Report Card for ECW on Sci-fi 9/19
Little format change this week, usually I break this down segment by segment, but since we had the Booker T segments run throughout the show, and they are largely interconnected and they'll all get the same grade for me, I'll do them all in one section towards the end. Also, I'll be posting the results of who beat who instead of just laying out who fought who, this way it becomes a bit more clear So with that said, let's go to the tale of the tape:
Six Man Tag match: Sau, Tommy Dreamer, and The Sandman over Mike Knox, Test, and Matt Stryker via disqualification: What a fun, fun match to kick off the show with. One thing you can say about the brand thus far is that they always give you at least one really good bout, and these three ECW originals always deliver. Test has really been working hard to improve, and did a good job carrying his end of things, Knox looked better this week, but that may just be because of how little he had to do. Stryker knocking out Sandman was a perfect spot, and this is a good way to build the feud, as the crowd will be frothing to see Sandman finally kill Stryker. The finish wasn't really a problem for me since the idea of this match was to make everyone look good. Grade: A
Kevin Thorne w/Ariel over Balls Mahoney w/Francine via pinfall: WELCOME BACK WELCOME BACK!!! I cannot tell you how indescribably awesome it felt to see the Queen of Extreme back last night. It was a perfect use of her, and after all the sick bumps and crpa she took in the old ECW, she absolutely positively deserves a spot within the new company. Also great to see her "catfight" with Ariel, as it creates that great "feud within a feud" aspect. Thorne and Balls had a good match while it lasted, and I think Thorne is really continuing to improve, and I dig the character as I'm a big fan of vampires in general, Balls continues to be an underrated worker who is really showing his stuff when you put him in the ring. Not quite up to the level of it's prior match, but in no way subpar or boring either. Grade: B+
CM Punk over Shannon Moore via submission: This was another squash for Punk, but I liked that they had Kelly out on the ramp there as they continue to plant the seeds for a Punk vs. Knox feud. I'm wondering if Moore isn't ultimately going to be turned into a CM Punk follower, as it just dosen't seem like they have a lot planned for him, even after all those vignettes. Grade: B
Rene Dupree promo: Nothing new here, just WWE wanting us to remember Dupree, and that he's supposedly "extreme", felt like they could have just left Dupree off this week, and given those two minutes to something I found more interesting. Grade: D
Booker T segments: Top to bottom? I absolutely loved this. I hope Vince was taking notes, because this is exactly what a story like this should do, they made Booker look important, and it gave all the ECW players a chance to cut some promos and stand up to the champ. His reaction to Balls was priceless, and CM Punk looked like a top tier guy in standing up to him. They also managed to quickly show us that hey, Trinity is back! Hopefully now my favorite pizans the FBI will get some TV time. I kind of figured they were holding off on pushing them till she got back. Also, it was great that Paul Heyman was then trying to make the sales pitch to Book about coming to ECW before RVD interrupted. It's absolutely the right idea that if an on air authority figure gets a guy from another brand to come to his show that he should absolutely be trying to recruit that person, especially someone like King Booker who is a world champion. Grade: A +
King Booker w/Queen Sharmell over RVD via pinfall: Book and RVD had a solid competitive bout, which is absolutely what I expected. Van Dam got in all his signature stuff, and proved that he really works best under conditions where he can freely incorporate plunder into his move set, Book is always good in the ring. The Holly finish was predictable, but absolutely the right call, the champ is not going to do a job he can't get back (nor should he) and Holly and Van Dam still have an issue to push. My only complaint was that with Holly taking so long about nailing the Alabama Slam, he looked sort of dopey in dropping RVD so close to a chair without actually landing him on it, wouldn't he want maximum damage on his hated enemy? Oh well, can't neccessarily bitch about them trying to work safe, unless you really don't care about the workers that is. Grade: A
Overall: The show was a vast improvement from last week's "spinnin our wheels" edition, the storylines are in a holding pattern right now, and the builds are very long, but without PPV to build to, that's just the nature of the beast. I agree with Dave Scherer that while that's not a big problem yet, ECW still needs at least 4 quarterly PPV's, as well as a good prescence on the co-brand shows so that they can actually have beginnings, middles, and ends for their feuds. Because right now they're doing a pretty bad job at letting us know when they're stories are ending, but with Survivor Series coming up, and then the December to Dismember after that, that's a problem that should clear up in the next couple of months. A very good show this week, I give it an overall A-
