The self-titled debut is fucking awesome and doesn't get the praise it deserves. Also get their latest, Witchcult Today. Then you will have a nice spread of very differentish Electric Wizard.

The Rite of Passage verdict:

Sounds like Systematic Chaos.

Playing on old formulas.

Very commercial poppy and lame.

They have no desire to make amazing music, they simply want to be a commercial pop band because it's EASIER and they're LAZIER and they want some cash and kudos.

Why am I bitching, they've been like that ever since ToT I guess. Maybe they've always wanted to be like that.

Anyway, I'm being pretty harsh. I hope the other tracks are more kick arse. Rite of Passage is ok.

It's pretty commercial pop rocky. But its alright.

I didn't read through all the discussion, but I'd like to discuss these arguments that so of you guys keep using all the time. Commercial and poppy. You keep using those two words as if they were undeniable proofs of a kind of lack of talent for a named artist.

Commercial? You mean commercial like Sonata Arctica? Cause I really can't see how it is bad to try to make some money with your arts, as long as it's not the main motivation to any kind of creation... it is just fine.

And poppy. Catchy riffs, simple song structures, very simple chorus. These are all elements of what you call poppy music. I already know your opinion on the subject, but Melodic Death Metal, Power Metal, a lot of Heavy Metal and a lot of Thrash Metal is poppy. And em... Black Sabbath... which is your favorite band... did write a song named.... Ironman... remember? And if that's not commercial and poppy... what is it?

IMO, as long as it's not abusive and straight down commercial shit, I can't see why it would be bad.

It's way too long but I like it. The shouts in the background before the chorus are irritating though.

Dream Theater have always made money, they have one of the most loyal fanbases in music.

And they're THE Prog Metal band, the basically synonymous with the genre. And simple song structures and very simple chorus' are the antithesis of Progressive music.
Dream Theater are being lazy however and refuse to be creative.

Listen to Images and Words, then Awake, then Metropolis. All brilliant albums and each one pushes the envelope in a new way. As Ponos said, since Train of Thought they're been largely on autopilot.

That is just a fact that you are stating Nev. But I was not talking about this situation in particular. I was talking about the use of the terms "poppy" and "commercial" as negative opinions in general. I was not talking about Dream Theater. Cause it's true that they really aren't writting anything new. But I thought Systematic Chaos was ok. My favorite will still be Images And Words :)

Well as the discussion was about Dream Theater their music being poppy and commercial is a negative thing.

And a lot of Metalheads don't like commercial and poppy music as its underground stuff (unless you're Metallica). I can understand resentment towards commercial music because there is so much good art being created in Metal (and other genres that don't get noticed) and its generally ignored by the mainstream.

And Ponos is allowed to think that Pop music is crap. Its his opinion, can't you let him have it?

I am asking him, why is it that "poppy" and "commercial" music would be all bad? If you didn't get this, just forget about the rest. What's the problem with me asking him a fucking question?
And I clearly specified that I was not talking about the actual discussion but about the over use of these two words as negative elements in music. Jez...

arrogant?!? Holy Fuck!!
How is it arrogant to ask someone why he likes or doesn't like something? I'm not assuming any-fucking-thing. This is a fucking forum, I don't see why you have to tell me what I should or shouldn't do. I just consider that there must be a reason why he thinks it sucks.

See...
this is opinion...
- I do not like Opeth, but Opeth is good.

and this is something that you defend as a fact
- this album sounds poppy, commercial and lame.

I'm not saying that he doesn't have the right to say this, but there should be a reason why he doesn't like it.

And why do you think that your own little philosophy of " There doesn't have to be some reason behind that", is an undeniable fact?
I'm studying human sciences (if thats the correct name in english) and we study the human behavior and psychology to explain everything we do. So I will have oppose to what you say... there is a reason to all human's actions.

And Ponos can answer by himself, thank you.
I think you are the one being arrogant right now... why do you always have to act like you have something to teach me?

This is what I never understand about people. Why do they need to have 'I think' put before something in order for it to be taken as an opinion? If someone says something, its their opinion irrelevant of how they phrase it.
'In my opinion Cob are shit.'
'I think Cob are shit.'
'Cob are shit.'

See, what I mean? They're all the same, its only the person speaking for himself.
And I'm not moaning specifically at you here, a lot of folk do it :P.

And why do you think that your own little philosophy of " There doesn't have to be some reason behind that", is an undeniable fact?

If its my own little philosophy then its not undeniable fact. Its just my opinion :). I don't think taste has to be justified. It can be justified, but the justification isn't the reason you dislike something. We're just able to point at what it is.

In fact, I really do not think you should say "I think CoB are shit." You can't write anything more pointless than saying something is shit, if your not going to explain why. I don't think anyone cares about someone saying "this band is shit". It's just irrelevant and will most of the time lead to pointless flame wars.
And as this is a place where you will meet people with different tastes in music, you shouldn't say "is shit." Again... it's just irrelevant... you should just say "I don't like CoB". It's easy, and safe :)

Still, you have your write to express yourself the way you want, but accept the fact that you will have to deal with the consequences if someone didn't get the meaning of your post correctly.

And as we were talking about Dream Theater. I'd like to get everyone's opinion on which of their albums would be their best. I don't know all of them, but so far Images And Words is my favorite.

Awake. Simple as.

Translation: 'I think Awake is their best album, in my opinion.'

Or A Change of Seasons, but thats an EP, and its only good for the title track. But at 24 mins its worth it.

The Lord Weird Slough Feg - Vargr Theme/Confrontation (Genetic Prophesy) (Traveller).

I actually listened to to that album before in its entirety for the first time. God, its good. The three tracks 'Vargr Moon', 'Vargr Theme...' and 'Baltech's Lament' are a perfect trio.

When did I mention vengeance? You have a very unique way of butchering my posts to find a completely random meaning to my posts. What I really meant was that if you do not express yourself in a way that would help you make yourself understood by everyone, you will have to deal with the consequences of how people will interpret what you say.

To clear some shit up:

1. Nev, I have reasons behind my answers. I don't hate poppy and commercial metal, JUST cause I don't like the sound of it. It's because.

I don't like the sound of it.

Damn you Nev.

2. Poppy and commercial being negative things? Well when the musicians creating the incredibly strong, powerful musical complex, skilled and beautiful sounding music held in 'Awake' turn down the creativity knobs and put out commercial sounding poppy lame metal, it's pretty damn negative.

Black Sabbath's Iron Man. It's the 70's man. Groovy. There is no commercial influence, no core, no emoness. Iron Man is just incredibly heavy marijuana blues rock jamming about a big metal guy smashing things, created by some of the most kick arse musicians ever.

Iron Man wasn't created to make money. And it certainly contained no traits of what was popular music when it was released. It was awesome stoners making music for their own enjoyment and pushing the envelope of rock. There's a lot of variety in the song as well. Iron Man isn't pop dude.

Basic basic lame sounding pop music influence shouldn't reach metal, and doesn't reach real metal.
