I don't think ECW ever honestly competed with anybody, I think they hated WCW, but with WWE, it was just about having that edge, it was about being rebellious and different, and that's what they needed to do, that's what the industry needed then. For Shane Douglas to win the NWA title, and raffle off all the great names who held it, then to say "and they can all...kiss my ASS!" was HUGE, I mean, maybe people don't get that now, because we've been getting trained that titles aren't important, but back then, that was huge. I do think they are starting to move back into (at least on RAW) the idea that everybody should want to be the world/wwe champion, that the world/wwe champion is the top guy, and if you don't want to be the top guy, then there's something wrong with you. I too agree that most fans today don't have the patience to have long champions anymore, but again, we had to be programmed not to accept it, and we can probably always be reprogrammed into accepting it again as well. I also agree with people who say we could have a world title switch on television, I think on a month where you don't have PPV, it would be a good way to get people to feel like "hey, I have to watch more then just the PPV's now, because good god, they had a title change on tv, so anything can happen!"
WWE needs somebody nipping at them for no other reason then it's a way to keep Vince from indulging in a lot of the stupider stuff he does. I honestly think Vince believes that he is not competing with anything for his viewers attention and money, that he can just trot out whatever crap he wants (Katie Vick) and people are going to watch it because, hey, what else are they going to do? Well I'm here to tell him what we'll do, and what I myself have been doing a lot lately: We'll change the channel, we won't record the show, you don't make it seem like destination television to me? FINE! I won't treat it as such. If Vince had someone out there he considered a competitor, it might not make him change his product, but it would certainly make him think before he put some of the tasteless crap he's put on television out there. I honestly believe that even when WCW was taking, they were still useful, if only in that it made Vince hold back on some of the more tasteless tv, simply because if people hated it, they could change the channel to WCW and give ratings and support to the opposition.
