Star Ocean is turning out to be quite a wild ride, there are quite a few suprises, very nice.

So how are you guys doing?

What one, for what platform? You probably said it somewhere above, but whatever.

Doing pretty good. Loving Dawn of the New World, every minute of it. Except for one part where there was a questionable lighting choice that made stretches of the game almost impossible to play. But other than that, it's great.

No, not the Temple of Darkness.

So here's my impression of Fallout 3. I played it on a friend's computer and all it took was five minutes to get sucked in. I just couldn't stop. The character building part is fucking awesome. The main quest is as sweeping as the previous two ones. And the kept everything that was great about the series.

On the other hand, this game is so much more than the previous two titles. For example, you need more than your stats to pick locks. there's a minigame for it. Also this game makes a much better use of your non-combat skills. Bullshiting your way through quests is sometimes easier than fighting through them. The Science and Speech skills are highly useful.

All in all, I haven't seen that much of the game, which is regretful. I probably won't get close to beating it till my tour of duty is over with. Still, if I'm actualy considering buying a laptop (with my nearly non-existant salary) just to play it, you should all give it a try.

If words were wisdom, I'd be talking even more.

Star Ocean: First Departure for the PSP.
It's a remake from the original one.

Oh well. Don't have PSP, and don't plan on getting one. I remember playing a Star Ocean game for the PS2, but I don't recall which one.

It's amazing. It hasn't disapointed me at all. In fact, I may be enjoying it more than the first one.

Blasphemy that that is.

Yeah, everybody says that F3 is totally awesome..but some people confront it with Oblivion..sigh..these people are n00bs.
Why?
1.Oblivion was released 2 (or 3) years ago, so Fallout has better visuals and sound effects
2.It is a TOTALLY different theme (post-apocalyptic/medieval)
3.Different gameplay (pure RPG/shooter-RPG)
4.Oblivion is based on character and skill building but Fallout is based on shooting stuff (don't get me wrong-there is a lot of character building in that game too-but it's still a shooter-RPG hybrid)
5.For fuck's sake, Fallout 3 IS NOT OBLIVION WITH GUNS!

I recall a classmate buying the premium/special boxset, it looks nifty and has some cool extras thrown in, like a 250 page book, a figurine, a clock and something else.

Having read up about it, it does look good, might ask him if I can try it.

Yeah he starts out like a wimp of epic measures, but even even in the beginning of the game, he grows some balls. And he is very respectable later on in the game, and Ratatosk mode is always a joy to watch, in and out of battle.

No.
Both of Emil's voices are done by on infamous Jonny Yong Bosch. he has done:
Ichigo- Bleach
Renton- Eureka 7
Lelouch- Code Geass
Guy- Tales of the Abyss
Nero- Devil May Cry 4
Vash- Trigun
He's done others, but those are some of the most notable.
Light Yagami is voiced by one Brad Swaile.
Brad voiced in several animes, none of them notable in my opinion (save for Death Note, his greatest performance).

If not, I know I've heard that voice before. This also happened with the first game, where it took me a while to figure out Lloyd was actually Robin.

Don't you just hate when noob assholes run around comparing games like that.
Those are the kind of fanboys that we used to beat up in the 90s.

Now for a mini review of DoNW to wrap up this megapost.

Pros:
Game starts out well.
Motion Capture cut scenes.
Better voice acting than Symphonia, abeit slight.
More voice acting than Symphonia.
Voiced Skits.
Zelos returns.
Kratos doesn't. (kidding, but seriously)
Great battle system.
Monster capturing dealy is fun.
New dungeons instead of just revisiting old ones.
Raining Fangs owns Yuri(especially with sky attack), don't care what anyone says.
Synch is okay.
Credits doesn't take 3 hours to pass by like Symphonia.
Katz Guild isn't completely incompetent and useless.
Wonder Chef, enough said.
Regal without cuffs.
No painfully expensive like Symphonia.
You can teach monsters spells.
Cinematic Mystic Artes.
Able to double all damage after game completion.
Emil gets ass in good ending.

Cons:
Some motion capture cut scenes can'e be paused with the home button, so you have to sit through them and pause it during the fight when you got to take a hard piss.
New voices for the original cast are a bit lackluster.
Emil's Mystic arte can miss completely, including the extension.
Short game.
No clothes changing titles.
No weapon change outside of battle.
No wide cast of new characters to use, just Emil and Marta...
Cooking is exclusive to monsters.
Certain Synthesis items are hard as hell to come by.
No free world map navigation.
Can't save bad ending, so I had to sit through all those cut scenes again.
15 minute opening scene.
Washboard Marta.
Unison Attack was better in Symphonia.

Conclusion:
Perhaps the best escort title of the Tales series.
Could have used an extra two or three months.

I worded that a bit poorly. Emil's a nice kid, and completly understandably timid due to his "upbringing". And yes, I love Ratatosk. Any scene he is in is epic.

I may be having more fun with it than I had with the first one. The bosses are a little too easy for my taste,

Yeah, they were still really easy until I came across Decus and Alice in the Ginnungagap.

Otherwise known as Robin...? From Teen Titans way back when?

I'll have a review when I beat it.
I may post a review soon or so.

Review coming shortly, people.

Now for a mini review of DoNW to wrap up this megapost.

Pros:
Game starts out well.

Agreed.

Motion Capture cut scenes.

Hells yeah.

Better voice acting than Symphonia, abeit slight.

YEah, slightly. Have you ever noticed pronunciation differences between the games, knux? I swear they're pronouncing "Palmacosta", and "Rheiard", and other reoccuring themes differently.

More voice acting than Symphonia.

Ya.

Voiced Skits.

Thank God.

Zelos returns.

What would we do without him?

Kratos doesn't. (kidding, but seriously)

A tear for those lost. Thank God for at least the cameo.

Great battle system.

Seconded.

Monster capturing dealy is fun.

Fun, but a little unintuitive, in my opinion. I find it to hard to match up the elements, if you're trying to capture a specific monster.

New dungeons instead of just revisiting old ones.

And the old ones are shorter, too. Yay for that.

Raining Fangs owns Yuri(especially with sky attack), don't care what anyone says.

I don't disagree.

Synch is okay.

Yaya.

Credits doesn't take 3 hours to pass by like Symphonia.

Wouldn't know.

Katz Guild isn't completely incompetent and useless.

Hallejujah for that.

Wonder Chef, enough said.

He's alright.

Regal without cuffs.

Regal in a suit.

No painfully expensive like Symphonia.

...by $10.

You can teach monsters spells.

Thank the Lord.

Cinematic Mystic Artes.

Mmhmm.

Able to double all damage after game completion.

Really? Wow.

Emil gets ass in good ending.

Still haven't beat it. But yeah, hopefully.

Cons:
Some motion capture cut scenes can'e be paused with the home button, so you have to sit through them and pause it during the fight when you got to take a hard piss.

True. Especially when they occur before a boss you fucked up on. Annoying.

New voices for the original cast are a bit lackluster.

Intense dislike for Lloyd.

Emil's Mystic arte can miss completely, including the extension.

Wouldn't know, never used it.

Short game.

True.

No clothes changing titles.

?

No weapon change outside of battle.

Ah, yeah. Minor thing, but would have went a long way.

No wide cast of new characters to use, just Emil and Marta...

I like that though. Keeps things simple, and allows for greater focus on Emil and Marta's relationship.

Cooking is exclusive to monsters.

So? Is it all that painful to go hungry?

Certain Synthesis items are hard as hell to come by.

Never bothered with Synthesis.

No free world map navigation.

True, and the game length is shortened because of it.

Can't save bad ending, so I had to sit through all those cut scenes again.

Wouldn't know.

15 minute opening scene.

I wasn't bothered by it.

Washboard Marta.

.....true....but....at least she's cute....
And at least we still have Jubbilies.

Unison Attack was better in Symphonia.

I suppose.

Conclusion:
Perhaps the best escort title of the Tales series.

Nix the perhaps.

Could have used an extra two or three months.

It never hurts.

The glyph system for weapons is a great new system from previous Castlevania games, and going to places other than the castle is a breath of fresh air.
I know Castlevania doesn't count as an RPG, but I just felt that I should put that out there.

Also, downloaded Secret of Mana for the Virtual Console! It is so much fun, especially when you have friends to help you. I've gotten pretty far, and I'm surprised that its a 3-player game. You don't see that everyday. O_O

Alright, got the (better than bad) good ending, so what does that mean? ~Review Time!~
Giving a score in several areas, just like my Unleashed review.
~~~
STORY: The story in DotNW doesn't stray far from your generic "save the world" thing. I don't really fault it for that, because it's everything's been tried before. It spins a beleiveable yarn about the climate, monsters, and over status of the world being in complete disarray. This is due to the uniting of the two worlds, and the actions of two characters I won't mention. But Ratatosk and 6 of his 8 Centurions are asleep, and their powers aren't being held in check. This creates the erratic climate and the aggressive monsters. The bigotry of the Tethe'allans doesn't help much, either. This is a world in despiration, and people are taking drastic action. This allows for the beleiveable motives of the Blood Purge of Palmacosta, and other genocidal attacks during the story. It's all very bloody, and overall pretty good. The story does get fairly convoluted in some areas, and it will take you some time to figure out what's going on. But, these moments are few and far between. But, overall, the story stands on it's own legs, but Symphonia's was better. (8/10)
~~~
COMBAT: The combat in DotNW is incredibly good. It flows together nicely, and there is a fairly strong array of artes to choose from. The Unison attacks weren't as good as in Symphonia, but still serve a strategic purpose. When you initiate the Unison attack, all casting in process is nullified. So, if you can't reach a boss about to pull off a devastating spell, a Unison attack will be incredibly helpful. But let's be honest, there wasn't much broken in Symphonia for DotNW to fix. There are minor improvements everywhere, and only one or two minor drawbacks. Truly the defining aspect of this game, all things considered. (9.5/10)
~~~
VOICE ACTING: It's nice to have a Wii game almost fully voice acted. It really is. But, there are a few annoyances with the performances. First off, a good chunk of original voice actors don't return, and vets, it will take a while to get used to. And there are pronunciation issues with some words (Palmacosta and Rheiard, for example), but overall, it was a decent job. The words didn't flow right at some times, and that did make a minor difference. And something must be said for Ratatosk. He is incredibly well voice acted in this game, and any scene he is in is only made better by hearing his feirce tone. But, everything else is decent. (7/10)
SKITS: I absolutely loved the skits in this game. Fully voice acted, and all the greater for it. These skits exude personality, and there are a few incredibly funny ones. Others serve no purpose whatsoever, but there are far more gems than duds. And a lot of them add to the story, amplifying a certain aspect of them. Wonderfully done, and it would be a shame to skip them. (9/10)
~~~
MONSTER CAPTURE: This system is intruiging. It is a godsend when your party only consists of Marta and Emil, or just Emil. Monsters are incredibly helpful in combat, and can learn valuable healing spells. But, the process of capturing monsters is a bit of an ordeal. You have to get a certain amount of one type of element in the Elemental Grid, and that can be hard. If you're looking to capture a certain monster, you'll have to work pretty hard to get the elements to line up. I actually ignored it after the first few hours of the game. Glad it's there, but when you get to using it is where you can run into problems. (6/10)
~~~
CHARACTER MODELS: They look better this time around, that's for sure. They don't look that great compared to other games, but what it is is an art form. They're not supposed to look hyper-realistic, they are supposed to look like anime characters. It's an art style I support, and it works for this game. (8/10)
~~~
ENVIRONMENTS: They look decent. The majority of dungeons look exactly the same as in Symphonia, just with a few minor touch-ups. It's a shame too, because they could have made the dungeons look fantastic. But, the towns look much better, with a lot more detail. But, since you'll be spending more in dungeons... (6/10)
~~~
CHARACTERS: There are really 5 new characters that are worth mentioning. Emil, Marta, Richter, Alice, and Decus. These people have beleivable personalities, for what little backstory is provided. Emil is primarily the focus of any backstories, and they help you get why he's such a wimp. When you see what he has to deal with on a daily basis, his personality is much more beleiveable and acceptable. Marta is given some backstory, but it and her are pretty flat (innuendo not intended) all things considered. She's head over heels in love with Emil, and that's alright. It does set up some great endings, I'll tell you what. Richter is a character you'll have to play the entire game to understand, and you won't get any of his motives until you get to the end. Decus and Alice are both big villians. One's a sadist, and the other is completely devoted to Alice. That's all the motivation they have really. Plus another one that comes up late in the game, but I'll stay hush-hush.
(7/10)
OVERALL: I'm probably missing something somewhere, but whatever. This game is great, and the best RPG on the Wii, in my opinion. It's story serves it's purpose, has many of the winning elements of Symphonia, and so forth. The voice acting is nice but executed a little underwhelmingly, the characters look good for their art form, and the environments could have used a little work. But, it has fantastic cutscenes, and a small, simple cast of new characters. The small amount of new characters allows for a greater understanding of each one in the end. The greates fault in the entire game, to me, is its lentgh. I completed the entire game in under 26 hours, and it left me wanting more. However, the endings to the game were fantastic. Sad, emotional, and they clear up a lot of questions and tell you what is going to happen to the world in the future. Everything you really want in an ending. Oh yeah, I remember what I forgot. The bosses. The bosses in this game, for the first 20 hours, are pretty easy. There are a few that will challenge you, until the game taunts you with a crazy stream of hard boss fights. It sets an uneven pace, but not so much that it isn't enjoyable. On the contrary, it actually gives you a greater sense of enjoyment, that you are finally being challenged. That and they look impressive too. So, for the bosses, DotNW gets a (8/10).
And that brings me to my overall score. It was a very enjoyable game, almost as much as the first one. If only it was a little longer. But, here it is:
Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World (8.9/10)
Oh so very close to being absolutely fantastic. A few nibbling annoyances kept it just incredibly great. So, Should YOU buy it? Yes, absolutely. For $40 only, it is an absolute bargain. IT will kepp you entertained, and you will love almost every moment you spend with it.
I wanted to give it a 9, I really did. So close.
That pretty much summed it up. I still haven't finished it yet... always get caught up doing some thing else.
I'm at the part where Lloyd joins your team. How much further to the end of the game from there?
Just wondering how much time I need to finish.
Ugh... I can't quite remember where that is. I do know you are relatively close to the end, but if you could give me a location, I can give you a more accurate estimation.
Oh yeah, I think you're pretty close. I was stuck in the Ginnungagap for a while, so I can't be sure, but I think you only have maybe 3 hours at the most left. Most likely less.
Calling to all of you Star Ocean players.
Is there more than one ending in Star Ocean: First Departure?
Because the ending I got seemed somewhat unfinished and not too good.
Ah well. I'm trying to be as vague as I can, but then again, I'm not a vague person.
As evidenced by the above.
