And because I am sure that all Authority Figures and Admins are well spoken people themselves, I see no problems with them being the interviewers which ask questions as they see fit. And since this is all human-input, it can be even more interesting to deliver follow up questions which can get to know the interviewee more if they appear to be interesting people.

And if the interviewee cannot deliver their answers properly or are plain rude, boot.

Precisely.

I don't really care if the "top ten" stays or go, because it honestly doesn't prove much other than the fact the user is capable of narrowing down the stuff they've seen down to a few favorites.

Because copypasta can be microwaved and eaten as it is, even if it pales in comparison to freshly cooked copypasta.

I would much prefer to take a novice fan under my wing (as a servant/student/apprentice*) than to put up with the cocky spammers thank you very much.

Sounds good. Just a few concerns about the details: How and where should these interviews take place?

I ask "how" because I don't think the questions should be carried out under the flag of elitism. Simultaneously, I ask "why" because I am a bit unsure as to whether these interviews should or even can be public for the following reason.

Firstly, I'm a little concerned that the two-way nature of the questioning could be or become confrontational. I don't think the questioning should be tailored to or be different for every single member-hopeful. There should be a standard line of questioning.

I also worry that the interviews, by virtue of implementation, may be disruptive to the flow of thread conversation if held on the BBS. Unfortunately, at the moment, I can't come up with a practical way to make the information conveyed in these interview to be transparent, if not public. If the interviews are private or are held on the forum, the information about the member should be available on the BBS in a minamalistic or summary-like manner.

Standard questioning is functional, but it also breeds standard answers.

Tailoring questions to fit an individual, if anything, actually shows we care about member-hopefuls.

I also worry that the interviews, by virtue of implementation, may be disruptive to the flow of thread conversation if held on the BBS.

Combo-breakers are inevtiable anyway. Plus, this way all the authority figures can chat with new kids.

If the interviews are private or are held on the forum, the information about the member should be available on the BBS in a minamalistic or summary-like manner.

Meh, seems sort of wasteful and unnecessary.

Gendo, points taken.

What you say all makes sense, even to me. But I'm curious as to what kind of questions might be asked? What should a hopeful expect to answer when they are interviewed? I don't oppose tailoring outright, but I think you'll need a few standard questions in the mix. Like a job interview, a jobseeker expects certain questions to be asked as well as be ready for anything. The process should have a level of fairness to it.

I'm a bit hesitant think a completely arbitrary process will work as well as you present it. In this day and age, rules and laws aren't supposed to arbitrary in practice. Ideally, when a hopeful reads the club rules before they decide to join, they should see the rules as fair to all. I'm sure there can be a balance of questions standard and tailored questions that doesn't compromise the process.

At 5/1/07 06:58 PM, LLStarks wrote: Sounds good. Just a few concerns about the details: How and where should these interviews take place?

The interviews take place here on NG/A/ so it can 'log' the conversation and the interviewee's answers and replies.

The interviewers would be either an NG/A/ admin or mod (Authority Figure), and the process and questions asked during the interview would be asked according to the interviewer's discretion.

Though multiple interviewers is possible, It might trigger multiple repeated questions (Hivemind!) so I advise against it.

I ask "how" because I don't think the questions should be carried out under the flag of elitism. Simultaneously, I ask "why" because I am a bit unsure as to whether these interviews should or even can be public for the following reason.

So the viewers reading the interview can know them better too, of course.

Firstly, I'm a little concerned that the two-way nature of the questioning could be or become confrontational. I don't think the questioning should be tailored to or be different for every single member-hopeful. There should be a standard line of questioning.

There are only so many basic questions anyway, so I would not be worried about the 'tailoring' you mention. The tailoring would only consists of one or two follow-up questions anyway.

VERY Farfetched example:

Me: So Replijin HF, please tell us a bit about yourself.

Replijin HF: Sure! I come from the Green Planet, and I will be 12 years old this year. I enjoy video games and watching Anime during my free time. Though I have not watched too many shows so far, I wish to learn more from everyone in this club!

Me: What kind of video games do you usually play?

Replijin HF: I like robot battle games like Custom Mecha, though I also play Ouendama and Gandome ZEED shooter games on the GreatWonderSwan3X.

Me: So, what big titles do you watch?

Replijin HF: I enjoy watching Nekketsu Yuushaman GaGaGatchi, of course! I am still waiting for GaGaGatchi FINAL to come out, the DVD trailer that came with this week's issue of ChouOoGata Magazine is incredible. I even have the 1:400 Plamo of King Snow on my desk which I built!

Spot the references. XFD
I also worry that the interviews, by virtue of implementation, may be disruptive to the flow of thread conversation if held on the BBS.

Since there are not too many newcomers going onto NG/A/ for entry requests at the same time, I don't think it is too big of a problem.

Haro, you make the whole process sound so complicated. You and the others have the right idea, I think it could benefit if it was scaled down. If you guys can make it work "as is", more power to you.

Additionally, just for laughs, take me for example. I might not even pass the "test" depending on the questions being asked.

For instance, if you asked me:

"Do you own any anime or manga? If so, specify a few examples."

I'd say "yes" and explain that I own two unwatched DVDs of Texhnolyze and a single volume of the Negima manga.

However if you asked me questions like:

"What anime/manga, new or old, are you currently watching/reading?"

I'd be able to give an answer like "Bleach, Death Note, Lucky Star, Hayate no Gotoku, and the Inuyasha manga"

Additionally, if you asked me a wildcard like:

"What do you do for fun?"

I might answer "plenty of drugs" or "scanlating manga"...

It's all about presentation.

But it's boring if it is that generic. And so far, the interview screening method is working just fine.

At 5/1/07 07:20 PM, HaroFreak wrote: VR Demo with Replijin HF.

Ah what the heck, I might as well finish this pseudo-interview for fun.

Me: That is some impressive fandom you display. Can you tell me which character resembles you the most so you can go by that identity?

Replijin HF: Hm, I have not given it much thought, but it would have to be Mamori from GaGaGatchi! He is a small yet fun character to have around!

Me: Well, before I welcome you to NG/A/, answer this last question:

What is a man?

Replijin HF: (Wait, wait! I think I know this one...) A miserable little pile of secrets! But enough talk, have at you!

Meme-referencing and over-the=top unrealisticness =/= specific

Starks just wants us to give him a boring example for the sake of outlining how the process works, we can throw our own individual touches on during the actual interviews.

Why yes, Starks, I do.
OHWAIT.
Roffle, as far as personally tailoring interviews, I think that sounds great. I think they should be held in PMs or in IM, however, provided the interviewers promise not to make the interviewees cyber-blow them in order to gain entry.
Or cyber-ANYTHING them, for that matter. THAT'S FOR YOU HARO, I'M WATCHING YOU!

You're not required to explain yourselves to kouga.

Also, I thought it'd been established that I am the God-king of this club. That's what Gendo (the dictator) said anyway.

The interview should be held in IM or PM's, I would however request that another authority figure see's a copy of it, so one person doesn't decided to let their friends who don't know crap about shit in (I'm looking at you Gendo).

What do you mean "in your opinion"? It's a fact. There was no hentai in that post. It was a screen cap from Digimon Adventures 02, which is not a hentai show. It's a kids show, and if you can consider kids shows hentai then I don't know what's wrong with you.

I'm pretty damn sure that you've allowed discussion of relative attractiveness of characters before in this bloody thread.
I have, but this time I felt you were taking it too far.

Taking it too far? How so?

I don't give a flying fuck about your bloody hentai board on your forum's, why the hell would I want to post in it? You know I can't respond to that particular post in the hentai board on your forum, can I?
I don't care. Too bad for you.

I believe it seems more of a too bad for you, since you're the one complaining about me posting safe for work images.

I don't think almost everyone in this club hates Inuyasha. Most just got sick of the show because it dragged on and wasn't all that original, but "Hate" is a strong word. I mean the show had some cool villians, like the Band of 7 and Sesshomaru, and Naraku wasn't that bad...just annoying with all the regeneration.

And the character Inuyasha wasn't bad either. If you remove Kagome from him, he was a pretty cool and not all that nice. Lots of times Kagome had to convince him to go out of his way to stop a demon that was terrorizing humans. Tetsaiga was also pretty cool as far as big swords go.

So..Don't make generalizations about what all the members of this club think!

Awesome...
