What is this controversy of which you speak?
I might need your help again Sensey, I've been having trouble getting a specific album by Sigh.I can do that. I have all of their albums. Every one of them is good, too. :)
Sorry for the late-ass reply, I was working all day. :p
Alice in Chains is my favorite grunge-ish band, or at least of that particular era. There was some controversy if they are considered metal or not. In the end, they were deemed metal by Idio I think (sorry to put you on the spot man, but they are also on the metal archives). I don't care either way I still really like them so if you want, let me know.
I'll PM you or get you on AIM about the Sigh.
PONOS: It sounds like our musical progression was a bit similar, as far as tastes go. However much I avoided Avant Garde, I'm glad I'm getting into it now. Its good, so don't hesitate to jump in and get some stuff. You'll probably like it,
Bree-ing me the Whorizon >=(
I'm so so sick of that band.
I've seen at that "Fresh 'Til Death" shirt so many times around town, it's not even humorous anymore.
Just thought I'd vent after having to be around a large group of scenefags for my lunch break at school today.

I didn't know you started with the big four of thrash, moved on to black metal, discovered a love for folk metal and now prog/avant-garde!

I think i'll check out some Arcturus and Winds, but I don't know many others.

It would be LAFF for Goatchrist and Kidd.

Is that so? :OYes.
Avant Garde doesn't necessary mean weird and mental.
Oh, that's what I assumed Avant Garde was. Oh well, that sounds like it'll be easier for me to get into it. :)
There are cases, obviously, but bands you'll be introduced to in this thread won't be those cases.
Those bands you suggested, umm, I got different recommendations by Sense-Offender and claims it's better than what you have said. However, when I check the genre out, I'll check out both stuff from you and S-O.
Maybe I'll check them out sometime this week.

Solefald and Unexpect!!!!!!

Yeah I love Cannibal Corpse, Lamb Of God, Children Of Bodom, Marilyn Manson & In flames.

Solefald, Unexpect, Vintersorg and Arcturus are the only Avant-garde I have but I love them all. The only one that's hard to listen to sometimes is Unexpect, I find Flesh Aquarium to be kind of samey if I'm not in the right mood.
?

I thought the point was that you've not checked out Avant-Garde.
Don't try and impress us by lying >:(!

Considering my liking of AG came solely from Sensey's recommendations there can't be much difference.
I'm recommened Arcturus and I think thats it, we differ on which album we prefer, but thats all. We both agree they're brilliant.
And Solefald will be worth checking out too.
They're good for initiation.
Yeah, what Nev said.
I noticed Winds and Vintersorg were mentioned on this page as avant-garde. I'm not so sure about that. They're both great, either way.
And here's some avant-garde recommendations...
Arcturus
Ulver
Solefald
Sigh
Virus
Ved Buens Ende
Fleurety
Unexpect
Age of Silence
Peccatum
Maudlin of the Well
Kayo Dot
Fantômas
Diabolical Masquerade
Smile Carved Sour
Ram Zet (I'm still not into them yet, but I'm sure some will like them)
Thee Maldoror Kollective (Just get Pilot [Man With the Meat Machine]. I've heard their earlier stuff and it isn't good)
And there are some good bands that may not be considered avant-garde metal, but are still either experimental or sound pretty different...
Farsot (pretty weird black metal)
Blut Aus Nord (same as above)
Negura Bunget (NG won't let me use a certain character that's in the name) (same as above)
Aarni (experimental doom)
Gonin-Ish (weird extreme prog)
Behold...the Arctopus (experimental tech prog)
Mirrorthrone (experimental black/death)
Vindsval/ le Grand Guignol (crazy symphonic black with carnival aesthetic and hysterical laughing and crying)
I'm pretty sure I've left out some stuff, but whatever. One other avant-garde project that might be good (MIGHT be good) is Karaboudjan. I'm going to check it out if I can and see if I like it. There was only one 20 minute EP, so I'll try to get that.
In other news, I've been listening to Dan Swanö. good stuff. Since he does death metal, this makes the 3rd or 4th death metal project I actually like.
And they're not [Avant-Garde] Metal, its more a merger of other styles, but Peeping Tom (by Peeping Tom) is a fucking amazing album.
Highly recommended to everyone.

Yeah, but who would trust a goat and a kid?
I mean, Goats are hardcore, but one on the internet who is holy is strictly NOT hardcore.

You obviously know a lot more about the genre then I do but Visions From the Spiral Generator has always struck me as Avant-garde. The Focusing Blur less so, but there's bits of that which seem to be as well.
?
I got Sbrodj, the only album by Karaboudjan. I'm listening to it right now and I'm already wishing that there was more by this project. I'm liking it.

Well, I haven't heard either of those, so I'll check them out sometime. Well, I really just plan on getting all Vintersorg eventually.
And I'm already done listening to Sbrodj. It's not even 20 minutes long. Overall, it was a good avant-garde album, but it had some moments of pointless irritating sound. I wish there was more than just an 18 or so minute EP.

I'd definitely recommend them, they're both awesome albums even though I prefer his folk influenced stuff.

Uhh, never mind. Current likes are similar though! I started off with In Flames (Colony era) and Dark Tranquillity. (technically speaking Lamb of God and Shadows Fall before that when I was really young)
Whatever. YOU did it wrong, not me. :p

Arcturus is awesome, see Sensey's post above. I've been following quite a similar list.
My freind gave me a shit load of cds, however im too lazy to post them right now.
So...Paganfest is tomorrow and I can't seem to get it out of my mind. It's the last day of the tour, too, so it better be worth it.

so i got a dethklok shirt when i was up in the bay area. i'll try to find pictures of it on the internet. it's unofficial, i think, so the art style isn't like that of the show, it's more of a serious metal shirt. it looks sort of like a cannibal corpse album

The difference is that Metalheads tend to be serious when they say it, not say it just for attention.
But all the same it's something that doesn't need to be done.
