Allrighty, I think I misread it then. I thought you were criticizing the people who don't have making flash as their job with the 'Our range of people who do Flash professionally and/or seriously and/or legally is pathetic.' All I'm saying is that fun should be the decisive factor in making flash, not money.

Sadly, I have to do pretty boring flash work all day as a job if I want to eat or pay rent. The fun comes when I develop my own stuff in the evening, which I'm glad I still do.

I want this conversation thread to die still, but I want to get the final word in.

Yes, I actually DO believe the people who do this kind of thing seriously is thin, compared to Kirupa or FlashKit. Professionalism (as in, I've got to know it or I lose my income), Legitimacy (I should learn it or I wasted my money) and Seriousness (I want to learn it) give you an Appreciation of the community. One obviously can compensate for the other, and there are still a lot of people passionate about Flash who definately fit into at least two of these columns.

It's this kind of appreciation just how much some people NEED to be helped and how much a fairly content attitute towards people can go. And it vexes me seeing people who don't have that kind of love for the program or community give pathetic advice, enforce thier mercenary attitutes, instantly dismiss people with low post counts (god that was funny, seeing Waterman poked like that...) and generally do the kind of stuff we all complain about here that's "driving down the quality of the flash forum, making all the old regs leave". You'll never see me shout violently at anyone with that kind of appreciation of the community.

Never as glamourous as they made it out to be, is it?
At least I'm back on that slideshow / shopping basket program.

Okay. Happier, politically correct topics!

College Desk

We are still posting pictures of our desktops, right?

Right.

This is the desk of a student at an Art College. Half the time my bed turns into my "desk", but a picture of a crusty bed is hardly as interesting...

API Game Collab?

I'm thinking of starting a collab with games made only with API.. Anybody here who would be interested in joining if I did? Check out my latest news post for more info.

Taking back the forum
This was an interesting post because it got me thinking that with as much power as regs do have around here and how frusterated people are with things.. i think we could take it upon ourselves to take back the forums or atleast build nitches 'hooks' for more advanced users of flash. I think it'd be cool to have more advanced breed of collabs. Or maybe a thread made by an actionscripter of just cool actionscript based things on the web... not necessarily tutorials but just a repository of cool things out there to get peoples mojo's going... to really pick at the brains of users who are more advanced and looking for more advanced concepts of flash.

I had built something similar for creative types with the creative inspiration pool. But it could go even further to concentrating on maybe flash sites, or just flash animations out there, etc etc... i dont know about anyone else but i really get inspired by whats out there.. i remember looking at waterlollies and thinking to myself wow thats a neat way to do the light reflecting from the water let me try that.. had i not looked at that animation i probably would have never gotten the initiative to persue it.

As I previously mentioned, having a thread with events/conferences related to flash would be useful... maybe a thread where people doing flash professionally could discuss some of the growing pains, or pitfalls, or even perks of the business side of it.

The sponsor review is a great resource for example.

AS: Main... while sort of toooo big for its own good is a good resource nonetheless... anyway the point of this post is that rather than bitching about how much the forums suck we could really take it upon ourselves to help everyone grow and maybe grow some ourselves...

meh maybe im being too optimistic but itd be refreshing i think to start seeing more advanced threads out there than how to get flash.

I think that this makes a lot of sense. I find the forums really boring these days and I don't come here as often as I used to, more interesting threads would definitely change that. A thread kinda like the creative inspiration pool but with actionscript-related stuff instead would imo be awesome, as well as an equivalent for the animators on the forum :)

Taking Back The Forum

I agree! There should be certain places just for advanced users, and places for the newbies.....they should have different sections for it. General Flash, Beginners Flash, Advanced Flash, etc...

Nah i dont mean literally restrict people ... just the threads would be aimed at a more advanced level user.. like you wouldnt cover how to do a tween or something... if someone thats very new shows up fine, but they would be very lost and it'd be his fault for wandering in...

i dont think we need to be nazi about it.. i think users are smart enough to realize what threads are all gibberish to them.

Excellent idea. I would definitely take part in such a thing.

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2007-11-13 17:12:37

i like that idea.

although really coming to think of it, it wouldn't really just be actionscript, when you start delving into really advanced stuff you tend to go into the abstract realm of doing things that aern't really about actionscript but programming in general where actionscript becomes simply the tool (and often a restrictive one)

aaanyways, yeh i think its a good idea :P it can be for... well advanced programming, so it can cover everything from complex algorithmics (simple path finding at the lower end up to things like evolutionary algorithms and neural networks) and things to do with physics programming, its an advanced area which isn't often touched upon in flash (although i might be a bit alone there >.>) 3d programming etc. The use of Hydra the pixel shader language for creating filters in the next version of flash etc.

am i possibly aiming a bit too high here?

Not to high, i just think that i could never make that thread myself and give it justice :P

But yeah if anyone feels up to making a thread, even if its too advanced ... who cares.. you just want to pick the brains of someone who isnt a noob for a change... or even still its often cool to have people ask you how you did this or that...

Holy mother of god, that was amazing. I've never seen that sort of thing in flash, i wonder what you will come up with next ;).

Can you even use those in flash yet :P?

API Collab

If i can find some time i'll gladly do a part, i've never done a full API game, but i'm pretty good at API, and at making a shooter, so i'll just combien the two ;).

Hmm... i like the idea. Why not get tom to make another sticky thread in the flash forum, named network news or something similar. Then Regs (2000+ posts) can post news in there, which will be submitted to a mod, verified and added to sticky. It'd be a nice way to seperate the more '1337' coders and animators from the questions that pop up every ten seconds.

Forum Intelligence System

I was looking around facepunch.com (for gmod) and i decided to sign up to get some critisim on a map i'm working on, blah blah blah. Anyway, they have a rather neat system set up, basically, each post you make is assessed for spelling mistakes, swearing, etc, and you are either given or get taken away 'smartness points'.

When you sign up you have 5000 or so, and by posting good posts regularily, you work it up, which lets you make threads. I think it's a good system, but mabye to formal for us folks. It would help filter out the idiots, but it would also suppress people who genuinly needed help.

Whady'all think?

Some Inspiration
A little off topic from the 'taking back the forums' thing but this might lighten someone's day. It's just some guys art, but it's amazing. I suggest you go through all 7 pages of the topic. Even if you don't get inspired you might learn something. He shows the steps he took to do the drawings ( in the later pages). Just a little find that I found fun :p

Wow man that was awesome. When he talks about COW I assume that's not the Creature of the Week in the art forum but one the same on another site? When you see the images broken down, it gives you the inclination that you could do that granted you had the time and photoshop skill to pay out. TY.

Btw - you could of done with posting this in the creative inspiration thread.

Impromptu London Meetup II

So like in 2008 my birthday lands on a saturday (Jan 19th for anyone getting me prezentssss).. My vacation days will be fully refreshed and ill be free to travel again. SO

I had a great time last time in London and I was thinking of throwing a little meetup together.
Perhaps something on a smaller scale than what we did in Sept so we could move around more efficiently, maybe less formal.

Maybe introduce some newer people who werent able to show up in sept. or even just an excuse to not totally lose touch. It'll have been almost half a year.

hmm, no offense to any of you guys, neither am i attempting to break your positive attitude, but...

Everytime we've proposed an idea like this, it never gets through. I remember well the time when we were gonna make a small lounge for tutorials, with actual teachers giving actual classes, the coder was gonna be ... um... grah, name doesnt come to me right now. Thing is he doesnt even come to newgrounds anymore.

I also remember the actionscripting thread where we would go and chit-chat about techniques and all and discuss some rather interesting and advanced topics, went downhill pretty fast.

There was also that one topic where you would ask someone to "compress" your code, or shorten.. whatever. And it was pretty cool! It just... died, too.

There's been great ideas over time, thing is, nobody takes the time to execute them to perfection, or to keep them up.

Again, not trying to kill the attitude for you guys, just saying we should put some effort in it this time. :)

I'm all up for reviving this forum if you ask me, boredom made me leave too. I remember when there were a lot of stupid topics like when hashbrown was UOTD, and we all celebrated etc... it was pretty fun back then. Now i feel this is... dull. :P Im not complaining, I know you've gotten into this topic like one million times. Just saying this is why i left... I didn't find it fun anymore. It was dull and boring helping people that most of the time is ungrateful. So i'm all up for reviving :D

RE: Blaze

Well the problem is that people want to be part of change but people dont want to take things by the balls and drive change.

I mean take for instance london meet... it took a faux-mexican guy in the united states to get people across the atlantic ocean to come together... sad isnt it...

but yea... if people just realize that they have power and ill back them up if need be itd be cool... it gets draining leaving it all on the mods... or tom to make a sub forum.. or whatever...

Cannibal Holocaust

Has anyone here seen Cannibal Holocaust? I watched it tonight simply because it has the reputation for being THE most controversial movie ever made. It certainly is the most graphic movie I have ever seen. It was VERY well made but it isn't really the type of movie I can say I LOVED. It was very good, but, you know...you kind of have to see it to have any idea of what I am talking about.

IMDB if you are interested.
