It's a slow burning story, with the first several episodes needing to set up the characters and the events that take place with Dr. Tenma. If you're going to act impatient then you won't get much out of it.

Just keep going, it'll be well worth it.

I like where it's going and I've watched long shows before. I was honestly hoping they'd try to keep the murderer hidden longer but then again I figured out who it was almost immediately so I guess they weren't intending to hide it.

I hope that the villains aren't all as one dimensional as the Director and others but I doubt the series would get much praise if they were. I'll probably watch 4 or 5 episodes a fay and try to finish before the end of break.

Just finished watching Summer Wars a few hours ago. It wasn't really as good as people made it out to be, but it was still really entertaining. The animation was fantastic and the overall idea behind the story was pretty interesting. They could have done a lot more with it, but it was enough to keep me interested. Overall, good, but not amazing.

Like what? I thought everything was spread out reasonably well enough. It's not like anything was left hanging, or left to some vague interpretation.

Maybe if Hei from DtB rushed into the network and destroyed Love Machine with his electric attack or something you'd find it more enjoyable.

Just finished the second season last night. It was pretty good, especially when it had fun before things got serious. If you like classic fantasy RPGs then its worth a shot.
Next is Red Garden, Daughter of Twenty-Faces, and Shigofumi, with the latter being followed by Madoka, which got me interested once I learned about the staff brought together to work on it. Now I'm wondering whether to wait for the other half of the blu-ray releases, and whether to watch it at a 2 episodes per night pace rather than the usual 3, since I'm treating this as if its going to be the best thing I've seen since Legend of the Galactic Heroes or close enough to it.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'm back.

Prepare for disappoint, because Madoka doesn't even hold a candle to LOGH.

New Berserk trailer. I'm not sure how the other adaptation is like, but I'm okay with this.

And now I'm reminded that I'm still procrastinating on reading the manga. Seriously, I was thinking of catching up on it a while ago but I haven't. Considering the hiatus between new chapters, I guess it's not completely terrible that I'm way behind (about 1/4 through the Golden Age arc).

I agree with Mendou don't go in to it expecting a lot. It was worth watching but wasn't the best thing even so far this year imo.

Madoka is definitely better than Ano Hana if that's what you're implying.

I was just looking at the fall lineup. Hardly any of these look interesting to me, but hey, more Lupin! sweet! And a new Last Exile series? I'm very interested. Coppelion might be cool, too. maybe. Also I'm definitely all for a new animated Tekken movie, but not so much with Tekken 6 characters. They're pretty cool, but the Tekken characters that really matter are from 1-3.

Also, it looks like that Akira movie isn't going to happen. That is good news.

Because the movie was more or less "Japanese Tron" with an underplayed romance aspect to it.

So, just because I didn't think a movie was as good as everyone says it was, I'm automatically assumed to have a short attention span? I never complained about a lack of action. Besides, I said I enjoyed the movie, I just thought it wasn't as good as people made it sound.

Finished Gun Frontier. An enjoyable adventure/ride from start-to-finish, but it's far from being "best-of" material.

Gonna marathon some DBZ movies for the rest of the day, then tomorrow I'll watch Divergence Eve.

Eve had a kinda disappointing first episode, that's for sure.
-The CG was awkward and bad + the animation was fairly shitty during one of the CG moments

- OP/ED was overall disappointing in terms of music. Best part of this episode was the ED because it consisted of Misaki fanservice.

- technobabble and other shit that I hope is explained.

I guess the character designs aren't the worst I've ever seen -- the girls look decent. One of the reviews said it had a bad start, and I hope it does gets better.

fapfapfap Misaki's fucking moe as shit

Boohoo, baw some more about it. You remind me of the kind of people that go "EVERYTHING HAS TO BE ORIGINAL OR I WILL NOT ENJOY IT". Which is silly because hardly anything is exactly original anyway. It has parallel themes to Digimon: Our War Game more then anything since it's by the same director.

I was joking. You can not like a movie as much all you want, I just think you had odd standards or expectations of it. Summer Wars is not the most original thing, and the romance is left in the back burner, but that doesn't stop it from being a perfectly entertaining and moving film.

At 7/12/11 11:46 PM, Gobblemeister wrote: Monster was on Netflix so I started watching that to see what the big deal is. Is it really 74 episodes?

Yes.

because that's gonna take a while to get through and so far it's only okay.

Here's my full Monster review, WITHOUT any real spoilers for your personal convenience.

The first 14 or so episodes are kind of rushed, have a few plotholes and are overall not as absorbing as they could've been. But at the same time, the episodes are necessary: episode 9 specifically is probably the most boring episode of the series, but it's so important because it explains how the protagonist gets ahold of and learns how to use a gun... a detail that most animes actually leave out.

After that, so around episode 15 or 16, the series is pretty much amazing all the way up to the end.

The ending of Monster pissed me off though, I wish they ended it a different way. It was way too convenient of an ending for... well, everyone who survived. It was like a fairytale ending... but then again, that kind of fits some of the themes of the show so maybe that's what they were trying to do.

The only REAL problem with the show as a whole is characters:

Firstly, the show introduces three new characters for every one character they kill. It works relatively well from episode 15(when the show starts REALLY picking up) and to episode 50 or so, but by episodes 60+ there were so many characters doing so many different things that it was honestly quite hard to keep track of them all. Some of the main characters I had the impression were totally forgotten about by the author until the last episodes, like detector Suk, the psychologist who kept making me think "DIABETUS" and the lawyer guy.

Secondly, some characters were REALLY under or over used.

overused:
Roberto - "YEAH IMMA BASICALLY JOHAN'S RIGHT HAND MAN FOR THE ENTIRE SERIES, DESPITE ALMOST BEING KILLED COUNTLESS TIMES"

Ava - "I really didn't deserve to even be mentioned after episode 2, but let me keep popping up every 5 or 6 episodes just to piss the audience off!"

underused:
Diter or whatever the kid's name - "LOL I DIDN'T DO A SINGLE THING DESPITE BEING A CHARACTER FOR THE WHOLE SERIES, MY ONLY PURPOSE AT ALL IS TO BE A SYMBOLISM OF PURITY AND INNOCENCE."

Woolf - "I'm one of the most interesting characters in the series, here let me only be in three episodes towards the beginning and one episode towards the end and that's it!"

Lunge - "Hey there, i'm supposedly a main character who throughout the entire series seems like he's going to either fuck everything up for everyone else OR solve the johan mystery. Nope, all the other characters solved the mystery without me and I don't actually do much of relevance after the first twenty episodes"

Those two flaws with characters aside, Monster has some of the most amazing characters i've ever seen in an anime and the author has an intriguing way of making you love or hate a character by the end of the episode they're introduced in.

As for the plot, symbolism, etc. the show was great. I watched the dub, I plan on rewatching the show in jap one day. As for the dub's voices, all the major or semi-major characters are done greatly - the only characters whom's voices really suck are the extra characters... but that's to be expected in almost every anime. :P

Anyone else here whose seen monster should post their opinions as well, I want to know what other people thought of this show.

-Watched Iczer-1. Short OVA trilogy that sets up a sorta interesting world and characters, and I hope the sequels can live up to it. The Cthulhus are pure nightmare fuel.

-DBZ movies were altogether a blast with their fights, not much going for them story-wise. Janemba's fight was my favorite of the films I watched, and I'd ranked Meta-Cooler's fight as second (the actual battle between Meta-Cooler's main body was lackluster).

-Divergence Eve is bad in terms of animation - perhaps because of the budget probably going more toward the CG and eve then, it's still awful. The worst of them being Luxandra's movements in an episode (more or less single/still frames coming one-by-one for both of these cases) and Ertiana's eyes during another moment. Not like focusing on CG was actually good because the models of the Rampart Armors pretty much fuse together during one scene. The CG feels out-of-place with the rest of the show.

The characters are probably the most interesting part of the show (and not just for the TITS TITS TITS TITS. There's also the token loli that's an android), and even then, it's a 'B' at the most.

Plot's fairly average, but it's got me curious about what the 'Ghoul' (their enemy) are. The SCIENCE doesn't seem to be the main part of the show, though it does attempt to tell why some things are possible (though not necessarily believable).

All in all, an average show that [hopefully] could be better. Has attractive character design, despite the fact that their eyes overlap their hair. Please let that be intentional.

It's not the BEST ANIMES EVER, it's just good.

Because generally speaking, promoting a show you enjoy in a club about anime is typically how it goes.

You're about 4-5 years too late with that, btw.

I don't think he's overused since even though Johan is the main antagonist, Roberto is the one who carries out his wishes. He's still pretty vital to everything. He needs to be around often because he is Johan's sword and shield.

Ava - "I really didn't deserve to even be mentioned after episode 2, but let me keep popping up every 5 or 6 episodes just to piss the audience off!"

Eva is a great character, she changes a lot during the course of the show. It would have been lame to have her actually not be shown again after the first dozen episodes.

underused:

Woolf - "I'm one of the most interesting characters in the series, here let me only be in three episodes towards the beginning and one episode towards the end and that's it!"

Woolf? Are you talking about Helmut Wolf? Why does he need to be around more? The viewers figure out who he is and what he's done. There's no need to go into it any further.

You can at least spell some of these names correctly.

Lunge - "Hey there, i'm supposedly a main character who throughout the entire series seems like he's going to either fuck everything up for everyone else OR solve the johan mystery. Nope, all the other characters solved the mystery without me and I don't actually do much of relevance after the first twenty episodes"

Lunge is just as relevant to everything as everyone else in the show, he just indirectly investigates the Johan situation. And he helped out a lot during the final episodes.

No matter what seemingly little significance they present in the overall goal, every character still had their role. Monster is a journey.

Those two flaws with characters aside, Monster has some of the most amazing characters i've ever seen in an anime and the author has an intriguing way of making you love or hate a character by the end of the episode they're introduced in.

Monster is a good show by all means. I'm more interested in Yawara though.
