It's been a long time. I started getting into more death metal like Necrophagist and Cannibal Corpse more. No doubt in my mind you know what I'm talking about. Does anyone know any other bands like them? I like their stuff, and I wanted to see if there's anything like it that I can get into.

Mmm if you like old Cannibal Corpse, try Six Feet Under. as for other death metal, try Deicide, Sepultura, Death, Children of Bodom, Unleashed, Demilich, Sodom, Arch Enemy, Devildriver...just naming a few random ones on my huge list, old and new

For those that said them, thank you for the kind words.

To clarify, I'm in quite a bit of financial trouble, as well has dealing with some BS at uni that I didn't expect along with dealing with family BS I thought I left behind years ago. Nothing suicide-inducing, but unfortunately very time consuming especially classes now and work (it used to be trying to get a job). Shit probably sounds lame, but I don't care because that's as specific I care to get at this point. Plus I just don't have as much time to kill online as I did before, and that's both good and bad.

Anyway, hi to the newbies. Its good that there are quite a few around. This club will always be the best on NG *waxes nostalgic*.

Fucking over-rated. They aren't that good or innovative, just thin on production and novel. I mean KVLT and super-cool.

Just because it was new at the time doesn't mean its that great. But those albums' reputation will always precede them.

Personally, I don't think "classic" should have anything to do with a band or an album. music should be judged by it's merits, not by it's reputation or influence.

Albums become classics based on their merits. It's just another thing in music thats defined by opinion.

Despite these two nice solutions (Nev's idea was great, I can't believe I didn't consider Greasemonkey), I've lost interest in my weekly charts after they took them off userpages.

I've never really heard people praising At the Gates first two, but I think musically it's pretty good. I like some tech death. At the Gates' first two and Cryptopsy's first two are pretty sweet. Recommendations would be cool.

I didn't mean classic like "wow everyone loves them i'll love them too" or "wow this must be good because of it's reputation" I'm saying the music is good.

All the metal boards I go to praise the shit out of those albums, but they do little for me. I like early In Flames and Dark Tranquillity more. The guitar is thin, but its more Iron Maiden influenced melody which I like. I also like tech death, just not as much. It is personal preference, but ATG's songwriting or technique isn't ZOMG to me. Its good, but not as amazing as I've heard other people say.

At 9/14/08 06:14 PM, Nev wrote: Albums become classics based on their merits. It's just another thing in music thats defined by opinion.
Exactly.

Nostalgia and innovation are merits, yes. But that doesn't necessarily dictate the album is good. How many albums do you know that amaze you at first but then fade quickly? And how many crappy albums do you like because you listened to them a lot in the past? I think the ATG's albums are a fairly rare combination of both.

My point isn't about innovation or nostalgia, but about decent music that has stood the test of time. Thats how I judge what a classic is in my mind.
Led Zeppelin IV is a grand example.

How many albums do you know that amaze you at first but then fade quickly?

I can only think of one, Systematic Chaos.
In the majority of cases I'll over play a band/album and then I won't care for it for a while then I'll have second wave of love for it.

And how many crappy albums do you like because you listened to them a lot in the past?
