I will have to disagree, seeing as power metal was what started me off in Metal.

I have an argument for my side, at least towards the image.
When Metal started out, the IMAGE of metal was grim and dark, Black Sabbath wrote songs about grim, depressing things, like "Iron man" a man excluded from society and mocked, when he wanted to help. Then, he killed them all.

Stuff like that, was the FOUNDATION that metal was built on, then it evolved, into stuff like thrash metal, Slayer wrote songs about stuff like Josef Mengele, the "Angel of Death" surgeon in Auschwitz, that made brutal inhumane experiments on people in the Death Camp, and also Alot of Occult themes.

Then came death metal, Death wrote songs like "Regurgitated Guts", "Leprosy" and Cannibal Corpse wrote songs about pure Violence, Gore, guts, Rape and Murder, Other bands wrote about the Devil, or similar things.

Black metal wrote about Nihilism, Depression, Satan, Ancient Gods, and Anti-religious themes.

THEN suddenly Power metal pops in, And writes songs about fucking Elves, Rainbows, Jesus, Knights and Dragons, the good guys winning and all that SHIT.

totally NOT METAL.

Fuck that image bullshit, metal doesn´t have to limit itself to specific lyrical themes. Megadeth write songs about politics and relationships, are they not metal?
You can write a song about whatever the hell you want, it can still be metal.

Has anybody noticed how just about all the bands in the extreme metal (and punk) community are connected in some way?

I just noticed that Lee Dorian, who did the B-side Vocals on Napalm Death's "Scum" album, is also the founder of Rise Above Records, who label another one of my favorite bands Eletric Wizard.

These two bands are completely unrelated in terms of musicality, but yet so long as they are within the extreme metal umbrella of a genre, they are connected.

I have noticed this phenomenon occuring with multiple other bands and respective members of those bands. Many different styles of extreme metal are all bound by one common creed and culture.

It makes me proud to say that I am an aspiring extreme metal musician, to say that I can be a part of this close-knit underground community of people who share the same ideals and interests as I do.

Good point, but i look at metal as the music being played is what keeps it metal. You could sing about making a cake, but have galloping riffs and sweeps and shit running through the song, that makes it metal.

I don't care though, i still like power metal just as much as i like every other sub-genre.

You are aware that Power Metal didn't just "pop in". Glamour has been about in music since the 80s. It's not like Dio, Alice Cooper and Kiss had an affect on Power Metal, is it?

Dude. Lee Dorian sings in the stoner doom metal band Cathedral aswell.

These two bands are completely unrelated in terms of musicality, but yet so long as they are within the extreme metal umbrella of a genre, they are connected.

Hahaha. Lee just liked doom metal, so he played in a doom metal band. Making your own label must of just happened when they needed to put their shit out.

I agree, although I'm pretty sure power metal wasn't the last genre invented. I thought it sorta spawned outa glam in the 80's while thrash was coming out.

Hey!
Unholy Warcry
Power Metal sings about Epic Battles and Medieval Themes. That's Metal.

Also what about Gojira? They Play sweet as Prog Death and yet they sing about saving the world from pollution etc.

Defining music in anything by it's lyrical content is really lame. IMO.

But I understand where' you're coming from. Some of the things sung about in Power Metal are just plain 'un'-Metal.
But In Power Metal's case they make up for it with the music.

I'm glad there's smart people in the Metal Hell such as yourself. Those are my exact thoughts on metal. The sound is the most important thing. I could care less about the lyrical themes.

I also really dislike power metal, fucking blows. I don't mind some fast grindcore tracks though. So I got the new Berzerker album, better than Animosity, not as good as "self titled" (The Berzerker).

Only Dragons.

They always have some fantasy affiliation, most off putting.

Response to Metal Hell 2008-11-09 19:12:36

I like power metal.

To say that all power metal is about fantasy, happy-go-lucky, lacking in artistic merit, or just plain shit is a humongous generalization.

It's no better than saying that all grindcore is someone grunting into a microphone about gore and murder while the guitarists fuck around and play random chords, or that all black metal is some guy in his basement worshiping satan with the worst microphone he can find.

Response to Metal Hell 2008-11-09 19:19:51

Lyrics about gore and murder are just as fantastical as singing about dragons.
It's all bollocks either way.

Cliff Burton had holes in the knees.... Oooh, and Dead. He buried his clothes. Necro.

So I started listening to early Solefald, and I thought it was ok at first, but all the gothic tendencies, like the lame goth sounding keys and the Dani Filth screaming just put me so off that shit.
