Is this a discussion question? If so I have a few answers.
It is just part of the interview process that me and the NG/A/ 'Mods' are planning to use in place of the old "Ten Anime Titles" entry requirement.
I believe that it would get to know the newcomers easier and therefore be a more effective initial screening process (to know who is fit to join and who is better off told to GTFO).
I don't claim to the know or even begin to fathom the full scale of these plans, but based on what you are saying, I agree.
I'm somewhat glad that "Top Ten Favorite Anime Titles" is being phased out in favor of a more n00b-proof system. In retrospect, while it satisfactorily met the standards of myself and other leaders at the time of its inception, it had little foresight in how it would be applied other than preserving an "even bakas can join" mentality. All it did was cleverly avoid a longstanding issue. I won't go as far to say that my original premise and reasoning for creating this club was flawed, but I will admit that change is good in small doses. As trends come and go, we shall adapt.
In my opinion, I don't think we should abandon the "Top Ten" in it's entirety. Club rules can and should be changed. But I don't traditions should be discarded so easily. These now-defunct requirements represent a part of our past are among the things that original made this club fun. I think that the original requirements should stay, not as the rule of law, but helpful and highly optional supplements to the new requirements. I believe, that a simple question like "If there is a character that you want to be or resembles you the closest, who would it be?" might not be sufficient enought on its own.
If you dissect it word by word, "If there is a character that you want to be or resembles you the closest, who would it be?" is not that much better than the current requirement of picking "a character to represent you and the anime (or manga) that character is from". Granted, it does deeply expand upon the current rule, but it doesn't really tell me that person's tastes right off the bat and this is why I kindly suggest that "Top Ten" is maintained if not as a rule, but by habit of tradition.
Whatever you, and the other mods decide to do in the end, I will endorse it.
