Tokyo? Not necessarily, but Akira is a film/manga very much about Japan (that is, post-war Japan) and the problems it faces. It would lose a bit of its thematic-relevance being set in another country.

The big question I have is why would you want to remake Akira? Akira was a film that was essentially incomprehensible in its 2 hour length, and I can't imagine that a live action version would fare much better.

It's not the only factor that goes in to choosing a anime but it is very important to me. Its like going to a art museum some times; I love it. Good animation is usually accompanied by a good storyline as well imo.

No it wasn't.

Uh huh, sure. Okay.

Perhaps I should be a little more specific.

I could follow the narrative of Akira. I didn't sit there dumbstruck trying to figure out what was going on on screen. There was a flow of events and, for the most part, one scene followed from the other.

But what the movie doesn't achieve (which, I imagine, the much longer comic does), and doesn't really attempt to achieve, is explaining any of the things that happen within it. It feels condensed. I know it is, but it feels that way too.

It's a movie that, for the most part, succeeds on its spectacle. And it definitely does succeed on that level. But I don't think its story, sans animation, would translate well to live-action for a Western film-going audience.

Akira has a variety of themes, especially the manga, which has a much richer story than the film adaptation(I suggest that any Akira fan who hasn't read it yet does so as soon as possible). It would be cool if the live action film had some parts from the comic book that the film didn't include, like the arc where Tetsuo reigns over Tokyo with Akira.

I finished Kuragehime the other day, if I'd known at the time that it's about a fashion-obsessed cross-dresser and a bunch of horrendously nerdy otakus (like, not your typically depicted anime otakus but obssessed about chinese history, old people, or jellyfish and shit), i'd have done my best not to watch it ever but I'm glad I did. It has an amazingly catchy intro song, great characters, and even if the ending was a bit rubbish (screams for a 2nd season though), it took a few steps away from the norm in terms of otakus (none of them are especially attractive, and after their almost obligatory makeovers they still look pretty nerdy and there are some hilarious moments when they just feel so out of place dressing up). There are some genuinely touching moments, mostly involving the protagonist and her mother, and an absolutely hilarious prime-minister.
I'd recommend it to anyone looking for an easy-to-watch slice-of-life that isn't all about either high school girls or fanservice.

Also after the commercial break in the middle there's this deep man's voice saying "tequila" each episode that to what end I can tell bears no relevance to anything in the show and cracks me up each time.

I watched Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari yesterday, I thought it was very good for a harem anime.

I ended up staying up til 3 in the morning to finish it, because it's and OVA series I didn't quite realise how long it would be, but it doesn't feel like it drags at any point.

It's a spin off from Tenchi Muyo but aside from 2 or 3 references that's completely irrelevant. The animation was really good and it feels more like a pre-2000 harem. It's funny at points, serious at points, but does it all well. The plot is actually taken seriously and isn't just an excuse for fan service, although there is plenty of that if that's what you're into.

I really enjoyed it and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a fun watch.

They had actually aged faster as a side-effect of using the psychic powers, and getting all kinds of drugs fed to them.

After all this talk about Akira I found myself in the comics section of the library today, and lo and behold for the first time I've seen, the first book of the Akira manga was available.

Usually most of the others will be there but the first one will be out.

So I got it out. I haven't started reading it yet.

Well, Fractale and Kore wa zombie desu ka finished and I got round to watching their final episodes this week.
Zombie was disappointing after a couple of funny first episodes it devolved into I'm Not Quite Sure What, but when it stopped being about how stupid he looked dressed up as a girl and started just being a regular harem with end-of-the-world elements (which completely resolved themselves pretty much, disappointing), I got bored. Eh.

Fractale on the other hand I really quite liked, perhaps it ended a little typically but I really enjoyed it. At no point did it ever stray too much from the norm and there's a little voice bugging me that it just wanted to be a movie, but gorgeous visuals and fun plot (although last ending had some moments where I wasn't sure what it was trying to be and I didn't really follow 100%) and cool characters, and a potentially devastatingly sad moment in a non-plot-critical episode (although some fans think it wasn't quite as relevant as it appears initially). Still yeah what I'm trying to get at in my rambling dithering way is yeah I enjoyed it, good fun.

Kinda lowered my expectations but I think I'll still watch it. I FUCKING LOVE CARD GAMES, MAN.

Kaiji's still at the top of my list, though. I'm definitely watching that.

Kanon is very much a series made for guys.

It is, after all, adapted from a pornographic visual novel.

There's an all-ages version of the VN, and the H-scenes are easy to skip.

Speaking of Kanon, I finished Makoto's route a short while ago and, boy, shit was so depressing. It was far better than Mai's.

Having heard no more about this series than this post, I'm going to guess that the series involves dogs, rather than the title simply referring to the hot days of summer.

Because for some reason people seem to think it's hilarious to take old cliches literally?

Like how when I hear the phrase 'whale of a time', I expect that it is describing something involving whales. It is not a good joke, I do not understand people that do this.

Just finished watching Real Drive, Golgo 13, and Mononoke. Now onto Berserk, Texhnolyze, and Black Butler. Also just watched the first episode of Tiger & Bunny, and it was so worth the five months of waiting. No disappointment whatsoever and shows promise.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'm back.

I just watched Sword of the Stranger. On BLU RAY.

I don't watch so many anime in HD so it's still kinda novel to me.

The movie was... Okay to good. The story was pretty generic, kinda dumb, and I couldn't figure out the motivations of an entire group of characters that just seemed to be in the story to act as pin-cushions. The characters were mostly either annoying, or lacking in personality. A good third or so of the film was pretty boring.

But the action scenes and amazing animation made up for that. Especially the extended one at the end of the film.

I'd recommend it if you're wanting an anime with action and great animation, but not so much if you're looking for an anime with a compelling story. I also wouldn't recommend it to anyone that's a bit squeamish because man, this movie is violent.

Also, interestingly, quite a sizable chunk of the dialogue is in Mandarin. I don't really see foreign languages (other than English) in anime so much.

There is a nation of dog people and a nation of cat people who are at war. Except in this strange world war is conducted as a Takeshi's Castle style event.
