Well my brother just RROD'd my xbox... it was bound to happen the way he plays it (12 hours a day).
AutoSave?
If you haven't downloaded this Flash extension. I recommend it dearly. Have you ever had the moment where you were working on something for hours and suddenly Flash crashes on you? Than this is the extension for you. :)
"This extension adds a new panel to the Flash Authoring Tool, that enables you to specify an interval for automatically saving the document you are presently working on. Intervals can be set in minutes or hours.
The Auto Save panel can be found in:
Window > Other Panels > Auto Save."

patent 7272424? lawl, wolinsky. are you robert or scott?
RE: Autosave
I've never timed myself, but I think I save about every 10-20 seconds or so. It happens automatically really, I am my own autosave.
Programmer/Artist Collaboration
How do you guys match up for game development? Is there some sort of secret club that I'm not aware of? Do you just pm an artists/programmer when you're looking for someone? Or do you all have eachother's IM? I'd like to give animating for a game a shot so if one of you programmers is interested and has an idea lying around throw me a pm.
Autosave
Would've been useful 3 years ago before I started ctrl+s'ing like a madman. Come to think of it, since we're all flash whiz kids here, does anyone NOT ctrl+s in here?
always behind schedule.
90% of my code is in external .as files anyway, so I have to save to test anything. Which means I save pretty often. However I'll still get the extension because if I do lose any work due to a crash I'll kill myself for not getting it.
I heard there's a built-in option in flash to auto-save whenever you compile...is that true or a rumor?

To be perfectly honest, I'm still in the flash noob department -- I'll just use that extension since I'm an idiot. I usually save whenever I get the chance too or come to think of it. It'll be easier for me since sometimes I work with HUGE projects that lag alot when opening the .fla file so the autosave extension would be better for me.

I never actually heard of that actually.
i dont like the autosave.. i like having multiple versions based on each day i work on it... i eventually clean em out when im done. Woe be you if you're putting all your marbles on a single file version of your next waterlollies and you end up corrupting it.
None
I'll probably start saving in multiple files if or when one of my files gets corrupted, but that hasn't happened yet, flash has crashed many times though, so I've trained myself to ctrl+s compulsively just to get rid of the asterisk that appears when you haven't saved, I probably save too much, if you believe in such a thing.
RE Auto Save
I'm definitely going to grab that. I've been using flash for years, and I am pretty decent about ctrl S'ing all the time, however if I get deep into thought and I start to code something up I completely lose track of anything but what I'm coding. This leads into an hour long rage of coding and every now and then flash will crash and I'll mutter fuck to myself for roughly 20 minutes after. Thanks for that, useful stuff.
Here are the guidelines I have set for myself:
Per Compile: Ctrl+S, Ctrl+Enter to compile a file. It's a habit I got into and if you trick yourself into thinking this is how you compile a file you'll never have to worry about autosaving.
Per Work Session: Save As... to save a version for that day.
Per Week: Back up all new FLA versions to external hard disk.
Per Month: Check your backup FLA's on your external disk to make sure that they are still functional. Just double-click a few to insure quality.
Per Year: Back up all FLA's to another external media such as a DVD-R. Archive and lockaway.
Hi there!
RE: Backing up
my dad has a windows home server box set up, and it automatically backs up every computer on the network every week. it's pretty handy.
i used to back my stuff up on CDs, but then i moved onto using my Zen Touch as my primary back-up. since then, i sort of just use whatever i can, like my flash drive and my sd memory card. this home server makes things a lot easier.
thats way too much work john.. flash is fun not boot camp!!!!

Yep, that's how I compile aswell.
My evening (so far..)
So me and most of my classmates went to a park and had some barbeque and beer to celebrate that it's only ten days left until shool's over. We had a really nice time, but when I thought it was time to call it the night, everybody was going to a club about 30 minutes away. So I tagged along, just to realize halfway there that I had no legimitation. I am 18, and I do even look older than I am, but there was no way for me to get in without my legimitation.
Before that this evening had been very nice, but now I'm stuck at some crappy computer you have to pay by the hour to use, waiting for my friends to have enough >.<
So yeah, entertain me, or something :D

Speaking of frustration -- How do you guys deal with it? Usually when I'm bothered, I get away from the things that would pester me -- like people asking all these questions or things that'll just add fuel to the fire. I always like going for a walk and just going outside to smell the roses and get a wiff of fresh air. It's always nice.
Either that, or I just listen to my iPod like some Frank Sinatra or Michael Buble. Man, I freaking love that type of music now.
Dancing Cheek to Cheek -- that's where it's at.

Haha, I'm sooo terrible about that, especially when I'm doin my pixel/grid stuff. I get really into it, and then I compile and in the middle it always lags and sometimes crashes...Pixel/Grid is fun to do, except when you have to do the same thing twice...then its really gay
Thank you for the link Rudy, I downloaded it :P
Frustration
I play or make some music. It's a good way to relieve your stress, cause there's not much that can go wrong and often times the music reflects the emotional state you're in, or visa versa. If you're bored, sometimes it helps to make some energetic or frantic music to help speed up your day (for example: my latest audio submission was the result of boredom. It's like... heart attack inducing frantic.)
Backing Up
I plan to eventually get an apple Time Capsule when I'm off at college. It's not a bad price for a 1 TB wireless backup drive formatted for RAID if I wanted (which I would). I mean, you can get cheaper hard drives... but the simplicity of having it be wireless (good for my laptop which I don't want to be tethered to all my accessories all the time) and automatic (Time Machine FTW) is worth it.
At 6/3/08 07:58 PM, Gutya wrote: Why not just go home?
Like I said, it was 30 minutes away (by car, I would've written the length instead of time but you silly Americans have your own systems for everything so it wouldn't have worked very well ;] ).
My Evening (the rest of it)
Not very long after I wrote my last post I was told by a guard that I had to leave the place where they had those computers, as it apparently had shut down like one hour earlier (I was sitting far into the corner, so he missed me first time round), so then all there was to do was to go and wait outside the club for 40 minutes (1.20AM, and I only wore t-shirt and "long shorts".. pretty cold :/ ). Then finally, at 2AM, the club shut down for today and eventually I was on the way home.
Then all there was left was to get dropped off at the place where I have left my bike, and ride that home in the cold with just aforementioned clothing.
The clock is now 3.35AM, and I'm lying tucked down in my bed with my laptop. It feels so good :3
Alright dawgs, check this option out (press ctrl-u to bring up these options)
IT'S NOT JUST A RUMOR!

I somehow have a feeling we are going to return to this page in a few months when the next reg gets a corrupt FLA or broken hard drive. I'll make sure to bookmark this page as a gentle "we talked about this a few months ago" link.

Sweet, good to know, although I don't think I would want to save that often. As a coder I often royally screw things up so I would be scared to put that on. Although I could just save as and then work with that... hmmmm... good stuff.
Thanks for the info :)
RE Dealing with Frustration
I generally play piano, nothing in the world aside from the company of a caring female can relax me more then that, and I'm currently short of a caring female.
Joy!
Yayz, today I went to a friends house, and he has 2 PSOnes. He gave me one of them! Now I can play oldskool games (FF7, FF8, Crash Bandicoot, Megaman Legends, etc.) yay!
Tablets.
Do ALL Tablets work with flash. I don't think I wanna buy a Wacom one, when there are so many cheaper ones around, that seem to be just as good. Just a question.
Cheers.

Wow, crazy 13-year old adventures...
autosave
I don't want any AutoSave ever.
I like to be in total control of what I do and if Flash would auto save I'd feel less in control.

I have a PSOne. ^^
I sold both my PS2's though and my PS3's fan doesn't like me much anymore. I enjoy playin' ol' school games like DIgimon World 1, Twisted Metal 2, and in the case of getting the Super Nintendo from my sis - Desert Strike and Super Mario World 2.
I sadly missed the ol' school FF games. I've seen FF7, FF8, and FF9 been played at friends houses but never played it myself. I fear if I play it I'll want to watch Advent children, play the 3rd person shooter one with Vincent, and that Crisis Core one. I do not have the time to get wrapped up in a franchise.
Graduation
My commencement rehearsel is this morning... in rought 40 mins from now. ( I hate waking up early for crap.) Turns out that I got all my courses between 55% - 68%. All I need to do is pass my provincial exams and I graduate. ^^
Last day of classes for me at the end of next week.
Totally skipping last day of school like I have for years. :P
