Though freaky and possible twisted (i.e. hentai), if a character has the ability to swap genders easily, I don't see why not given that no one else should have occupied the gender-bent character regardless of gender.

I'm not happy about a second season happening at all. I felt that the ending was good enough and that moar anime would be unnecessary. There are already nine-billion light novels, and there are (supposedly) still a few more to go.
I'm just worried that it will get Musashi'd or have a sub-standard story.

Neither am I, mainly because I prefer less 'bittersweet' endings in Haruhi's case with no 'absolute conclusion' unlike many endings.
Sure, there is the loss of not having an epic-level ending such as "and then everybody died!", but that is what Super Robot Shows are for.

Yeah, I was really fond of the ending's "draw to your own conclusions/read the damn books, all this TV is bad for your eyes" feel.

Gendo, you're judgment on anime has never failed. I started watching Haruhi Suzumiya this morning and the first episode left me saying "What the hell did I just miss." and the second episode made me glow inside a little when I figured out that it's fairly random and meant to be watched out of order. Again you've given me somthing excellent to watch.
