Manowar isn't the most influential band, but at they are influential at least a bit. They influenced Bathory, of all bands, when Bathory made Hammerheart and Twilight of the Idols, as well as the entire power metal scene.

Viking metal, however, isn't a genre in the slightest inasmuch as Dark Metal is a genre (it's not) or brutal metal (ditto) or epic metal (ditto yet again.) It's more of a description than a proper genre, as Viking metal bands run the gamut from being simply epic sounding Heavy Metal to being simply black metal with viking lyrics. Viking metal describes the lyrics, nothing more. It says nothing of the actual music.

Truly talented death metal. I love the drumming as well, it has a frantic jazz feel, and the latin elements make the band even greater.

This is what I've always thought about Viking metal. I always knew Viking metal just described the lyrical themes of the artist and not the music itself, hence why I never label any of my artists as 'Viking metal'. I always go by the genre they sound like when labelling them.
