I love Nathaniel Milburn's pico day submission but he would be doing much better without all the surrealism. Some of the stuff is good but when the people start fading in and out for no reason or the background flickers into different settings it draws away from the story. All in all I voted 10 though!

Did you like the game with him!?

Movies vs. Games
I'm curious, does anyone else think it might be a bit better if the Games section and Movies section were both visible when Newgrounds is loaded. I always forget to look down there for games, but I guess it's possible that more people come to Newgrounds for movies. Anyone know the statistics?

Woohoo front page!

I guess it's a good idea to give movies more prominence - every Tom, Dick and Harry has a site for games these days - movies are a bit more NG.

Even so, I liked it when the front page was mixed. It would have been even better if the icons for submission type had been more visible. Maybe they should have a 'best of both' section at the top with two or four submissions in it.

It's barely even halfway over..? Plus there's no flood of shitty submissions clogging the portal but I'm sure there will be later on tonight, the stuff that's coming out seems like people actually put a lot of time and thought into it (which is always good). Anyways, I bet most of the big movies haven't even come out yet.

always behind schedule.

I would be the first one to tell you that...but I was at school.

Ok, so I just submitted my thing, I and I realized that Tom said movies wouldn't get as much money as games with the newgrounds API

Ahh well, its all for fun

So much Awesomness. All the games I've played have been very enjoyable =D El-Presidente and Bomtoons really outdid themselves on the coding.

El-Presidente outdid himself so much he didnt even notice when you beat the game, u get agameover screen :P XD

Nice job guys.

No, I think you'd have to really squash them onscreen to do that. It might look like too much information at once. I personally mostly scroll passed the movies unless something really stands out.

Really? I think the boss in that had REALLY too much health. Like he wasn't that hard, but I was fighting it for so long, I died and just don't want to play it again. Lots of things could've been designed better. Whatever, I won't go on.

It doesn't happen to me. Go play again and tell me if it happens. Maybe you had no HP and camped... you just have to move and wait till he dies and a few seconds after. Also, I set the hp to 100 when he dies now, so check...

Pico Day = Over.
Pico Day has came to an end, Many of you users will trail off onto other projects after waisting hours of your day trying to complete your PD submissions. But the question is, what are you plans after Pico Day? What do you have in store for the Newgrounds community?

Do you personally think Pico Day was a disappointment or a success? Share your views. :)

Honestly, To start off the new day after Pico Day, I'll probably just get back to working. I've been working non-stop, but I can't stop now. Motivation is in my veins and bloodstream. I'm just hoping it lasts.

First, I'll finish the "Animation Challenge Weeks 4-6" Submission for Newgrounds, so everyone can vote, and people can stop bugging the shit out of me when it'll be finished. (Heck, they want their money eh?)

Second, I'll probably start on this little animated short I have in mind. It'll feature some old Dad and his daughter, and they will come across something very interesting. I'm hoping to maybe make a little "mini-series" with the pedo-dad and prep-daughter. We'll see though. They will probably be about 30 seconds long though. Not too epic.

Third, I want to start a collab to start off the new year. I haven't really ran a nice 08' collab yet, but one thing I'm planning to do, is group up a few famous NG artists on this one, and see where it'll take me. It won't be released to the public, until it's finished. ;)

That's about it so far, I have a few ideas in mind, Renivating my site, adding additions and updating, along with screwing around with codes or whatever. I have alot to do... Heck, anyone planning for their Madness and Clock Day submissions yet? Not me. :3 I should think of atleast something though... Eh, It's like 5 months away, IT CAN WAIT.

List of My Pico Animations, Just incase you missed the horrible animations:
Nene's Nude Photos
Tom's Birthday Song

Toodles, for now.

OFF TO WORK.

ADS BROKEN:

I think the ad stuff is broken because the new month started. Everything's all wonky in my control panel too. I guess that's why they're still in "Beta."

Broken Ads

Noticed it too. I'm not too worried. Whatever problems their are will be fixed before we realize it and I'm sure Tom will find a way to make up for any missed time. I'm just happy to be in the BETA. : )

Ol' Friends and Books

An ol' friend of mine from the begining of my high school life said hi to me today and me and her were able to chat a bit 'bout life and such. The interesting thing in all this is why she said hi in the first place. She's been making plans for writing a book. I'm not excatly sure what kind of book, but she asked if I could type out some stories from the past and give 'em to her for the book.
From the talk we had today, it sounds like a help book. I guess this because the majority of the stuff she talked about putting in it was poeple dealing drug problems, family problems, the criminal world, spirituality, religion, and overall life.
My first reaction was saying a bold "No.", as I've never even read more then 6 novels in my life above the 8th grade reading level. However I think I'm goin' to send her a few stories I think are worth mentioning and could help poeple. I think I'd also ask her to edit some things to keep it more personal.
I don't know... I'll see where this all goes. Not every day someone asks you to write a story or two 'bout your life for a book. I'm only bloody 18, this whole thing made me feel like some 80+ war veteran or somethin'. :S

It's likely to be mine as well, although Burnout Paradise is giving it a run for its money (even more thanks to the DLC announcements). Mind you, the rest of the release schedule for 2008 looks blockbusteriffic as well. Rock Band*, Metal Gear 8, Smash Bros Brawl*, Alone in the Dark 5 and Gears of War 2 should make for major headline news...

Looks like a good year for Quadruple A** sequels...

* UK release schedule SUCKS...

Bizzarre things you've done in Flash, just randomly...
Yesterday I made a fun translator program that I debated making a while back for use within RPG engines where there's a language barrier.

Rather than do a simple Caeser cypher (ala Al Bhed) or replace text you don't understand with randomly generated gibberish, the code splits the words into a chain of bigrams (and a single letter at the end if the word is an odd number of characters long), and runs the two characers through MD5, taking the first two characters of the returned hex string.

The result? A returned character set that's pretty much untranslatable (since there's less frequency analysis - there's 256 hex combinations, but 702 combinations being fed into a non reversable function), but constant between translations, so that if you see a translated string pop up in the same situation all the same time, you can feasibly spot it (EC-74 over the item store and the weapon monger could probably draw you to see that EC-74 means 'shop')

"The Quick Brown Fox Jumped Over The Lazy Dog" is always returned as "5B-3A 9F-DC-A5 19-9B-8D C0-02 1A-C9-4E 2E-1B 5B-3A 6B-DA C2-DF" - so your players can eventually recognise that 19-9B-8D is 'brown' when it pops up in sentances they don't understand - and since there'll only be a maximum of 256 different characters (00 through to FF, normally less since some combinations just aren't returned through laws of probability), you can easily replace these with katakana or runes or whatever non roman alphabet item you wish to represent the foreign language with.

And since you can salt MD5, you can make a lot of different languages easily with no basic correlation between them (00 in unsalted represents MH, OE and WL, but with a salt of 'kaynese' it represents EP, TB and YP). Throw in an extra function to change the word order of languages you don't understand representing a grammar shift, and you've got yourself an entirely feasible in game language system.

I like this toy a lot. And it's practically pointless except for that specific application of it.

That sort of thing would be really useful in a load of instances, though. It's not specific to any language, so you could use variations in any number of projects. Well done :)

Yeah. But there's very little use outside of turning words into hex pairs. Mind you, I'm starting to annoy serious coders by taking thier fancy (and old) encryption algorithm and doing things like this with it. Any tool that returns 32 numbers from 0 to 15 in the same fashion no matter what you feed into it is a VERY useful tool for psuedorandom stuff.

In fact, other than random seeding, MD5 remains my favorite trick for making numbers jump through hoops. Ideas I've had before with MD5...
- Character Creation for RPGs. Take a character's name and generate all your stats through substrings of the returned hash string. First one can be strength, second one magic... 32 seperate stats always generated the same way
- Level generation. Similar thing really... start off at a point on the far left and designate 0-3 as move forward, 4-7 as turn left, 8-B as turn right and C-F as move backwards. Make a turtle movie clip that moves through the MD5 hash string, plotting points as it moves along. When it gets to the end of the string, pass the string back into the MD5 cypher and continue. Once the turtle gets to the far right, or after a preset sanity check, draw from these points down to the bottom of the level. Instant new side view game, ala Worms.
- Waves of Enemies for Computer Games. Code 16 seperate wave patterns of 10 enemies each. Set each level a difficulty between 1 and 10. Every time a wave is defeated, load in the pattern at position in the hex string, with as many enemies as the difficulty specifies. Suddenly, you have infinate levels coded for you in the game...

+ I made a game with Glaiel-Gamer and a Kongregate employee called "Extreme Missle Defense X-treme 3D" just for the hell of it.

+ I rendered an old animation I did in ASCII, and submitted it to Newgrounds. It scored higher than the original animation.
