That's probably the reason.

well I do listen to Cradle of Filth, Lord Belial, Dimmu Borgir, and stuff like that, so yes I get out of Raw Black metal, but I dont find Blind Guardian to be all that fufilling...If I aim to get pumped up I'll just throw in Finntroll's Jakten's Tid

Black metal = / = Power metal.

If you listen to black metal and then listen to power metal expecting it to be the same or even alike very much at all then you need a reality check.

What do you expect, dude? You listen to black metal and related subgenres, and power metal is about as far from black metal as you can get (within metal).

Thats the reason I dont like Blind Guardian...Power metal has never sounded good to me...except Helloween...which rlly isnt power metal.

I finally got off my ass and looked into Dream theater, I always heard they were just like symphony X only better in skill but not as good of songwriters.

Anyway this was the only song I heard, it seems much more like thrash metal + Keyboards than progressive and power metal to me.

Links to other good Dream Theater songs(That song was pretty good)

Dream Theater are far better songwriters than Symphony X.
Maybe not in terms of lyrics but musically they're compositions are superior.
The vocals in Symphony X own Dream Theater too but as I whole I find DT superior.

Anyway this was the only song I heard, it seems much more like thrash metal + Keyboards than progressive and power metal to me.

That riff is nothing like Thrash. Maybe its like a Megadeth riff but then Megadeth riffs are Proggier in the first place.

Right, here we go:

The classic 'omg Dream Theater' songs:
Pull Me Under
Metropolis, Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper

Two brilliant and overlooked tracks from Awake (their best album in my mind):
A Mind Besides Itself: II. Voices
Scarred

A lot of stuff there, so I'll stop. But those are some of their finest songs and from their second and third albums which really are the two best. If you're interested I'll indulge you further.

I'm diseased, I swear, I can't help but go into tangent mode whenever Dream Theater get mentioned :P.

You need to post ten metal bands to be allowed into the club.

However, from what I've seen so far, I doubt this club is what you are looking for.

anybody like Peste Noire (Black Plague in french)?

this also brings up a point...If I mention a band name that is in a different language, I will try to translate it, so you know what it means.

Peste Noire's most famous song (lol at famous...their underground) is Le Morte Joyeux, heres a link...like it or dislike it...its Raw DSBM (Depressive Black Metal for reference sake)...so if you dont like that genre, dont click :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMGO2ZN3S to

It has the lyrics to it, but they're in french, so dont bother reading them, unless you can read french xD

Roughly (and I mean roughly) translated they mean as follows:

"In a land fat and full of snails
I dig myself a deep pit
Where I can at leisure spread my old bones
And sleep in the forgotten as a shark in the wave.

I hate the wills and I hate the tombs;
Rather than to beg a teardrop of the world,
Living, I better invite Ravens
A bleed all my horrible carcass ends.

O worms! Black companions without ears and eyes.
See come to you a free and Merry; death
Philosophers viveurs, son of decay,

Through my ruin will therefore without remorse,
And tell me if it is still some torture
For this old body without soul and death among the dead!"

La Sanie and something called "Lorraine Rehearsal." I'm not really sure what it is, I got all this from a friend of mine, who got it from a mutual friend who loves depressive black metal and doom metal.

Do you guys class Symphonic Metal as its own genre? Or like me just consider it an unnecessary name for what is Power Metal.

Had a bit of a debate before.

I don't think of symphonic metal as it's own genre, but symphonic as a prefix makes tons of sense. Symphonic black metal is much different from regular old black metal, so it's fitting in that situation. But like, people who call Nightwish "symphonic metal" = no.

On a related subject, bands/fans who make up their own genres? Battle metal for Turisas, troll metal/humpaa metal for FInntroll, opera metal for Nightwish and Epica, norsecore for Marduk, and the like. Thoughts?

Good boy :).
I just see the symphonic element as part of their sound and in Power Metal - unlike Black Metal - an epic sound is implied.

Its interesting that I detest all these bands.
I think its a pathetic attempt at making your music seem more interesting than it is and to appeal to simpletons.

True, but there is power metal that doesn't really have symphonic elements. It would be really great if I could think of an example right now, but all I can think of can also be classified as speed metal (early Blind Guardian, Helloween, and the like).

Like making a name for your fans... I'm looking at you, Slipknot.
