I agree with Kirk.. nothing is more annoying than people bumping up a resolved issue with either the same response or a solution to the issue that is blatantly wrong.

i try and lock them whenever possible.

If anyone sees people posting i would like to help but im doing something. let me know... permission granted to backseat mod on that one.. im tired of that too and im going to issue simple one day bans ... if they are so busy then they probably dont need to be nosing around a forum either.

im going to do them the favor of not wasting their time. I'll do everyone else favor of topics that actually deserve to be bumped be bumped.

Crap Control
On top of Luis's post, I have to add that you should NOT add to the spam by backseat modding within the thread... if you want issues resolved come to one of the mods. Threads usually get extended a good 4-5 posts after one person spams, then the next person backseat mods, then the next person tells the previous person they were backseat modding, and so on.

I'm always online on AIM with my "jmtb02" account since i am at work all day anyway. I am especially qualified at locking down crap collab threads because they don't require me to ban anyone.

And Summer is coming... any help you guys can provide us through that hellhole would be awesome too... it definitely feels like Summer already with the collab blitzkrieg that started in late January and hasn't ceased.

Ahhh.. summer.. the time where all the little kids come on and spam the crap out of the forum. Good for getting your post count up with all the 'WHERE CAN I GET FLASH THREADS!?!' and all that but also annoying with all the spam. Even more annoying for you mods I should imagine.

However I have a 10-12week summer holiday or something 'cause I'm doing my GCSEs this year :)
GCSEs = bad
Long summer = good
college = better than school :)

Summer

Honestly, the n00bs don't bother me too much, I just leave the topics be. Although the collab assault in the summer is always an issue. And if the current attack that seems relentless doesn't let up we might be in trouble.

Lotsa Collabs + Summer Rush = Oh Shi-

At 3/7/08 08:04 PM, ShortMonkey wrote: So, what do you guys believe in? The heliocentric theory (where the sun is the center of the universe and the other planets, including earth, revolve around it)? Or the other theory where the earth is the center of the universe, and the other planets and the sun revolve around it (I forgot the name of this theory)?

I don't think we can measure the center of the universe since we never found and probably never will find the edge of the universe, because it probably doesn't exist. Not only do I think the earth isn't the center of the universe, but it also isn't the center of our galaxy, or even our solar system. It has been proved that there are countless galaxies in this universe and they are all moving away from each other, and the center of most of those galaxies (maybe all of them, im not sure) there's a black hole around which the galaxy revolves.

At 3/7/08 08:21 PM, ImpendingRiot wrote: How can it be a 'theory'...we know exactly what it does :\

We DO orbit the sun... its simple as that.

Today, like all days on earth, we seemed to turn around the sun, so turning around the sun is still a fact. A theory however, is not the same thing. In this case the theory would be Newton's theory of gravity. With that we can conclude that if all the conditions are correct, according to the theory we will turn around the sun today, but we shouldn't have faith that we will orbit around the sun tomorrow. A theory is only a set of causes and predicted effects, if one day we discover we are not orbitting around the sun anymore and all the conditions were present, we drop the theory and move on. That's how science work, all the time we discover new facts that lead us to more accurate theories, science changes all the time and that's the beauty of it.

At 3/8/08 03:43 AM, ShortMonkey wrote: I believe that there is an end to the universe and whether the earth is the center or not, the other planets revolve around earth.

What makes you think there is an end to the universe? We have no scientific evidence that can lead us to any conclusion about the end of the universe, only the fact that the part of the universe which is currently observable to us seems to be expanding.

If you think planets orbit around the earth you're wrong except about the moon, which is our natural satelite. The only reason it "looks" like planets are orbitting around us is because our point of referrance is the earth. If you are on a fully blocked room in a train, with only a tiny hole through which you can see another train moving, how can you know the other train is moving and yours is still instead of your train moving and the othero ne being still?

It's a delusional lack of thinnking to assume planets orbit around us just because relative from earth we see sunrise in one side and sunset in the other.

We are both ignorant on this subject - how could we know the truth if even great scientists haven't fully proved anything yet either?

Science never claims absolute truth, only practical truth. Sure you could assume there's a possibility every single scientist in the history of humanity has been wrong, but by that same logic you should see no reason to desbelieve in the Flying Spaghetti Monster. In absolute truth, there is a possibility that the flying spaghetti mosnter truly exists, and every story about him is true, but in practical terms we assume it's useless to believe in a claim that has no evidence to support it. It seems more rational to use the theories of those 'great scientists' you refer to rather than claiming we can't know anything for sure so we should maybe just drink tea instead of writing theories about the universe.

The sticky should be made a larger font than the rest of the forum =P

In fact the sticky could do with a re-write IMO. It should mention there's a student edition of Flash available, and should have a bit about AS2/AS3 etc.

RE: Summer

To be honest, I couldn't be looking more forward to summer. Winter in Pittsburgh has made me a miserable human being, but today it felt like 60 and there were CLEAR BLUE SKIES! I went on top of my friends roof and looked at the skyline. Hell, I even took off my shirt! OUTSIDE! It was truly incredible.

I feel like it also gets me more into animating. Everything's so much more vivid! The cardboard collab is turning out pretty nifty so far, so I'm excited to have the another flash in the bag and a boosted BA (though it's kinda worthless nowadays...).

I'm actually working on another cartoon all by myself (my first new solo project since the Christmas before last). A couple of pals have been working on some really funny stuff, and I offered my services. We just finished a rough draft of the script. It should be finished by next week (they were on spring break this week, and I have it next), so I'm curious if anyone here wants to read it. I really enjoyed writing with other people again. I feel like it balances my humor out. I put way to many pauses and drawn out things in them if I'm left alone.

And yes, this still all relates to summer. i'll have boat loads of free time and the ability to make some really cool things if my life continues to thrive for flash.

RE: Useless Posts
I totally agree, and I thought that this topic might be a really good segway into...
Old Thread Revivals
Anyone else think that along with the useless posts that the number of two to three year old threads being bumped has gone up a lot too. It's kind of crazy that people think no matter what if they search for a topic and find a thread that it's new. It's true that useless posts are a bit more important to stop though.

Speaking of Bringing Up Old Topics...

Anybody remember that discussion about free stickers and boxes from UPS or fedex or something?

I need some stickers and boxes badly (helping a buddy move), and if any of you still have the link, I'd appreciate you giving it to me.

I'm going to try to hit Munich, Berlin, and Dusseldorf for sure, but nothing is really set because I'm just traveling around. Thank god you guys have an awesome train system. It will make traveling easier.

I did contemplate going to Amsterdam for a bit, even if I don't smoke (pot)... I definitely plan on getting shitfaced at the Hoffbrauhaus though. It's on my list of things to do with the Berlin Wall and the BMW Museum.

How I Wish I Could Remember Pi Easily Today
So all you coders out there, which do you end up using most often? Constant calls to Math.PI, setting a nice PI constant at the top of your Flash files to avoid constant calling to the Math library, or a rough approximation to the few digits you can remember off the top of your head (thanks to that amazing mnemonic above, I know it to eight decimal places) because whatever you're using REALLY doesn't need any higher level of accuracy?

Alright, this is really pissing me off.

i wrote (with help from soul-ed) a little fps engine for something im working on. It works fine, if you kill all the enemies it goes to the "win" movie clip, if you run out of time it goes to the "lose" movieclip. Only thing is, I want the engine to run again (with different level layout/enemies) once the Win movieclip has finished playing.

i figured a simple _root.gotoAndPlay("shooter2") would work, but apparently not, the movieclip just loops.

its pretty hard to explain, if anyone fancies helping me out ill upload the .fla for them, its only a few mb and id really appriciate the help!

ive never understood why they do it the other way round... Surely day / month / year makes way more sense?

On the other hand, we all do time as hr:min:sec, so in terms of magnitude I think year/month/day is more sensible. month/day/year is just silly in all respects though :P

Flash Job (sponsorships)

Ok, so I need to get a job this summer. I deliver pizza's on the weekend, which is great for cash on hand, but that money isn't really worth saving up because it isn't THAT much. So I need to get a job with a slightly greater income.

In the ideal world I'd like to pump out about 3-4 games over the summer and rack it in with sponsorships. It seems like just about anything can get sponsored these days and if I can go 50/50 with a programmer and make a dope game I'll be good money wise for a little while at least.

The main reason I need the money is because for the first time in my life I am living not under the roof of my parents, and not in a dorm. I'm renting a house in Philadelphia with a couple of friends for at least the next year or so. I'm more excited than anything, but that comes with a lot problems and responsibilities.

BASICALLY, this is a question to you programmers! What would you like to see in an animator/artists portfolio that would make you want to work with him? In the next couple weeks I'm going to try to put a couple things together to make a portfolio that I'll post online and hopefully a worthy programmer with like-minded ideas will want to team up over the summer.

Any one have any suggestions?

I'd continue work with Dan Fleming because we did Kitten Cannon together, but he's become somewhat unreliable with with nothing released in over 2 years I can't rely on him over the summer.

SO, what do you guys have for me?

Senti
Get some work into your account, as you said. People will look for your account to see what you have been up to... it's like an informal resume to a lot of developers. Developers are especially keen for animators for things that require animation... obviously... but most certainly for platformers and sidescrollers.

Luminara Aesthetic
Someone posted this a few pages ago but I didn't take the time to play it because everyone makes top-down shooters these days, but I played it today because it was frontpaged, and it seriously sucks a massive amount of mechanics out of my game... down to power ups and even visual style. Geez :/. I mean, I can be guilty for Four Second Fury infringing Wario Wares territory because they are similar in gameplay, but it's not a straight rip of graphics and game mechanics.

Hi there!

yeah thats what I thought. I mean, sure your game took a lot of ideas from top down shooters like Geometry wars or whatever, but you did it with your own style and unique gameplay elements. If this guy hasnt played your game or looked at the code then ill eat my own face.

Well, this is more of a working-with-others thing than anything else, but I generally get annoyed as a coder when people want to discuss projects on MSN. I'm not unsociable or anything - I'd just rather there be a clear distinction between work and friends. If I'm going to work on a game with someone I'd discuss things with on MSN, then it's going to be someone I actually talked to before we decided to make something.

Doing freelance work for purely financial reasons, as I really need to start doing now or else I'm going to be able to afford bugger all at Uni, is a situation where I'd rather have instructions clear and sent over e-mail so I know exactly what I'm doing. Not having someone breathing down your neck every time you come online is the whole advantage of being freelance and not an employee :P
