great example of what I mean. It's just dully strummed chords.

I mean, I suppose I still like Opeth, because I used to love them and its not like I can't enjoy their music. But my interest in them has plummeted.

I was listening to yours actually(Because it was you, and I trust your opinion more than Mothballs)

<3

it is much better, but the vocals are a MEGA turn off - They sound so bad.

They fit the Post-Thrash sound they're going for. Swings and roundabouts.

Plus the video was retarded. hahaha

The video is great and you know it!

Several things:

1) To those who predicted Helloween's Unarmed re-recording album would suck, you were so right. I just heard the preview and MY GOD! What the fuck happened to them? I always disagreed with those who called them pop or "Disney metal" but now I can't say a thing against them. I expect to hear crap like this from Disney Channel, not Helloween. The only song I have a slight interest in is The Keeper Trilogy. The rest of them, shame on you Helloween. BTW, these opinions are coming from someone who actually ENJOYED Pink Bubbles and Chameleon so this is saying a lot.

2) I've been put off spartans thanks to 300.

3) On the subject of Meshuggah, they do have some enjoyable songs but I do find it difficult to enjoy most of their songs. If you like them more than I do, that's cool.i

4) Speaking of Devin Townsend and SYL, I'm curious about Devin's solo albums so which albums are the best to check out first?

I honestly never understood what everybody sees in Opeth. Maybe I'm just one of those guys that only likes angry stuff, or just don't like progressive metal. I dunno man, I've tried them over and over again and I can't like them. Whatever.

I'll cut you some slack on this one. At first, I couldn't get into Opeth but as I got another album of theirs or two, I begun to like them a lot more all of sudden and now they're one of my favourite bands and I can't wait to see them in April.

I'm still amazed at how my sister got into them so quick. I thought it'd take her some time to get into them but after a few days she was saying how awesome Blackwater Park was.

These will give you a good preview of his music.

Ocean Machine: Biomech
Terria
Synchestra

But with Devin every album is always so different.

So I just checked out Grand Magus, seen them mentioned a few times around here, I think mostly by Ponos and Sensey?

Anyway, fucking loving what I've hard so far, which is mostly stuff from their new album. Will be definitely checking them out much further (:

What is this blasphemy? It's not metal at all!

Just because they have an orchestra, doesn't mean they have to use it every second of every song to make it not-metal.

On the subkect of Helloween, I think Keeper of the Seven Keys should replace Stairway to Heaven as the end all ballad of rock/metal.

It just offers so much more. In fact, I think I'm going to make a T-shirt like those Led Zeppelin ones, with the lyrics of stairway on them, and put all fucking thirteen minutes of that song all over the fucking t-shirt.

I'd second Bruce's shout of Terria and I'd add Ziltoid the Omniscient, just because I find it really enjoyable in a GWAR kind of way.
But Terria has Earth Day, and thats brilliant :).

I'm still amazed at how my sister got into them so quick. I thought it'd take her some time to get into them but after a few days she was saying how awesome Blackwater Park was.

I forced myself into liking them at the start. I think I bought My Arms, Your Hearse just so I could fit in or get accepted into this place. I felt so hardcore :P. But I was never overly into them, even if I did enjoy songs like Demon of the Fall.
But then I saw them live at Download '06 a few months later and I started to genuinely love them.
I think the reason for my decline in interest is that in 06 and 07 when I saw them live they played better songs from the albums I actually care about. Recently they've focused more on Deliverence and onwards.
