Yes, hence the "core"

Confusing, a genre is a genre.

Okayyy, let's back it up then.

Metalcore is considered a subgenre of Hardcore, NOT a subgenre of Metal.

Which is why we don't talk about it here.

Other wise we may as well be called the 'Metal and Hardcore Hell'

Hey, I may think about joining this crew... I'm not much of a metal fan but it's growing on me. REALLY new to metal. (though I did go through a metalcore phase several years ago... ugh) I like a huge range of music, mostly electronica and alternative rock lol so kind of a noob here.

I like some more traditional metal like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth etc but what I've really gotten into lately is more along the lines of technical jazz/ hardcore metal I guess. (dunno much about subgenres, sorry) Bands like Cynic, Between The Buried And Me, and Protest The Hero. My favorite metal band is Between The Buried And Me. I'm a huge fan of complex music like jazz, and I love rythm, so this stuff really appeals to me. My favorite part about metal is the drumming. I've been trying to get into Meshuggah lately but it just hurts my brain (and my ears lol)

Any bands you guys would recommend based on the ones I listed above? I'm trying to open my mind to new music. I'm very very picky about vocals though, I really don't like those deep black metal growls or high squeals or whatever, I can't stand stuff like Cannibal Corpse, though I guess it's an acquired taste, no offense if you're a fan of them. And I like more melodic stuff, I prefer really fast thrashy stuff to horribly slow monotonous doom metal chugging, I never understood that. There's so much variety in metal and I'm always worried I'll piss someone off because of my opinions (pretty opinionated I guess) Plus metal fans kinda scare me sometimes XD

Prog Metal shuld be up your alley.
Dream Theater (great drummer and brilliant early albums). Check out Images and Words, Awake, A Change of Seasons and Metropolis, Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory for albums.

Symphony X (Divine Wings of Tragedy, The Odyssey)

Opeth (there are growls, but there is also amazing clean singing and the early stuff is very Jazzy. My Arms, Your Hearse is probably the best example of their earlier style whilst without being overly boring)

Death (again growls, but Chuck's aren't that that gutteral and you can understand him. I like The Sound of Perseverance but depending on who you ask the album of choice will be different, its all gold though).

Gojira (more growls, but again its not terrible. From Mars to Sirius is brilliant).

I never understood that.

It has atmosphere and energy. Its dark and evil. Its depressing. Its epic as fuck (if you're Messiah).
Its grand.

I gave Rwake a bit of a listen before. Only the first two tracks and I got cravings for Accept Death. Has anyone else listened to them?

There's so much variety in metal and I'm always worried I'll piss someone off because of my opinions (pretty opinionated I guess) Plus metal fans kinda scare me sometimes XD

Most of this thread consists of arguments so don't worry :P.
There is a diversity of taste here, whatever you like.

Which album? I have the S/T debut, Blood Fire Death, and Nordland I & II. Penis, you need to get Nordland. those are fantastic albums.

I mentioned the CDs I ordered the other day. The Bathory album I've purchased is Hammerheart. It's not here yet, but what did arrive today are Elvenking's Heathenreel and Fates Warning's No Exit. :)

Don't worry, you're not the only one. I find it difficult to get into most of death metal and I can only get into the most well known Cannibal Corpse's tracks. Despite that, there's still several death metal bands I like.

'Tis a sad day when I am listening to Metalcore out of choice rather than having it forced upon me by some shitty music channel.

'Tis an even sadder day when I actually like it.

wow...

I have been somewhat partial to Metalcore in the past, admitting to liking Trivium's earlier efforts and some In Flames and not finding Parkway Drive totally and utterly repulsive if only for their eccessive use of blastbeats and having been enduring indie shit all day when I first listened to them.

In Flames are Gothenburg Metal or Melodic Death... some of their more recent work sounds a little more "core", but em...

So, yeah, As I Lay Dying.

yup

I first saw them in an ad for Rockworld TV. They had the telltale signs of Metalcore; stop-start, chugga chugga riffs and a long haired vocalist utilising pseudo Death Growls as his primary singing style.

Yup, those are Metalcore growls...

My curiosity was peaked, though, as they seemed Metal enough from that 15 second long clip or so.

Listening to the title track from their latest album, An Ocean Between Us, I was pleasantly surprised. It was as Metal as Metalcore got, while still being blatantly Metalcore. The song structure was complex (enough), the vocals were good (enough), and the musicianship as a whole was not that bad.

not that bad? why can't you admit that they have fucking nice riffs, nice vocals and a nice song structure?

Although, I had one concern. The "Out of place, overly melodic chorus" as I like to call it. Breaking the flow of the otherwise aggressive song and reducing it to a pile of shit.

how are melodic chorus bad?
I like the contrast between Heavy and agressive riffs and some melodic chorus. And you could also try listenning to some melodic death and realise that they are doing exactly the same thing... well... at least some of them...

My fears were confirmed about 2 and a half minutes in.

However, I had realised something startling at this moment.

I did not care.

Save for that atrocious chorus, the song was not all that bad.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think I may have found some Metalcore that actually appeals to me.

Should I seek professional help?

No... you just finaly realised that you can like both Metal and Metalcore.
YES !!! I said BOTH !!!
YA RLY I SAID BOTHHHH !!!

Other than this, I have been listenning to some very nice viking folk metal recently, my favorite band, Equilibrium and another one that I just discovered named Finsterforst.
Fucking awesome !!!
Nothing to do with that shitty Turisas that some of you guys seems to really like :P

I'm more of a middle man, I don't hate nor love it. I listen to it pretty irregularly though.

Stuff like Edguy, Sonata Arctica and Stratovarious are among some of the bands I like.

===========

On another note I finally got around to checking out Novembers Doom. I start at their most recent work; The Novella Reservoir.

It's amazing, the Ultra Low and Deep sound of a Funeral Doom band played at Death Metal, albeit slowed down, speeds.

Here's the opening track for the album.

No, my point is to show you that my taste is varied. From what I can gather, you think I'm a powerfag. Angra may be one of my favorite bands, but fuck, so is Ulver. Until now, you've had the tiniest glimpse of my tastes in music. Judging by your favorites, we have at least two good bands in common: Sunn O))) and Acid Bath.

Unlike you, I don't segregate my metal. I like all the subgenres (or nearly all), and I appreciate all of the varied bands for what they are worth.

For the record, power is excellent. And I don't give a shit what you think about Dragonland, Symphony X, or Angra.

What you've done there is you've taken a band that have a lot of following due to a video game and deceitful studio albums and discredited the entire genre that they fall within. And then thrown in other popular bands like Metallica and Iron Maiden (I assume they were in your mind).
For a start, Thrash fans not being Metalheads is insane. Ever listened to a German Thrash band? And seen the people who listen to Thrash? Way more Metal than some skinny pretencious twat who listens to Avant-Garde Metal (theres gotta be a few in existence).

And Power Metal + Heavy Metal = Manowar.
