Well, it's Taker at his most classic; if you DON'T like it, I'll be surprised. :P
Ok, here's my thoughts on that, and why SD! was a real mixed bag for me last night:
1. The booking on this angle and then sketch didn't work for me: So Teddy screwed the Undertaker all by himself? Why? Because he has a family to feed...um...ok? That doesn't actually explain anything. Is CM Punk drawing higher ratings? Is Undertaker somehow unworthy to be champion? The problem here is that he didn't really explain anything. This is something you do to turn an authority figure heel, WWE should freakin well know this because they are the company that perpetrated Montreal and exploited it to their advantage. It's amazing to me this is the same company. They dropped that ball so bad.
2. Fun with the post production truck: This concept was great and harkened back to the old style Attitude era angles where the wrestler waits and gets his vengeance, particularly Taker. The problem for me was the smoke, the lightning, and all the other stuff that takes me out of the moment. When it happens in an arena I can still feel there's an element of reality to it, but when it's so obviously dubbed over a taped segment it just tends to look hokie. I think they should have just gone with Teddy banging on the doors trying to get out, maybe poured in the smoke, but stopped at the smoke. The lights and the lightning was just too damn much.
3. Placement: Um, memo to WWE, this was put in the WRONG DAMN SPOT ON THE SHOW!! Like seriously it was so glaring I had to wonder if somebody fucked with the tape and they somehow ran it out of order. This is your ending. I thought it was especially asining to send Punk out to cut a promo after Teddy Long admitted everything was a conspiracy and Punk acted like he won fair and square. I guess they thought it made Punk look more like a hypocrite and a phony, and true, it does. But it could also be taken as "wow, Punk is a real idiot because he doesn't pay attention to anything else on this show. This should have been you're big tense moment. With Teddy in the office worried about what Taker might do to him, jumping at every noise, looking around every corner. THEN he can be forced out by Vince and made to explain, and THEN Taker kidnap him. Again, to me this reminded me of the angle where Taker kidnapped Stephanie back in the Ministry days, and that angle was quite effective, in large part because it was THE LAST THING ON THE SHOW!!! The audience was left going "holy hell, he got her, what happens next week?!". Same thing could have been done here, I don't think we needed to close with Batista over Jericho.
So I think it was a strong concept, but WWE's execution was pretty piss poor and I can't help but look at this as wasted opportunity. I know the spooky is a big part of Taker, I love the spooky with this character, it's a big reason he first caught my attention and why I followed him...but sometimes WWE pushes it into too unrealistic terms and this was definitely one of those times. So hopefully they recover next week, but they really didn't do a good job of washing the bad from Breaking Point away for me. Hopefully they come back strong next week on that score.
Otherwise I thought you got a pretty good show. Morrison over Knox was pretty good for what it was, the abscence of Khali has been explained and hopefully it'll lead to a better feud for Kane (he deserves it) and I liked that The Hart Dynasty picked up a win, they need some more though because you can't just keep telling people how good a young team they are but keep having them lose. I mean that's like saying "well hey this team has a lot of great potential" but they can't win games. You know what people think of that team? That their LOSERS and not worth their time.
Anyone else catch JR tripping on Kanye West? You just know he was fed that line and I think he was publicly bitching out whoever fed that into the headset to him as he got admonished. Kind of surprised they didn't edit that bit out.
