Martin St. Louis hit a 2-run double in the bottom of the 9th didn't he? And B. J. Upton got the shutout between the pipes to beat the Boston Jazz 1-0

Riiiight up until Zdeno Chara gets impaled by a stick and Tim Thomas breakdances his way down the other end of the ice, accidentally breaking the femurs of Glen Murray and a recently-returned Patrice Bergeron and allowing Marcel Hossa to score the game-winner from behind his own goal, seconds before he's crushed to death by a rolling, breakdancing ball of Boston Bruins. just wait and see.

When is that game going to happen? I am so buying tickets!

Parros damaged it last year, old man Chelios this year.

what's new.

Also thank GOD nabs didn't win the vezina. He wasn't even the best goaltender in his own division, let alone the league.

Nabokov was the best!

uh... no, no he wasn't. He played a lot of games for a team with excellent team defense, that's it. His play wasn't special or spectacular. He faced very few shots a game and put up a poor save percentage.

my top goalies for last season based on #'s and intangibles and shit:\
1. Lundy. crappy defense, poor shut down line, toughest division in hockey.
2. Jigs. He missed a lot of time, so I was surprised he got as many vezina votes as he did. Played w/o Nieds for half a year, schnieder was injured for several games, pronger stomped his way out of 8 games. not to mention pahlsson missed all that time. 2nd best goals against, third best save percentage.
3. Brods. put up his best season to date with the worst defense that's ever been in front of him. played in the toughest division.
4. Bryzgalov. Posted a .921 save percentage playing for the coyotes.
5. Vokoun. Without him the panthers win 8 games.

Not a bad lineup of tenders there. Hopefully next year, Jose can step back up to the sort of Level he had during his good years at Montreal. Maybe we'll have a decent defence in front of him to help as well :P

THE CAMEL.

Mehhh on calgary. Essentially, dealt:
17th pick, Tangs

For:

25th pick, Cammy. (and cam's contract which is 2 mil cheaper than that of tangs)

it's bleh. Holy shit montreal, though. Adding Tanguay to their top six is going to be frightening. Doubly so if they can sign sundin.

Yotes trade:
Ballard
Boynton
Pick

For:
OLLI 'YOU MUST BE' JOKINEN

I sorta like it. Fixes the terrible panther defense (Ballard gives me serious wood) and allows hot prospect Matthias to step into the center hole. Phoenix gets all the more dangerous. Their offense is going to be absolutely disgusting in a few years.

Turris, Mueller, Doan, Hanzal, Doan, Olli, Vrbata(perhaps).

Ducks traded the 12th pick for the 17th and 28th. Flipped the 28th pick for the 35th and 39th.
I'm a fan of the move. The ducks don't need one home run prospect, their needs are more along the line of restocking the pipeline. Especially since second rounder Bryce Swan told them to go f a goat.

Also Emery + Cloutier on waivers, likely to be bought out. Bout time.

explain to me why the isles suck at drafting so much

first of all, the whole trading down thing is arguably not a great move; taking josh bailey was worse since he's considered a checking-line/PK-line kind of guy, and not a pure scorer like Filatov. I dunno why they would pass on Nikita...fucking asdkfjdsf. v_v

also, Chris Mason to the Blues...does that make him the backup, or do you think that they'll actually have a battle for the starter's job with Legace?

Prospal back to TB; maybe he'll stay now that they got Stamkos.

welllll. Isles got those other picks, too. Pretty much everyone in the top 15 is a surefire NHLer anyways.

Also, with mason, he'll be the backup. Sorta. 50/32 split is what the word is. But lord knows as soon as they implement the new goal pad standards legace's value is going to plummet. It'll keep a midget like him from wearing the tallest available pads each game. I mean really, they go up to his tits.

Vinny only got ran out of town because torterella shit on his dick so often. Vinny Propro loves Lecav and Marty St Lou. I just hope they get him on a one year deal, because I've never seen a player rock so hard in contract years.

How about Yan Stastny? Older brother, but worse hockey player.

And while we're on the subject of the Stastny family, how about either Anton or Marian, who also played for the Nordiques? Anton wasn't a bad player, with 636 points in 9 seasons, while Marian was a flop, ending up playing for the Maple Leafs.

Anyone fancy Peter and Paul Stastny as the new Bobby and Brett Hull? They were the first (only?) Father / Son combinations to each score 1,000 Points.

The Leafs place Kyle Wellwood and Andrew Raycroft on waivers today.
If it were me, I would have put Raycroft to the minors. That way, if nobody took him, they wouldn't have to have his salary count towards the cap.

Uh, they're buying him out. You have to place a player on waivers before you're allowed to buy him out. I think they'll owe 1/3 of raycroft's contract over the next two years. tis decent.

Ducks owners got suspended indefinitely by the league. Some other guy will be taking the helm. I don't really understand how this works as far as financing the club is concerned, since the owners (the bankroll) are to have nothing to do with the function of the club. Ah well, hopefully it works itself out.

The Vancouver Canucks claimed forward Kyle Wellwood off waivers on Wednesday in an effort to bolster an offense that struggled to score last season.

Also, the Maple Leafs plan to buy out forward Darcy Tucker. Tucker, a 12-year veteran, has three years left on his contract and will be owed two-thirds of it-or $6 million-paid back over a six-year term by the Leafs. He signed a four-year extension with the team in February 2007, and had 18 goals and 34 points last season.

Well, only 1 of the 2 owners have been suspended. The guy's wife is still active as a Co-Owner. This shouldn't affect the financing of the club and the Ducks announced that it will not affect the day-to-day affairs of the club either.

I've never seen anything like this before :$

He's been one of the bright points on the Leafs over the past feew years. He's not going to be the most productive, but he can certainly stirr the emotions when you need it (and sometimes when you don't).

I wouldn't mind the Isles taking a guy like Tucker over someone like Tim Jackman or Kip Brennan. It doesn't matter though, because with the way we draft and trade I'll be about 28 years old before we contend in the NHL again...hopefully with luck, Kirill Petrov will turn out to be awesome when he makes the jump to the NHL, David Toews will be like Jonathon, and Corey Trivino will be solid too...maybe Bailey will learn from Sillinger. :I

also, the Panthers put Jozef Stumpel on waivers on Wednesday. Stumpel is entering the last season of a two-year contract extension that will pay him $2.25 million. The 35-year-old had seven goals and 20 points in 52 games last season.

Martin Straka, who played for the New York Rangers the last three seasons after joining the NHL in 1992, will be a player and sports director for HC Lasselsberger Plzen, the club said on its Web site Thursday. Straka played for Plzen before moving to the NHL, and during the 2004-05 lockout season.

The Tampa Bay Lightning bought out the final season of goalie Marc Denis' contract Wednesday. Denis, who appeared in 54 games with Tampa Bay, was due to earn $3 million next season. He spent much of last season with the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League, playing in just 10 games for the Lightning.

A third-party source Thursday told The New York Post Jaromir Jagr has recently received a three-year contract offer for the equivalent of $35 million from Omsk of the Russian Super League. The captain is believed to have received the formal offer this week from Omsk GM Anatoly Bardin after months of conversations. Jagr, who will become an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday, has said that his first choice is to sign a new deal with the New York Rangers. But GM Glen Sather told The Post that he has not heard from #68 despite repeatedly telling Jagr's agent Pat Brisson that he wants Jagr to return.

Lightning sign Ryan Malone for seven years and $31.5 million, or roughly $7-8 million per year. Honestly I think that that's pretty high for a player of his caliber, but hey, it's not my money. Then the Lightning acquired exclusive negotiation rights with Brian Rolston by giving the Wild a selection in either the 2009 or 2010 draft depending on whether the Lightning can sign Rolston or not.

Isles let Dubie go to the RSL's AK Kazan; Oilersgot Lubo Visnovsky from the Kings for Jarret Stoll and Matt Greene.

Actually, it's front loaded. 8 million the first year, 7 the second. Pretty clever, actually, because of how the cap works. They'll be paying him 8 mill, but the cap 'hit' work on the average amount of money per term. In this case, 4.5 million. Later on in the deal when he'll only be making 2 million but still 'hitting' them for the 4.5, they can buy him out.

Buy outs work by figuring the amount of money REMAINING in the term. So they'd be able to buy out a 4.5 million dollar hit by only paying him, say, 1.3 over two year, or 650,000 each year for two years.

Still, it's difficult to believe that such a mediocre player is going to make 8 million dollars.

On the heels of signing Prospal, Roberts and Malone today the Lightning have also decided to unveil their new logo that will hit the ice this season. It's a tribute to their illustrious coach, Barry Melrose. The logo was unveiled at a press conference late this evening and, sadly, Barry did not dye his hair blue, white and black to go along with it. We can only hope.

Already, the influence of the logo is being felt throughout the Tampa community. The many encouraging moves made by the team this off-season have sparked interest from their fans and this one is no different. At this hour, fans are fully embracing it by going to NASCAR races, trying out for the television show 'Cops', buying Pabst Blue Ribbon, listening to the song 'Sweet Home Alabama' on repeat, letting their cars rust in their front yard, letting their cars rust in their backyard, going shirtless to work, and giving birth to twenty children prior to the age of fifteen.

FREEEEEEEBIRD WEEEEEEEEEEEEE-EEEEWWW!

anyway, some more moves...

The Oilers traded LW Raffi Torres to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for 21-year-old C Gilbert Brule, and sent D Joni Pitkanen to the Carolina Hurricanes for LW/RW Erik Cole. Torres has two years and $5.15 million remaining on his current contract, while Brule will earn $765,000 next season before he's a restricted free agent. Cole has one year left on his current deal at $4 million.

The Predators traded D Marek Zidlicky to the Wild for prospect Ryan Jones and a second round pick. Zidlicky has two years and $7 million remaining on his current contract. In addition, the Wild signed LW/RW Andrew Brunette to a three-year, $7 million contract.

The Penguins agreed to a three-year deal with forward Pascal Dupuis worth $1.4 million per season.

The Devils and D Bryce Salvador have agreed to terms on a four-year deal worth an average of $2.9 million per season. They also re-signed LW Jay Pandolfo and F David Clarkson, and declined an option on F Sergei Brylin. Pandolfo, an 11-year veteran, had 12 goals and 24 points in 54 games last season. He signed for three years and $7.5 million.

The Sabres re-signed F Paul Gaustad to a four-year, $9.2 million contract. Gaustad will earn $1.7 million in the first year of the deal, and $2.5 million per year for the remaining three years.

The Capitals signed G Jose Theodore to a two-year contract. Theodore, 31, became an unrestricted free agent on July 1 after playing out a three-year, $16 million contract. As well, the Capitals agreed to terms with restricted free agent D Mike Green on a four year deal with an average annual salary of $5.25 million. The Avalanche replaced Theodore by signing G Andrew Raycroft to a one-year deal worth an undisclosed sum. More recently, the Avalanche solidified their blueline by re-signing JM Liles and Adam Foote to contracts. The Maple Leafs replaced the recently-waived Raycroft by signing G Curtis Joseph to a one-year, $700,000 deal to back up Vesa Toskala. The Leafs also signed D Jeff Finger from the Avalanche to a 4-year deal worth $3.5 million a season.

The Lightning signed F Radim Vrbata to a $9-million, three-year contract Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Coyotes signed D Kurt Sauer to a four-year contract worth $1.75 million a season. They continued signing bruisers by adding F Todd Fedoruk for 3 years.

The Red Wings signed D Brad Stuart to a four-year contract that averages $3.75 million per season. The deal also included a no-trade clause in the first two season and a limited no-trade clause in the last two years of the contract. After that, the Wings signed G Ty Conklin to a 1-year deal worth $750,000.

The Canadiens re-signed F Andrei Kostitsyn to a 3-year deal worth $3.25 million a season.

& apparently the Canucks are offering $20 million for two years to Mats Sundin.

I think of all these signings, the Brunette one was the best value, provided he can replicate his production from the previous seasons with Colorado. The Brule trade could work out great for the Oilers if Brule can start to mature. I think the Gaustad signing was a bit of a reach, and the re-signing of Kosti by the Habs could go either way depending on his next two seasons (perhaps a soph slump and then another great year, perhaps vice-versa, who knows). Overall I still think the Malone signing could be this year's version of the Penner signing, but being that it's only Day 1 of signings, I wouldn't be shocked to see Kevin Lowe make another stupid move to one-up the Lightning. The Jeff Finger signing was pretty goddamn bad too.
