Have they actually dissed DragonForce before? I can easily understand people disliking DragonForce, but the only band I know they hated/made fun of is Dream Theater, and that was 2 1/2 years ago. Despite DT are one of my favourite bands, I listen to Mastodon because I enjoy their music, so whatever they think of other bands isn't that important to me.

I used to roll my eyes at people saying that that kind of melodeath is too radio friendly, as if that was reason enough alone to hate it, but I'm starting to see where they're coming from... fuck. Listen to Arsis, that'll cure your madness. I used to hate melodeath with a passion of a thousand suns but now I don't mind it as much since Arsis kicks so much ass. I'd recommend their debut, A Celebration of Guilt, it's perfect for blasting on your stereo as you're doing 90 on the freeway.

I have a great deal of respect for Arsis. A Celebration of Guilt is an incredibly awesome album. I don't mind Carcass or Hypocrisy's later stuff and I also still like Insomnium (lol) and Daylight Dies but it's this kind of stuff that I'm talking about. I'm not going to lie, I used to love this album and I still think the song is catchy but catchy isn't always tasteful. It's like it was intentionally written for radio. Pretty much. Using your talent =/= showing off. Now, showing off is what Yngwie Malmsteen does, where he plays a million notes per second with no regard to whether the song merits it or not. Now, to be clear, I do like his work, it's just that some of it comes off as rather trite because it's just him showing the world how fast he can play without any regard to melody. Sometimes it works, like when he did the Trilogy Suite, and sometimes it doesn't, like the entire Unleash the Fury album.
That being said, while Symphony X, Dark Moor, or Heavenly might be overly technical, it's usually with clear regard to melody and taste, and the technicality goes to further the music instead of ruining the music.

When I was in high school, I listened to Symphony X so much that I got sick of them for a little while. That takes a fucking lot. I would play at least a couple songs from V and Divine Wings just about every day.
I just picked up Skullage, the new Black Label Society release (its a compilation album, with a bonus DVD), and I gotta say that its pretty fucking badass. It has all their music videos on it plus some of their live performances. I'd say that if you like BLS, you should pick up a copy of Skullage.

For some reason I can't stand Zakk Wylde as a guitarist. I used to like early 90's/late 80's Ozzy, but for some reason I just grew apart from him.
It could be that half his songs have riffs like 0-0-0-1-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-1-0 repeat.
