Well, to be honest I've never really been into anime. It was only recently that my opinion on it changed. Film4 were showing anime films in the afternoon a while back and I ended up watching one and enjoying it. Prior to that I just assumed anime was sort of childish. How wrong was I.

Aside from maybe 5-10 films that I can't even name and the first 13 episodes of FMA: Brotherhood, I still haven't watched much anime.

I'll definitely get to Cowboy Bebop eventually though. I just don't know how well I could watch two series at the same time. I prefer to watch one all the way through before starting on something else. Maybe I should have picked something a little shorter than FMA.

Film4 often show a lot of anime, generally just the studio ghibli films (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, The Cat Returns, Kiki's Delivery Service, etc) but I think they've occasionally done some other bits and bobs too.

If you want some suggestions gimme a list of genres, themes, ideas, whatever, and I'll try to come up with some short (13 ep) series for you to watch bro.

Have fun, and welcome to the dark side!

My knowledge of anime is next to null, so I don't really know what sort of genres exist. It would be cool to get a small mixture of series that are worth me looking into, so that I can decided what sort of thing is for me. I'm not really fussy what sort of recommendations I get, it will expand my knowledge regardless.

Right now I've just been having a look at what they all have links to on AnimeRatio.com They seem to have a fair bit of stuff, including movies. It's all English dubbed from what I can tell too, which is kinda nice because I do find that reading subs to be too much at times. Means I literally can't take my eyes off the screen without missing something.

I might watch an episode or two of Tokko at some point, just to see whether or not buying that DVD set would have been a good decision. I think the reviews it had on Amazon were kinda mixed.

You can do a lot better than Tokko, that's for sure, but you could do worse, too.

But really, before you watch anything else, watch Cowboy Bebop or the Ghibli movies. Always a good start. They're considered entry-level anime, but at the same time they're about all(mostly) masterpieces.

Yea, Cowboy Bebop is the next thing on my list for sure. I'm almost at the end of the first season of FMA Brotherhood, but I've been enjoying it so I'll probably still try to finish of season two before moving onto Cowboy Bebop. I think there's even an FMA movie listed on the site I've been using. Probably give that a watch too.

I still haven't watched that from beginning to end, but it's very cool from what I've seen.

Same genres as other mediums. Action, sci-fi, drama, thriller, romance, etc.

Anyway, here are some ballpark entry level stuff (all <26 eps):

Cowboy Bebop: Sci-Fi, Action
Baccano: Period (1920s) Action
Code Geass: Mecha, action
Gurren Lagann: Mecha, action, comedy
Azumanga Daioh: Slice of Life, school comedy
K-On: Slice of life, school comedy
Steins;Gate: Sci-fi, comedy, thriller
Planetes: Sci-fi, drama
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Mecha, Psychological drama
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: School comedy / sci-fi
FLCL: comedy, action

And one longer one (I think about 40 eps?) that's worth checking out
Death Note: Psychological thriller

And some assorted films: Perfect Blue (really cannot recommend this enough, psychological thriller), 5 centimetres per second (drama), Summer Wars (action comedy), Redline (action, sex on wheels), and all of the ghibli films.

That's not an exhaustive list, nor is it a list I demand you follow, it's just a few of the anime I think a newbie would appreciate.
If you need some tips on where to watch stuff, send me a PM.

Well, I'm guessing you'd like more action sci fi/fantasy, if you like FMA. How about Darker Than Black and Baccano?

I'll be sure to try and look into as many of them as I can. It will be nice to get a bit of variation and find out what does and doesn't work for me. The site that I've been using to watch FMA does have most of these with the exception of a few but I notice a lot of the videos they embed come from sources that just aren't as nice to watch as the place they've been streaming the FMA videos from.

Since both you and BBM have recommended Buccano now I'll make that one of my priorities. I'll also try to check out Darker Than Black. It's going to take me a while to get through all this stuff though, unless I start watching multiple series at the same time, although I'm not sure how easy I'd find that.

Count my vote as well.

BBM's list hits the mark really, but I would add Black Lagoon to it.

Outlaw Star is fantastic. I first saw that when I was like 12 or 13 and I still love it at age 22.

Yeah, it's longer than that if you count the second season and OVAs. I think the first season is 26 and the second is about 13 or so.

Not sure if want. The anime turned out sorta bad/pointless. Unless the manga is finishing up soon, I don't see this turning out very well.

Hey guys! I'm not an anime expert by any means, but I've been watching a few series here and there just for kicks, and I was wondering if Elfen Lied is any good? I heard it was pretty violent, and that sounds like it would be pretty humorous. I've heard a few say it was great, others said it was shit, so I figured you guys would point me in the right direction.

What I've watched so far (not much, I know, I'm just getting into this stuff): Girls Bravo and Dragon Ball. (only the first 20 episodes, I need to get through to watching more.) I've seen a ton of Studio Ghibli films as a kid, of course, and the typical kiddie shows (Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, etc etc but I don't think those count for much).

Much obliged!

I don't know much about it, but everyone who tends to share my tastes even a little bit really hate that show. That's all I can say.

I watched the first 8 episodes, it seems alright I guess. I normally like the goofy aspect of anime (thus why I love Dragon Ball so much) and this aspect of goriness wasn't funny it was just... a little overboard to be honest. I got to an episode where it reveals the backstory of one of the characters and a bunch of kids beat a puppy to death. Not exactly "so gory it's funny" stuff right there.

Only got 5 more episodes to go, might as well finish it off, right?

I'm not usually interested in anime conventions because they're full of insufferable weeaboo dorks dressed in shitty costumes and shitty panels about Yaoi or whatever, but this year I'm going to a convention called AnimeCon in my hometown because Yoshihiro Takahashi, the creator of Ginga Nagareboshi Gin is going to be there.

If all you're looking for is action, it's alright. Just don't expect anything in the way of plot or character development.

I finished up Godannar. It definitely has its share of holes, but it was a fun and entertaining show to watch. The focus on the mechanics was refreshing when compared with other mecha shows.

Durarara's great. Some didn't enjoy the second season's pacing, but I didn't really see a problem with it. Especially because of the events taking place.

You should definitely give it three episodes.

Yeah I know, durarara is fucking epic. People in this club have such shitty taste and watch entry level shit all the time. Some of them are even like LOL DEFF NOTE/ EFLEN LEAD IS BEST ANIME EVUR!!! XXXXXDDDDDD

Also I think people should know more about true tears, I thought it was really good apart from the ending for a certain reason.
