Reviews for "Year of the Snake"

Ooooh!

Well, this is an odd situation. Let me put this plainly: this game is BEAUTIFUL. The graphics are superb, I can't put it any more simply than that. And damn, is it stylish! The streaks the sword leaves behind, the fluid animations, the dynamic camera, the nice backgrounds (escpecially when you get to the burning town), the well-drawn enemies and the variety they pose...damn, is this one-well drawn game. Alot of games out there are fun to play, but look pretty shitty. This game is actually the opposite, it looks BRILLIANT, but...its just not that fun.

Here's what this flash needs in order to get First Page. This isn't saying "here's what this flash needs, and then it might get First Page." No, you do this, and First Page is guarenteed. First, fix the sound! The sound isn't bad, per se, but it just isn't nice to listen to, and its hardly dynamic at all. I liked the nature sounds when they were in the main menu; but when you start playing the game, you NEED some music. Nature just made it...boring. Aside from background music, the sound effects are pretty bad too. I mean, for a sword that looks that cool in action, it sure as hell doesn't sound cool. I'm not sure what to tell you specifically for this category, but...make it sound like a SWORD, not a BATON.

The second thing is, give us some variety! There's not even a second attack button! That would be fine, if we could get different weapons, or upgrade the sword, or something; but its literally the same damn combo over and over and over again. And no matter how cool that combo looks, it eventually get old. The game is really just me running around hitting the same button over and over again for the same effects. We need something more to satisfy us!

Ultimately, this is a GREAT game visually and stylistically. But the fun factor and sound need a significant boost before it moves up in my eyes. Oh, and I just noticed; this is your first submission? DAMN. I have my eye on you, my talented little friend.

Void24 responds:

Thank you (and all reviews for that matter) for the insight. I really wanted to set up a more dynamic fighting system, but as my deadline for the contest loomed over me, I had to cut features :(. I also understand that the sound could use work. I recorded all the FX myself, and have no experience in that field. Im glad you liked what you did, and thanks for taking the time to write out a review.

pretty basic, but still not bad

i liked how the camera sorta shifted as u moved, giving it a dynamic feel, and the graphics were pretty well done, but still too basic to be worth much consideration. i also liked how the character had a whole combo rather than just rapidly slashing like most poor flash games. this is sorta an "all flash, no substance" situation, but still pretty good.

Not the worst

Okay, I am a fair reveiwer and I give just about anything a shot. And here is yours;

Graphics: The graphics were good, the enemies looked good and the sceens weren't too bad. How ever, when your char would move, the whole ground would tilt making me a bit disoriented.

Style: You went with a nice style and it wasn't that bad, but it has been done far to many time before. Ancient sword weilding guy fights monsters. Been-there Done-that.

Sound:The sound of the fire was good and the swings of the sword weren't bad, but that was it. You hardly heard anything else.
Violence:Not bad but, and some people would agree with me on this one, there could have been more. Usually in a game like this, if you got hit by a big sword you would be bleeding. Just my opinion.

Interactivity:Now, I rate interactivity by what you can do in the game. There wasn't much you could do. You could swing that bitty sword and you could jump. That's about it. You limited the game to the bare minimum. you should try branching out and making things you could throw or something along those lines.

Humor: Well, your game was more on the serious side, so it is quite obvious why I didn't give it a high mark on humor. Had in not been for those big fellows that spit fire, I would have givin it a 0.

That is my review on Year of the Snake. I give it a 2/5. If you add ina few more things and even add in a a tiny bit of blood and some more sound, it could be quite a bit better. Thanks for reading

Void24 responds:

Thanks for your thoughts.

The ground tilt seems to be getting mixed responses. Some really like it, while others feel it is disorienting. Perhaps I will have an option in future games to turn it off.

Definately not a new idea, but I like Ancient sword wielding guys.

I went with whimsical puffy smokey sword hits, and perhaps they were too subtle. Sorry to those who prefer blood.

Heh, I'm glad the big fellows got me a point of humor.

It was ok

The only problem is the lack of moves, if it had another hit button and some combo's it would be a better game, and it could be a lot longer. Not bad for a first game!

Well above average

Hmm be better if there were some some way to pause the game, or attribute bonuses, overall I did like the gameplay and general fighting style of the game, so it deserves at least a 7
