Oh wow, I completely forgot about that series. I watched the first episode of it and gave up.

That episode just seemed to be:

I just like walking into stores and wandering around while asian chicks and dudes come up to me and chat.

Or, like, looking around, going "OMG HEY I DIDN'T KNOW THAT VOLUME CAME OUT!" and snapping it up and rejoicing.

I don't get much from stores these days, but pretty much every in-store experience I've ever had was great.

Like that one Walmart in Halifax that had like four volumes of Ranma 1/2 in a bargain bin, or the Music World (R.I.P.) that had Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex for $30 cheaper than the American retail price, or finding Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz on VHS in the back of a Sears that was getting rid of its electronics department, or buying about 2/5s of Robotech: The Macross Saga at Blockbuster for $4.

What were you thinking?

No, I bought it from a store. And it worked well for a while.

Anyway, they only put out the first four episodes of the first season, and I have the nagging feeling that any more won't be coming. There just isn't enough market for that stuff.

Unlike most people, I actually knew about Toradora before the show, so I don't associate Taiga with her shit VA.

And I've never seen or heard of any of this, so I haven't learned to associate this character you speak of with anything.

This is rather pathetic. I'm going through such a drought when it comes to good new anime that I feel compelled to comment on my ignorance of the subject. There were three good sources of Japanese Animation on television when I joined this club and they all dried up;
Cartoon Network is devoting an increasing amount of air-time on shows that aren't even cartoons. Tim and Eric WTF?!
International Channel became AZN TV and, strangely enough, aired a little less anime. It went belly-up within a year of the market shift.
The Anime Network, probably the main reason I switched from Time Warner to WOW, discontinued its 24/7 service about a month after I started watching it. It's almost as if they're intentionally f***ing with me.
Someone please point me in the right direction or put me out of my misery.

Watched the second disc of GTO with the parental units.

Mum laughed when Kunio and his pals were watching Onizuka shower and then spray shit on his nuts. Nearly killed me mum with laughter.

Many other laughs, so it was good that she actually came round to watch it and enjoy it, like me dad did.

And she snorted when my dad was on the phone, so many lulz were had with my brother and I when she ran out of the room to giggle.

There's no such thing as good modern anime, so investing in some bullets would be a good idea.

Unless you can wait till October for the second season of Kaiji.

Usually I account speak like that as elitism and blindness to the faults of the old works flaws, but yeah, the recent stuff can be pretty dire.

Here's hoping Black Lagoon season 3 will be AWWWWWWWWWWRIGHT.

Oh yeah. Did I mention that I finished watching Lain? cuz I finished watching Lain, and it was good. And now I'm not sure what I want to start watching next. maybe GITS 2 and SAC. I want to re-watch the first movie if I'm going to do that, though.

What are your opinions on flashbacks in anime?

How often should they be and how long should they be and how many characters should have them in a anime that's 20 episodes long? 50 episodes long?

sounds like filler material to me.

If the show is long, maybe a quick recap is okay, but they're really not necessary.

At 3/5/09 12:00 AM, Mendou wrote: They're normally innapropriate and annoying imo. Most of the time they show up when they really don't need to, and they are distracting to the main plot. Also depends on what characters are focused on in the flashbacks, if they're about someone you don't care about or someone with an uninteresting past, then the flashback becomes mere annoyance.

Alright, what about in animes were the unknown past is one of the key elements of the series?

Like animes that start off with plots that you don't understand because they are already so far into the story despite it being the first episode? Or animes that focus on characters that no one knows anything about?

How long(Like what episode) should it take for their to be flashbacks in those two types of shows? And assume they are necessary to the plot and not boring/shit.

Anyway try watching Trigun like this:
Don't watch anything Trigun in like a year+
Try and forget everything about the show as much as possible.
Watch episodes 1 - 16 of Trigun, only pretend you're watching the series for the first time.
Skip episode 17 and watch episodes 18 - 25.
THEN watch episode 17 followed by 26.

If you do that then the series becomes a lot better because it creates the mystery of what happened? And then it becomes a great mystery series in addition to it's already existing genre's.

Seriously, you guys should watch the show like that for an amazing experience.

You say flashback, but I think you're actually talking about re-caps, that is flshback featuring scenes that have already been shown. Actual flashback scenes are when we see something that happened earlier, but hadn't been shown before.

Anyway, like any narrative device, it can be used well and bad. Really long or disjointed ones, or confusing ones of course are annyoing.

Most flashbacks in anime have the tendency, at least in my experince, to not really explain what they're about, you see some short scene, usually silent, and have to connect the dots yourself. Depending ont he context, it works or doesn't.

Note to self: NEVER BUY ARABIC BOOTLEG ANIME DVDS AGAIN!

I got this one called Sword of the Stranger, it's a fairly stereotypical samurai with a troubled past anime movie, but I'm finding it rather enjoyable. I'm two hours into it, it's three and a half hours long. Thirty minutes ago the english subtitles stopped working. The arabic subtitles work fine, the audio is in japanese only. I can't read any arabic, and I'm far from fluent in japanese, so I've spent the past half hour trying to work out the gist of what the fuck everyone is saying, especially since plot is finally happening.

Why the hell did I volunteer to come back to this shithole country?

I got Sword of the Stranger a while ago and watched like half of it before getting distracted and doing something else. I haven't been very motivated to sit down and watch the rest. It seemed alright, though, I guess.
