Okay, for fuck's sake, Jay (yeah I'm fucking calling you Jay). Grow the fuck up.

First of all, I like Burzum. And I like you. I'm not going to bullshit you here. I like everyone in this club, and you're not an exception. But you're being a douchebag and it's not okay.

Let me make this clear; you are soiling the brotherhood of the Metal Hell by your bashing of, well, just about anyone in this club who doesn't share your opinions. Seeing as your opinions are some of the narrowest I've come across, you bash everyone you don't fear or respect. It might be hard to understand, but you have to let people like what they want to like. If that means they like a bit of -core, so be it. If you think it's possible to get them into better music, recommend it, not force.

Second of all, your treatment of HeavenDuff is not okay. I don't know why, but it seems you have a personal vendetta against him. Perhaps because he gets riled up by your douchebaggery? I don't know.* But you really need to stop this. People wont always share your opinion, and you will get nowhere in life by being a contentious asshole to people you deem inferior to you. It may not be metal to enjoy life and have friends, but I'd rather be happy about who I am rather than bitch and moan all the time.

I realize I'm not a horseman or anything, and I realize I have almost no power to my word, but seriously. Fuck. Dude. You're being about as unmetal as it gets, and I hate to see an otherwise cool dude make such a bad name for himself, his music, and his brothers in the way that you are doing so.

You are becoming the metal hell equivalent of a freshman in high school, only you've been here longer than some seniors. Irish and Ryan are more mature than you; that's saying a lot, seeing as Irish is half your age and Ryan is, uh, Ryan (no offense :3).

In conclusion: be mature about things, you're better than this. You could easily be one of the coolest dudes in here if you would just stop being so bitchy and argumentative.

If you blow this off and call me a fag like you're so inclined to do, you're only proving my point.

In fact, the only good one man band I know is Wintersun, and it's not a one man band anymore.

A musician cannot really be a god at ALL THE FUCKING INSTRUMENTS, it's just a fucking fact. A lifetime is not enough to master all vocals, guitars, bass, drums (and some of them even go for keyboards)

I think that Jari Mäenpää is still the only musician who managed to do this.

Okay, that's really just not true. If you're good at guitar, you can usually be AT LEAST decent at bass, so that's two instruments down. Vocals? Vocal training, plus, some people are naturally good at vocals. Drums can be learned as well, given you have the patience. I know plenty of people who are good at these instruments. The reason people don't usually end up having solo projects is because they take a lot more time, and it's just a lot more efficient to have someone else playing a part for you. Session musicians, for example, are expected to have mastered multiple instruments. A session woodwind player has to be highly proficient in playing the entire clarinet family, the entire saxophone family, and the entire flute family. If you also know how to play all the double reeds, they think of them in the same way you or I would think of someone who plays guitar and can play bass. I don't know how much you know about woodwinds, but there's a bitchload of difference between a flute and a clarinet, and between a clarinet and an oboe, and between an oboe and a tenor saxophone. If a session musician can master 15+ instruments and make a living off of it, how is it possible that one man can't form a decent band playing four instruments, four instruments which are relatively simpler to play at that?

Also, since when does a musician have to be a god at an instrument to be considered good? If you listen to music on the basis of whether it is played by a group of virtuosos, I pity you. Music is about whether it has integrity, not whether it's mindblowingly difficult. Miles Davis, while good, was not a genius at the trumpet. What he did have was music practically dripping out his anus. He revolutionized an entire genre multiple times while living in the shadow of people who could outplay him ten times over. Look at the battle between Davis and Wynton Marsalis; Wynton is a badass trumpet player. But just about any jazz fan will say that Davis is the superior musician, because, unlike Wynton, Davis did not fear change and revolution. He didn't live in the past, thinking all he needed to get by was killer chops and technique.

And for the record, Jari Maenpaa can't play drums.

jesus christ I do my goddamn best to defend you and you go and post stupid shit like this goddamn you're making everything difficult for me

I don't want you to think I'm a COMPLETE dickhead. Anyway, I kinda feel bad because Burzum's song Black Spell of Destruction is really good. What did you say was wrong with it? The screams were random? No they weren't. Shitty riffs? The riffs are amazing. Bad quality? Production doesn't matter, music speaks for itself. I find the song really great.

A musician cannot really be a god at ALL THE FUCKING INSTRUMENTS, it's just a fucking fact. A lifetime is not enough to master all vocals, guitars, bass, drums (and some of them even go for keyboards)

Well, really, as a one man band myself, I find that if you write a song on guitar, and it's good. Well. Vocals don't matter. And drums, unless really out of time, don't matter either. Who the fuck bases their entire opinion of a song on the way the bass player plays? All the bass player and the drummer have to do is play in time to the music. And in most metal, it's the guitar riffs that matter. Vocalists don't need to sound amazing. Bass players don't need to be as good as Myung. And drummers just have to keep a beat. That's just my opinion anyway. Varg wrote some really dark and amazing black metal riffs. And to compliment them he just played the rest of the instruments. His drumming is fine, his bass playing is fine, a lot of people don't like his singing, but I find it rather fitting.

I find it really horribly sad when someone likes a band because they have an awesome drummer.

Primus fans :P

All the bass player and the drummer have to do is play in time to the music.

Bassists also have to back up the guitar chords, but that goes without saying.

Varg wrote some really dark and amazing black metal riffs... a lot of people don't like his singing, but I find it rather fitting.

God damn, finally someone understands why I like Burzum. All his shit works toward the mood and atmosphere, and it works. His screams may be nails-on-the-chalkboard, but I don't think he's going for melody.

I find it really horribly sad when someone likes a band because they have an awesome drummer.

Very true. A tight rhythm section is excellent, nothing wrong with that. But if they overshadow the melody, what's the point? The two should be ideally be equal, and failing that, melody should take precedence.

I feel a lot better now that someone shares my opinion.

Hahah well, there's a difference between an opinion and being wrong.

Hey, that's his opinion. Hahahahahaha.

Penis don't you dare insult bassists.

Look at Steve Digeorgio (sp?) from Death. He can outplay most other motherfuckers I know and he does it with a melodic grace; it's not just pointless Yngwie wankery.

Also, teh aforementioned Primus makes use of the bass as the primary melodic instrument (not to say that it's melodic like melodeath, but melodic as it drives the melody along). Death From Above 1979 (not metal) also make use of the bass being the main instrument (the only actually).

I used too many parenthesis; I'll avoid them next time.

Lightning Bolt and Japanther do the same thing as DFA (actually Japanther has keys but you know what I mean).

I'm mostly talking from a standard metal band standpoint, though.

I know about Lightning Bolt, though I can't say I've heard much from them, but Japanther is news to me. DFA uses keyboards too as far as I know.

Yes, I know.

In addition (shit, I'm being formal tonight. Fuck, parenthesis), I realized that Negura Bunget is the perfect inspiration for writing, especially somber stories or horror if you wish. I'm doing the latter right now and I feel it's working perfectly. After reading some Lovecraft and playing Call of Cthulu (a game that I bought for ten bucks, it's rather good and it's based on a Lovecraft story), I'm in the mood to write a supernatural horror story.

I wont quote D3NTATUS and PenisClown, but I do get the points you guys are bringing up.
In fact, what you said was right, you do not need to be a god to be a good musician. And I can also understand the fact that if your a good song writer, most of the time you should be able to put something really nice together.

Though I still consider that you can't be a beast at all instruments, and that the drums, especially in heavier stuff like black metal and death metal, is really important and takes a lot of time to master, especially for the speed and precision. A descent vocalist, can make the song good, a descent drummer can stay on the right tempo, a descent bassist, can do good rythms, but the fact is, that with only descent musicians, it's pretty rare that you can write a Masterpiece.

Also, I am not saying that technique his everything, in fact, I started my journey into metal music, by listenning to Power Metal mostly.
The most important thing is not the technique itself, but the capacity of the guy to write good riffs, good drum lines, good bass lines, nice melodies and stuff.
So you can be a very good artist, without being a beast at your instument. But a black metal drummer, needs to be able to do at least some blast beats, right?

Other than this, PenisClown, I do not believe that Burzum is pure shit, it's not my kind of metal though. I may have been rude, but that's mainly because I was talking to you... and I thought that you would only
throw a shitload of insults at me for not being a fan.
I don't think that the riffs were terrible, but I really do not like the vocals. I like agressive vocals, but these were just screams, and I find it kind of annoying.

Also, that's just a question, but Varg was a bass player at first right?
Cause when he was playing with Mayhem, that's what he was doing.

But em, since I do not really like that kind of black metal, is there any other good one man bands out there?

I know Burzum and Wintersun (except for the drums of course)
but that's pretty much it.

You have got to experience them live. They are quite unique and their show is like a massive wall of sound and you really get engulfed in the strange atmosphere. Their singer/guitarist is a beast as well.
