And I haven't listened to ANatO yet but even if its good, Nightfall is still an amazing album and the songs on there are stronger than anything else besides And Then There Was Silence.

And Then There Was Silence
Punishment Divine
Sadly Sings Destiny
Battlefield
The Soulforged

They're both Prog Metal. Thats all they need to be comparable. If they sounded the same that would be shite. The differences are good and shouldn't mean you can't compare them.

Hey guys, let's compare Megadeth and Kreator because they're both thrash metal with melodic elements, violence related lyrics and a sort of progressive feel in some songs.

Divine wings is nothing compared to Odyssey, vocally, lyrically and instrumentally.

Symphony X - Church Of The Machine

It looks like Seth, the rhythm guitarist for Behemoth, but I'm not 100% sure, just an educated guess.

Yeah it is Behemoth you can kinda see the right wing of their logo in the top left corner

All the songs on V and Odyssey have much more memorable rifts and solos. (Except out of the ashes I guess)

Twilight in Olympus has Church of the Machine.

And Through The Looking Glass, and Smoke + Mirrors, and In The Dragons Den.

V has - Evolution, Fallen, Communion and the Oracle, Egypt, Absence of Light and A Fool's Paradise.

Odyssey has Odyssey, Inferno, King Of Terrors, The Turning, Accolade II and Awakenings.

Exactly.

If someone told me they liked Megadeth I'd recommend Kreator to them, sure. Why not. Seems reasonable.

Your point didn't do anything :P.
Music doesn't have to be exactly similar to be comparable. Unique qualities and differences are essential in keeping bands interesting in their own right.
But at the core Dream Theater and Symphony X share many similar qualities. There really is no way to disagree that point. If you do disagree then you really don't understand music.

You seem to be under the impression that I don't think that V and Odyssey are also among the best They've ever done, which would be inaccurate.

Through The Looking Glass is one of the most beautiful songs they've ever made, along with A Winter's Dream, Edge Of Forever and Candlelight Fantasia.

Anyway I just re-listened to Divine Wings just now, so:

Accolade = Amazing

Divine Wings Of Tragedy + Candlelight Fantasia = Both great. (Divine wings, the song, is much better than I remember it.)

Of Sins and shadows + Pharaoh = Both really good (Still prefer Sins and shadows live version though)

Out Of The Ashes + Eyes Of The Medusa = Both good. (But they become old fast)

Sea Of Lies + The witching Hour = Both really boring with annoying chorus's, (Although great bass in Sea Of Lies)

My opinion, I own all seven SX albums and i'll rank them from most favorite to least favorite:

1.) V
2.) Odyssey
(Amazing albums^)
3.) Twilight In Olympus
4.) Divine Wings Of Tradegy
(Great albums^)
5.) The Damnation Game
6.) Paradise Lost
(Good albums^)

And I like to think of Symphony X(Album) has a separate thing all together. Why? Different singer, a lot less Progressive and technical and way more traditional power metal.

What do you guys think about Blackguard? They're gonna be in a concert I might go to in a future, and don't know if they're worth checking out.

What says you?

I associate Dream Theater and Symphony X in my head. They are definitely pretty similar.

i'd like to point out that Dream Theater is Symphony X's number one "similar artist" on last.fm and Symphony X is Dream Theater's first similar artist that isn't a solo effort or side project of DT.

Because they're both PURELY progressive metal, nearly ALL progressive metal are also another genre of metal - Whether it be power, death, thrash, etc.

(Although Pre-Odyssey SX has a lot of power metal and Neo-Classical metal elements)

So i finally got my new Municipal Waste stuff in the mail, it kicks ass. The albums vocals could use a bit of a kick from the Hazardous Mutation days, but i have only just listened to the first 3 tracks. The riffs and all sound a lot like The Art Of Partying, which is good. Im just sad there isn't any sign of drinking songs or other stuff like that on this album :(

the shirt/patch/badges/arm band kick serious ass though.

Response to Metal Hell 2009-08-27 06:18:58

I was trying to make a serious point. I listened to the first minute of it and then stopped. God, it was bad. Cheesey classical stuff with chuggs, it just doesn't work. Mainly because I like REAL metal that doesn't chugg a lot, and I like REAL classical music. Not that incredibly lame shiteness that is the first minute I heard of the Odyssey by Symphony X.
