ECW On Sci Fi report card for 9/5
ECW on Sci-Fi was a solid show this week, despite the fact that they're main event program is now going to stall for this week and next as Big Show is involved in the top RAW angle, which hopefully will be over after Unforgiven. There was also the absolutely tasteless comment made by Matt Striker about the death of Steve Irwin on Monday, which I'll delve into a bit more as we get to that segment.
Let's grade it:
Rob Van Dam and Sabu vs. Knox and Test: This was good compensation for RVD and Sabu having their usual programs on hold for the week, and it was great to see the former ECW tag champions in action. I found it odd that they're twice winning the tag titles was not mentioned by Joey at all, I hate the selective memory WWE uses for these sorts of things. Knox looked like he was in super slow motion with most of his offense, and test wasn't much better, RVD and Sabu carried this one all the way, and hit some pretty awesome spots, and the finish was a nice bit of nostalgia that made this old school ECW mark pop. Grade: A- (points off for the crappy offense by Knox and Test)
Kevin Thorne and Ariel segment: Meh, this did nothing for me, and I think since they came out practically right after this to observe the Balls Mahoney match, we really didn't need to watch them making out for a few minutes. Grade: F (for being pointless)
Matt Striker's Classroom: Matt Striker is a really good talker, and the more I watch him, the more I don't mind the teacher gimmick so much. The man is entertaining on the microphone. With that said though, there is absolutely no excuse for him to be making a tasteless comment about the death of Steve Irwin. Whether you think Irwin's lifestyle choices were stupid or not, it does not change the fact that he was a human being, and a husband and a father. To insult the dead, especially a day after the incident happens, is totally claseless, and I absolutely believe Mcmahon told Striker to go out there and say that. Shame on him. I like that The Sandman is being used as Striker's opposition here, he's the perfect candidate to be Striker's first ECW opponent. I just wish they had been more clear in blowing off the tag feud he was involved in before this. Grade: B- (The points off are completely for the Steve Irwin insult, which was absolutely tasteless, Striker can generate heat without doing stupid shit like that, and if he can't? Then he should find a new job).
Balls Mahoney vs. Stevie Richards: Ariel is dirty hot, I'm going to say that every week...oh the things I'd do to her...um, excuse me...back to grading. Balls and Stevie had a solid little match, and I like that Balls and Thorne are establishing a feud. Stevie getting the win off of Thorne's interference is an angle we've seen many many times, but it's one of those age old tricks that's always good to get a feud going. Good to see more feuds developing. Grade: A (good work, and the development of a new feud, in a well executed package make this a segment I have a hard time finding fault with).
Shannon Moore promo: I have to think TNA management were probably grumbling just a little to hear Moore refer to himself as the "Prince of Punk". It was all set to be a nothing new from Shannon Moore type of segment, but then CM Punk came in to call him a poser and slap the taste out of his mouth. I think we've all wanted to do that for weeks, Moore and Punk should theoretically put out some good matches. Grade: C+(CM and the feud building here completely save this segment from getting it's usual D or F grading from me).
Big Show vs. DX: Personally? I didn't really care about this match, nor do I care about this feud, I can't even fake caring anymore. It's gone too long, and now I can't even watch ECW without escaping it. The match itself was "ok" but I wasn't really moved by anything I saw in it, Michaels did a great plancha, H fucking up his his Hulk Hogan moment was unintentional funny, but beyond that? Nothing much here that had me feeling much at all. This was all about selling Unforgiven, maybe they did that for interested fans, but I just do not care for the Mcmahons and their feuds anymore. Grade: C- (the work was ok, but the match and the story going into it do nothing for me, and therefore it felt like the Batista/Show main event from Hammerstein all over again).
Overall thoughts and grade: Like I said, we had a solid episode this week, the opener was the best match of the night, and proof of why Sabu and RVD are two guys to build the brand around. It wasn't a home run, but it was a fun show that I was largely entertained by, with only minor flaws that hampered my enjoyment. So I'm going to give the overall broadcast a solid B +
