I don't know how much of answer I have to that. Many bands stop by NY, and that's just where I happen to be.

The way I meet band members is by arriving at whichever venue I'm going to very early (12-1ish is a good time), checking to see if they're standing around or exiting their buses/vans. Then I'll figure out when the best time is to approach them.

I've already seen and met RC before in February, so I know what to expect from them. I can't say that I care much about any of the openers, though. My ticket has Novembers Doom printed on it, but they dropped off the tour a long time ago and have since been replaced with Mantic Ritual. However, those guys just sound really generic, run of the mill thrash from the few songs of theirs that I heard.
