Meds, psychiatric wards...ugh...

I don't like being reminded of these things, especially in light of my own mental issues, but I hope you get whatever relief it is that you need.

I've been hospitalized at the St. Vincent's psychiatric ward (it's in Greenwich Village, Manhattan) on three separate occasions--all involuntarily--and my experiences there were miserable. I'm still trying to forget as much of it as I can. I was sent for extreme depression-related issues (suicide threats, zero motivation, violent mood swings, etc.), but I also suffer from schizophrenia as well. I wasn't helped, only hurt, and put on drugs that made me feel worse than before. Hell, more than 2 years after my last discharge, it's fair to say that my problems have only been exacerbated greatly. Given the condition I'm in right now, most people would say that I absolutely need to be hospitalized. But I've learned my lesson, and I know modern psychiatry is going to continue to fuck me over like it has done in the past.

SOME melodic death metal is awesome, and since you were the one you said once that melodic death metal = Modern death metal I think you really have no idea what it is.

In fact you probably like some Melodeath bands, but just don't realize that it's melodic.

Also Darkane is awesome.

Well that's the stupidest thing I've ever seen in writing.

The only way melodeath is modern is because before the mid-nineties people didn't play melodeath, excluding Heartwork because that wasn't too bad. Now, when you pick up death metal albums from before the melodeath illness, you will find that they kick a bit more arse. The illness progressed, nu-metal, metalcore and deathcore all emerged. And now if you ask someone if they like death metal, they will just go on about how much they love Waking the Cadavar and See you Next Tuesday. I'm not trying to tune you all out, I'm just stating what's obvious.

The reasons I've said I hate modern death metal? Because of the illness I guess, and because of the production I guess. I just prefer that old thrashyier sound, instead of the clean glossy ones today.

I don't listen to any melodic death metal bands. The many I've listened to might aswell substitute the word "melodic" for, "poppy dancing music for you 13 year olds, because I want money and I'm not that brilliant at guitar".

Darkane don't tickle my fancy. Too pole-up-your-arse commercial tripe sounding.

And the reasons I said I used to like Cryptopsy's first two albums, and then I got into death metal? Because that's what happened. Now I don't really feel those albums. I can sense illness in them. And looky what happened, they went deathcore.

I was like fuckin Yoda and shit. I'm not fucking training you Annakin, I sense evil in your heart. And he grew up to be Vader.

..... I can't think of a Vader joke, I never listened to them.

lol, so your 16 now. Funny, your not any different from what you were before.

And as the other guys said, there is so many different bands falling under the name Melodic Death Metal, that you simply cannot judge of a whole sub-genre by making generalizations.

Now that you grew up a little ;)
you may be a little more mature. So I'll list you my favorite Melodeath bands, check out those you don't know, or maybe give a second chance to those you do know. If you don't like the music, it's alright, but you'll have to admit that there is talent, work, energy, agressivity and creativity in their music.

Here it goes

Amorphis
Arch Enemy
Arsis
Blinded By Faith
Children Of Bodom
Dark Tranquillity
Darkane
Ensiferum
Falchion
Kalmah
Nightrage
Profugus Mortis
Scar Symmetry
Threat Signal
Warmen
Wintersun

The bands that I have written in Italic are some that you should listen to really carefuly, as they are bands that I consider being awesome bands. The perfect example would be Threat Signal... they make a kind of progressive technical melodic death. If you could just put your hate for melodeath aside and listen very well, you would realise that it's a gold mine.
Just like Arsis, that can be classified as Technical Melodic Death Metal.

Btw, Threat Signal make the best Breakdowns :P

Oh and I saw somewhere that some stuff by Ulver was classified as Trip-hop and I'm not quite sure about the definition of this music genre, so if anyone knows a very good way to describe it, than feel free to tell me :)

Must you two keep doing this?

In other news, checked out Keeper of the Seven Keys Part 1.

While I'm Alive is probably better than all the songs on Part 2 combined, (and then some) the rest of the album wasn't very memorable. The aforementioned I'm Alive, Twilight of the Gods, and Halloween are the only songs that stick in my head. And Twilight of the Gods wasn't very good.

The only danger is everyone leaving due to non-stop arguments about Melodeath. Then this place being taken over by the people you're moaning about.

I was just reading some old pages last night, and everyone was telling Duff about how CoB suck. Now I'm getting told I'm afraid of different opinions? Goooooosh.

The problem with Rap is that it needs to be just right, otherwise it's going to sound a mess. The guy who wrote the lyrics for Last Resort kind of bailed out on a few of the lines, which was sad.

I never got all the love for Halloween.

Aside from the 'In the streets on Halloween...' bits, which are probably the most catchy sections of any song in musical history, Keeper is much better.

You could maybe argue that Halloween is more progressive than Keeper, though.

And also, I always thought they should have named it 'Helloween'.

I'm not fond of the chorus. I love the guitar solos and most of all love the verses.
MASQUERADE, MASQUERADE!
Grab your mask and don't be late...
GET OUT NOW!
With heat and a fever.. lar lar lar... TONIIIIGHHHTTT!

Both songs are brilliant though. There is no point in comparing them. Its better to just unite them and make them gang up on lesser songs.

You could maybe argue that Halloween is more progressive than Keeper, though.

I dunno. Keeper has more of a concept behind it. Like the dual solos at the end I always picture a fight between the goodies and badies and each them taking control over the fight with the swappage of solos.

But with each at 14 minutes at length its like saying Dream Theater are more Progressive than Symphony X.

Though they clearly are.
And also, I always thought they should have named it 'Helloween'.

They'd used up that pun in the name.

Rational Eyes and When All Is Said And Done are more likely to sound like technical melodic death metal.

And really... A New Beginning is a great song, with awesome progression and awesome structure. You call it pop, but I've never heard anything like it anywhere. You just consider your opinions as facts. There is a lack of any kind of structured analysis (or analyze... can't tell the difference) in your opinions...

I'm sorry for double-posting but I really have to make this clear.
Ponos is trying to make me look like a pop metal fan, but that's a fucking lie...

The difference between me and Ponos is that I can listen to many different music genres no matter how they are classified. And I'm not going to spit on a band just cause some kids told me they were not underground enough. I could make Ponos look like a Pop Metal fan just by stating the obvious fact that he is the biggest Black Sabbath fan in here... and you cannot get any closer to pop metal than Black Sabbath (let's not mention Metallica and Maiden please...)

the bands that I've listenned to the most during the last few days are
Origin, Agalloch, Ulver, Darkane, Blotted Science and Cryptopsy

You would also realise that I'm a big fan of bands like Equilibrium and Profugus Mortis if you'd check my last.fm charts.

I don't have to proove myself to anyone, but I don't like it when people have misconceptions about me (I hope I wrote that properly).

Whats so pop about them? Unless you mean popular, well, yeah, thats true.

But even then if thats all this arguing is about, because people listen to popular bands that are borderline mainstream then aren't we all pop-fags? The reason we found these bands is because they were there as a gateway to all this less-known kvlt vndergrovnd metal we've come across.

If you don't like popular music, stop giving your awesome underground stuff its attention, then less people will listen to it, the media/big record companies wont take notice of it, and you can take satisfaction in that.

this was epic practice for a uni assignment i have.
