Hence why I said epic sound. I see Nightwish's symphonic orchestra thing as what they do to be epic. Just the same as Helloween do their solo build ups and stuff.

Like making a name for your fans... I'm looking at you, Slipknot.

Unless you're GWAR :P.

On this whole Symphonic debate, yes, you can call it 'symphonic speed/black/power/death/etc metal', but not symphonic metal. Personally i think these silly 'Prefix + metal' names are stupid and everything should just be classified to the true metal genres.

Haha I don't feel that extreme about it. I mean, trying to describe Atheist as "death metal" doesn't really cut it, you really need to saying something along the lines of tech death. Same with like, Dimmu Borgir. Calling them black metal would just be silly, because they're quite removed from black metal

Ok let me rephrase what i said. Describing a band as 'Technical black metal' or 'symphonic speed metal' is all good, but keep it to saying 'oh yeah, they sound a bit like black metal with melodic elements to it.' or 'yeah, it sounds like melodic black metal'. But to go listing genres saying 'OH I LISTEN TO TECHNICAL POWER METAL, INDUSTRIAL BLACK METAL, TECHNICAL TECH DEATH, TECHNICAL MELODIC DEATH IM SO MUCH METALZ OLOLOL0LOLOL0LOL', i mean, it just gets way out of hand.

Speaking from point of view of me actually witnessing this on some little faggots Facebook.

My problem with Symphonic Metal is that it doesn't describe the style... so Metal with an orchestra somewhere. What if you're making music like Sigh and making large use of an orchestra?

Metallica's S&M album. I still call it metal :/ It never occurred to me to actually call it or describe it as symphonic metal. Though Stratovarius, Symphony (lol) X, Rhapsody, they can all be described as that.

No, because what does it even mean?
Its like calling it 'Guitar Metal'. Doesn't automatically make it Power.

you really shouldn't say that Megadeth is mediocre, thanks a lot.

At 3/22/09 12:36 AM, Nev wrote: Do you guys class Symphonic Metal as its own genre? Or like me just consider it an unnecessary name for what is Power Metal.

Had a bit of a debate before.

I remember that someone flammed me for saying that Nightwish is Power Metal...
the guy was like "NOES th3y R Symph0nci Metla u n00b"

I think we can add the word Symphonic to another genre like Symphonic Black or Symphonic Power Metal. Basically, I see it as a genre of metal with symphonic elements.

Yeah... maybe... but how should we classify bands like Agalloch than?

yes I did read you second post.

But for bands like Agalloch, there is just so much elements of so many metal genres to be found in their music, that it's really hard to classify them. Some of these bands are beyond classification...

You have a good point though. Some classifications are just useless...
"Technical Progressive Blackened Melodic Death Metal ftw!"

Hey guys !

I'm really interrested in bass guitar and I was just reading stuff about the band Liquid Tension Experiment and it made me think about the bassist of the band. I saw a few videos of LTE and I know that he's playing with a 10 or 12 strings bass. It's something we call a "chapman stick".
And I was just wondering if anyone in here knew some other metal bands that would be using a chapman stick.

Thanks.

Isn't it weird how Japanese metal bands release album after album after album, whereas the westerners take it slower and quit more?

Sean Malone from Cynic has used a Chapman Stick.

Perhaps not metal enough or overly so, but Tony Levin and Trey Gunn use/have used the Stick quite a bit in King Crimson. Check out the album Thrak and their DVD Eyes Wide Open.

I think those are unnecessary genres. They may describe their own music as that, but to me, they're whatever I go by with the actual metal sub-genres. Same thing applies to Viking Metal, but we already talked about that the other week.

Speaking of Symphonic Metal, I actually don't have much of it in my library. :o

Response to Metal Hell 2009-03-22 10:00:35

I considered symphonic metal and symphonic black metal both genre's.

But I don't consider Troll metal, fantasy metal, Opera metal, etc. as real genre's.

Although Video Game metal may become a genre in the years to come.

Dragonforce, Powerglove, etc.

Also I 100% agree with speedmetalsand.

For bands that are more than one genre I like to say "They are power metal, progressive metal and tech metal." as opposed to "They are a very technical progressive power metal band" or some stupid shit like that.

Also thanks for all the Dream theater, everyone!

I have never been able to listen to Battles in the North to the end due to its unusually lousy production. And I did not have this same problem with their earlier 2 releases! I will try again today since everyone is always raving about it being one of their best.

What do you people think of Blizzard Beasts and their last 2 albums?

Mettalica

Lamb of god

Megadeth (old music, the new stuff sucks ass)

Iron Maiden

AC/DC.

AC/DC isn't metal (they're hard rock) but the rest are good. List 6 more metal bands and you're in.

Listening to them instead of something better is like New coming to the US and going to Wyoming and not to Florida, New York, California, Massachusetts, Washington DC, etc.

Response to Metal Hell 2009-03-22 15:26:20

Now before anybody goes any further -

IRON MAIDEN ARE FUCKING GODS. BOW BEFORE THEM. THEY ARE FLORIDA, THEY ARE D.C., THEY ARE S.F., THEY ARE L.A., THEY ARE N.Y.

THEY OWN EVERY SINGLE OTHER METAL BAND IN EXISTENCE.

Don't badmouth them. There are no better bands, only bands that ape their formula more or less effectively. To be a good metal band is to ape Iron Maiden well.

That and my buddy J.D. will kick your ass if you badmouth them. He has all their albums, all their T shirts, has a snare drum signed by Nicko McBrain, and has 5 Iron Maiden tattoos.
