And you know, I'm actually starting to take a perverse liking to Nazgul. Guess I shouldn't have ripped on them so badly because now I look like a jackass.

Those vocals were so horrible, fuck I pity you right now. Also, lost my AIM when I reformatted my comp.

I thought about it and if you've listened to Solefald yet, their harsh vocals are similar in a way. Kind of screechy, which I can enjoy in the right context.

Also, lost my AIM when I reformatted my comp.

I love Solefald harsh vocals :).
Especially the really cold ones like on Queen in the Bay of Smoke.

I've been trying to stay away from avant-garde stuff, but it keeps popping up. The only stuff like that I have is Ulver and Vintersorg.

Avant-Garde Metal isn't that weird or wild. Its not much different from Progressive. Its just, different Progressive, less cliché, more interesting in some cases and such.

Even so, I can't see how they're very close to sounding like Pantera.

Yes.
Avant Garde doesn't necessary mean weird and mental.
There are cases, obviously, but bands you'll be introduced to in this thread won't be those cases.
Unless Patton is involved.

Jesu is pretty good. They're one of only 2 shoegaze bands I've checked out so far, the other being Alcest. I liked both.

Also, I'm not about to defend Pantera, but Cowboys From Hell and Power Metal were good albums. The rest, though.......no.

Yeah, the original starred Carlos Gallarda, who played a different role in Desperado. He was either Campo or Quino. I can't remember which. And I think he was a producer for Once Upon a Time in Mexico.

I'm a serious movie buff...

Really, almost every Ulver album is good. I just didn't like Teachings in Silence. It was boring and went nowhere. Other than that, it's all good, though the vocals in Nattens Madrigal are irritating.

I might need your help again Sensey, I've been having trouble getting a specific album by Sigh.

I can do that. I have all of their albums. Every one of them is good, too. :)

The only Solefald album that has vocals that bug me is the Linear Scaffold. That high pitched shrieking is difficult to endure.

Also, I really really hope there's a new Solefald album in the works. I'm dying here!

AVANT-GARDE IS THE BEST.

The only stuff like that I have is Ulver and Vintersorg.

I don't see how Vintersorg is avant-garde. His stuff is fantastic, but I think it's really just progressive with folk elements.

Actually, some of it is pretty weird, but yeah.

Also, I've seen no discussion of Fleurety here. You guys should check them out already. >:(

Examples? I've not really come across anything as weird as say... Moonchild :P.

I have Min Tid Skal Komme, and I started listening, but stopped cause I wasn't in the mood for Metal.
But I thought it sounded cool. Not what I was expecting from the album cover.

Unexpect is pretty weird and so is Fantômas. Kayo Dot can get kinda strange. The song Hustler by Virus is pretty strange due to guest vocalist Øyvind Hægeland's weird singing in that song. He doesn't sing like he does in Spiral Architect. The Peccatum album, Strangling From Within is also a bit weird, at least as I recall. It's been a while since I listened to it, though I own the album. When you have over 200 CDs (some with more than one album on them) some of your CDs don't get as much attention as they should.

Really, now that I think of it, most avant-garde bands at least have their moments of strangeness, whether it's weird noises or melodies that just sound different. I think that some of us here are already used to music that's sort of different. I've shown my friends some avant-garde stuff that put funny looks on their faces.

Well, thats the point isn't it. Being unique and different.
You might have a point about it being close to what people have listened to. Maybe I just don't see it cause I find it all fascinating, even the wacky shit Patton spawns.
I'm gonna let you have this one :).

I wanna see, wanna see them dancing.
Walking around on those... what do you call them?... Oh, feet.

Ariel's voice is sexy :).

And José González's version of Heartbeats is incredible :).
