I'd recommend Metropolis, Pt. 2 too. But you don't seem to be a fan of post-Moore Dream Theater. So just get Images and Words.

That's not true. I liked Systematic Chaos.

Although the song A Change of Seasons is probably par with Awake.

Dio - Holy Diver
Dio - The Last in Line
Dio - Lock Up the Wolves
Dio - Strange Highways
Dio - Killing the Dragon

I'm currently on a full-on Dio listening wave. I have rarely listened to any other stuff these days :P this man can do no wrong, it seems. Still have to listen to this "failure" record "Angry Machines". I'll see how that one's gonna turn out, but I'm sure it's better than its reputation.

Btw, I'm also looking for a new guitar to expand my possibilities. Which means, either a Baritone guitar, a 7-string or a nice new acoustic guitar. Any recommendations for the lower/middle-class price range?

No, its not. Its very popular and easy to find.

I own Awake, Train of Thought, A Change of Seasons, and Octavarium. Awake is 10 times better than all of them put together.

I thought that Black for Death was better than RfF.
I was greatly put off RfF due to 'Survival of the Outlaw' sounding like Lamb of God (or what I perceive LoG to sound like). Maybe I should just say Pantera.

Just to throw my two dickles out there about dream theater: I "bought" their discography recently because I'm going to see them in May. I've been listening to them in chronological order, and I'm up to Metropolis pt. 2.

On one listen each of every album so far, including live albums, I would say A Change of Seasons is my favorite, followed by Awake. I did really enjoy Images and Words as well, just not as much. Not sure about individual songs (though I thought A Change of Seasons was an amazing song and is probably why that album ranks so high on my list).

In short, is the later stuff as good? Any further opinions or extrapolations?

Oh. Ok then.

Its really not. Stream of Consciousness, A Change of Seasons and Octavarium (the song) are all either on par or better than anything on Awake.

Nope. There is no way Stream of Consciousness and Octavarium are on par with Awake. That is bullshit. Only A Change of Seasons is.

Like 6.00, Caught in a Web and Innocence Faded.

I fucking knew you would say that. I love those songs. Not Innocence Faded so much, but I love 6:00 and Caught in a Web.

I like both albums equally. i don't think of them as separate albums, just an album separated, you dig?

RfF, in my opinion, has more good songs (my favourite is Sun I Call), but BfD good songs are better. So it really evens out.

Either way Solefald win.

Finally, a new user with a list of more than 2 metal bands.

Lamb of God is somewhat borderline as far as metal goes, but the rest is all metal. Good job.

And props for including a band I've never heard of (Dååth), that doesn't happen often.

Get a 7 string if you want to expand and try/make new stuff. The only problem with that is it may cost a bit...

I enjoyed The Perfect Element Pt. 1, really the only downside I could find to the album was that the first track is kind of nu/alt metalish and the lyrics are just ... well kind of stupid, though it redeems itself once it reaches the solo. It's the only record of theirs I've heard but based on it alone, I'd say they're a pretty solid band and it's a pretty interesting and different album.

But they're a bit too generic and they shouldn't be, like a lot of the tracks on Octavarium for instance. Lacking originality.

Going over the albums I got last year on my MP3. (got a few others, but most of them weren't metal, so I'll count the heavier ones)

Kill 'Em All - Metallica
Master of Puppets - Metallica
Ride The Lightning - Metallica

The Monster Show - Lordi
The Arockalypse - Lordi
Get Heavy - Lordi

Sonic Firestorm - DragonForce
Inhuman Rampage -DragonForce
Valley Of The Damned - DragonForce

The Triptych [Special Edition] -Demon Hunter

The Varigian Way - Turisis

A Twist In The Myth - Blind Guardian

United Abominations - Megadeth

GC's demo (can't remember its name) - Shores Of Sheol

I got a Bowling For Soup album, plus a wee bit of mallcore, sadly, I enjoyed it. D:

Is this list bad, or do I just need some education of the Metulz?

I also got some fat strings for tuning that lady down, if I need it. Does the job. I was mainly looking for a fast neck and good playability.
