Thanks for mentioning that album. While I was deciding which CDs to order from Amazon, I ordered Fly By Night since it's Peart's debut and it's been almost a year since I last bought an album of Rush's (I only have 2112 and Moving Pictures right now).

I've got 2112 (it was my first), Spirit of Radio (their greatest hits album), Snakes and Arrows, A Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres. I plan on getting: Permanent Waves, Fly By Night, and Moving Pictures.

True. I know I'm intelligent. Also, statistics show that the students with higher grades mostly like metal. That's why I have reasons to suspect that the Metalhead stereotype is a general media attack to keep people away from metal, that holds ideas unpleasant to the industry, that wants people to like Britney Spears and damn EMO. Luckyly (I'm foreign, so not sure if that's how you spell this word), intelligent people see through the publicity smoke screen and see that the only true genre is metal.

In other words, I think there is a conspiracy. Don't call me crazy, though. I just think that a group of people can "dominate" more fans, and thus gain more money, more easily with pop and EMO. And to ensure that the people won't like metal instead (generally metal fans like only metal, or metal and classic), they push the stereotype, and the weak-minded people will dislike metal.

no problem. its not as proggy as the later albums, but if you find you like it you'll probably enjoy caress of steel too, quite similar style but with some more complex songs.

Hey, that isn't nonsense. >:(

hah ok i take that back. moving pictures etc. are preety good but i still prefer 70's rush.
by the way im exploring black metal again just now. anyone reccomend me some...how can i describe it...weird atmospheric experimental black metal, along the lines of deathspell omega?

On the topic of how a Metaller looks, I think this:

Music in all forms is something that is only relevant to ones ears (and maybe limbs in terms of dancing), not someones clothes.
Anyone who dresses to fit in with their preferred genres style, then they're just a trendy faggot and I don't agree with it.
If you like that style, fine, dressing how you want is the point. But if people only dress that way to fit in, then they deserve to be shot.

On the topic of clothing: It really depends.. I walk around with some jeans and a bandshirt. and I have long hair. Some people dress like they're going to the most cvlt show of the decenium every day.

I want to start making a patch vest, though:p

on languages: I speak dutch and english fluently, and I can help myself in french and german. Of course, I know some words in a lot of languages, but not more than the "thank you's" or "hello's".

Then bands like Marylin Manson, My Chemical Romance and Slipknot come by and it seems most of you are thrown back to the stone age.

"BAWW, THEY SUCK, BASEFF."

The sad truth is, there's always going to be at least 2 people in a group of five metalheads that hate everything that isn't metal.

I just hate everything that is played on stupid popular radio. Ya'know the 'Top 40' kind of nonsense.
Oh and False Metal =P

Anyway moving on to more important things. For some reason I can't seem to get onto Metal-Archives. It just keeps giving me "403 Forbidden. You don't have permission to access / on this server."

Anyone else getting this? Or just me?

I've got a question that's been bothering me or the longest time, I just haven't bothered to post for the past..... however long it's been. But now that I've got nothing better to do at the moment...

What characteristics define metal? What makes metal metal?

Give me technical terms, even if I don't understand them. I want to know, musically, what makes the difference. I don't want answers like "the feel of it all" or shit like that. Is it the particular riffs? Something about the voice? What?

What separates metal from sub-genres like mallcore, metalcore and whatever other shit people come up with?

Seriously, I want to know.

Apologies aren't what I look for. Redemption is what I want!

At 12/28/07 03:08 AM, OVlez wrote: What characteristics define metal? What makes metal metal?

I can define just about everything you want to know about what makes metal metal nowadays, but it would take too much time. See, in today's contemporary world, there's all types of heavy metal, and even those sub-genres have sub-genres under them. Hell, we even have some hybrid genres.

AND even some of those form dualities to create something completely off the charts.
There's just too many things too go into defining metal, that one could possibly write a whole book off it.

Now, if you would've asked that say, 15-20 years ago, it would've been a lot easier:
Heavy riff-age, steady tempo, a much more flamboyant feel compared to it's predecessor, Hard rock.

If Fly By Night is a great album, then I won't be bothered about the less proggyness on the album. Also, maybe it was just me, but I heard lots of negative thoughts about Caress of Steel.

That's true. I listen to metal because I enjoy the music. I don't need to dress like a typical metalhead. As long as I like the music, that's it. I don't need to work hard on making myself look "metal".

At 12/28/07 02:17 AM, Oppugnant wrote: Anyone else getting this? Or just me?
