AutoSave
I like Microsoft's passive autosave. If your Word document crashes it has a "recovery version" that you can optionally take when you reboot the program. It's non-intrusive and doesn't make you lose control of your personal saving options.

I like to be in total control of what I do and if Flash would auto save I'd feel less in control.

That's silly. Would you feel more in control if your computer shuts down by accident and your game / document is erased, or if you can still have the document after the unexpected accident? I'd feel more in control if I know that no matter what happens to my computer I will still be in control of my file. Not that I judge things on whether i feel in control with them or not.

I dont remember the ap. i think it was indesign or maybe Quark.. but it had a builtin sav thing ... it wouldnt like literally save over your file but create a ghost and if you had an outage or unnatural exit it would ask you if you want to work from the last checkpoint. That would be sweet.

Flash F***-Ups
I've made a separate .fla file in which I test the scenes I make in my main .fla file. I convert the scenes I have in my main file to movieclips and export them to the separate file, I put some music under it and see if it all flows nicely. Anyway, to my huge annoyance my movie was lagging like a m*therf*cker, so I've been optimizing everything the last couple of days to see if I could squeeze a better performance out of it. None of it seemed to work so I used some piece of AS to see where everything started to lag. The movie ran at a constant 12 frames per second, turned out I forgot to change the frame rate...

Anything similar ever happened to you?

I'll tell you why. Because the files your working with can be up to 200 MB +
As well as that, it can take 10-20 seconds to save when your working with that kind of file. Word documents can easily be recovered as its just a few kilobytes, but saving 200 megs in the second that your power cuts off is virtually impossible.

Thats my guess :P

Large Filesize FLAs

So... when you import an MP3 into flash it decompresses it before saving... then compresses it again when exporting. Wouldn't it make more sense for it to just keep it compressed when you save?

Also... is there a way to directly link to MP3s and have them be embedded in the SWF but not in the FLA? It might make it easier to back up the FLA if you don't have to worry about the hard drive space.

WORLD JUGGLING DAY

As I'm sure none of you alrwady know, World Juggling Day is coming up (16th I think). So I would like to take this opportunity to convince you guys to learn to juggle.

Seeing as you all do animations/programming, it's clear that you all like learning new things and doing things that not many people can do.

If this is correct, juggling is the perfect hobby for you. I guarentee, that if you start juggling now, you
could juggle 3 balls easily by the end of the week. This time next month you'll have about 5 different tricks you can do, and you'll be able to juggle 4 balls.

This time in 6 months you'll have a whole range of 3 ball tricks, you'll be able to do a few 4 ball tricks, and you will be able to get at least 10 catches of 5 balls.

I have been juggling a year, and now I can juggle 6 balls quite well, I can get about 10 catches with 7 balls, and my 4 and 5 ball tricks are coming along nicely.

Juggling is seriously an amazing hobby. You improve so fast, and before you know it, you're doing things that a few weeks ago, you wouldn't even dream of.

All you have to do is be patient, and have a positive attitude. One of the hardest things to learn in juggling (until you meet 5 balls) is the 3 ball cascade (base pattern). After 1 month, you'll be able to do a good variety of tricks, including this, this, and maybe even this. Use that knowledge to motivate you to juggle.

Also, I should warn you that sometimes the best method of learning is taking a break. Sometimes I'll try a trick loads and won't improve at all, but I'll come back the next day and I will have improved loads.

Ok, so that is why you should learn to juggle. And now for how. I found
kingscascade.com really helpful at the start. It has loads of 3 ball tricks, and a few basic 4 and 5 ball tricks.

The main thing to make sure is don't try tricks before you're ready for them. Start with the 3 ball cascade, and then pck a few from the list on the left to learn. Look at the difficulty rating he's given it, and learn accordingly. Theres no harm in trying a rediculously hard trick every now and again, but make sure you get the basics perfected before going on to the 4s and 5s.

I urge you to at leaat learn a 3 ball cascade. You get far more out of juggling than just a new skill. You get a conversation starter, a hobby, a challenge, and higher self esteem and self confidence.

Do it for Cybex.

I shall leave you with some videos (not made by me) of the sort of tricks that you WILL one day be doing with balls, clubs and rings:

Amazing 3 ball video
Different style of 3 ball juggling
4 ball tricks
5 ball juggling
insane juggling

I can't be bothered to show you any ring/club juggling because i'm more into balls. But rings and clubs are just/if not more exciting.

If you have any juggling related questions, PM me. I don't check my PMs much, but I'll check this thread even less.

PLEASE JUGGLE!!!!

World Juggling Day
Sure Cybex, I'm in. I can *sort of* do three balls, but it's very exaggerated and not very fluid. I'll work towards getting that down.

Ive had a weird day today..

First it was good cos i had a sub for art class.. and i was drawing my plan for my clay model of a fat man.. that was fun.. then i had something boring.. Then break, then P.E

So i get on the astroturf, and we do a lil warm up jog.. i try jumping in the goal post and fall off and my leg twists one way, i find it hard to walk so my mate, jezz, comes over and helps me out.. so we get to where everyone else is and i sit down on the floor take off my sock and shoe.. and then say "is that normal" as i have the fatest lump where my ankle should be.. I gte carried to the medical room.. they call my step dad, he takes me to the hospital everyones saying its brokenn.. im like oooh fuck.. and then i have an xray and that bitch just wacks my ankle.. im ,like ouch then i get to the doctors she says i have no fucking clue what it is come back in 5 days.. put no weight on it.. so now i have to have crutches..

GHEYYY!

Well done for trying, but don't give up. Juggling isn't something that only a few people are capable of doing. Anyone can do it.

When you learned to ride a bike, did you just get on and discover that you could do it? I'm guessing not. You probably practised a bit and eased it in with stableizers. The same goes with juggling. Just ease it in with 2 balls, and practise a few times, and I guarentee you'll start to see progress after about 20 attempts.

The only difference between juggling and riding a bike is that riding a bike is part of growing up. You don't give up because you know that you'll eventually be able to do it, because everyone can. If you have that same asttitude with juggling, where you totally believe that you wqill eventually get there, learning to juggle becomes so much easier.

Also, yay to jmtb juggling too. A lot of the time when people can juggle a bit, but it doesn't look very stable, its because of a common bad technique where you try and catch the ball coming down and throw a new one at the same time. This tehnique makes learning tricks, and solidifying your pattern a lot harder. Make sure the releasing of a ball and catching the other ball are two different events.
