Check it out. Mac uses that kind of file format for executables, unlike the .exe extension that Windows often uses. Most operating systems have their own file format for executables, and aren't compatible with others.

Visiting Colleges

So I'm in the process of visiting and applying to colleges. Fun stuff. Anyway, I just got back from visiting Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. The animation facilities, traditional and digital, were very impressive, I thought. They had rooms full of Macs and PCs with enormous monitors and at night when students might not be using them they can be used for rendering along with their own render farm. They have their own printer on campus and every student is given a MacBook pro upon entry :D
Plus, it's right near the beach and warm all year round :)

I thought .dmg was the mac equivalent.

Anyway, my issue isn't simply that OSX has its own seperate formats. I'd just like it to be able to open .exe files too without installing windows onto my mac. Thanks, I suppose, to Windows' ubiquity, .exe files are used for so much. When a friend e-mails me from EA and says, 'Hey! Check this game that we were all playing at work! The boss says they're thinking about talking to this guy it's so awesome and original - you MUST PLAY IT!' and I simply can't, that's a bit annoying.

Ironically, the guy in question only uses Windows at work.

Please tell me that you are joking.

I hate it with such a fiery passion, I'm not sure if you misinterpreted my comment, but no I'm not joking.

macs

.dmg is basically our .exe with af ew exceptions. if there was a way to change all my software into pc formatting I would have made the switch a while ago. You can't argue with how much cheaper it is.
2grand for the lowest end tower is pretty hard for me to pull more than once every 4 years or so. Not to mention the speed is usually behind the pc curve.

For now I'm happy it runs everything I want it too just fine. And I bought a second monitor a few months ago so I feel completely and utterly set with my setup.

Yeah, it's really not all that great though. There are tons of restrictions on it and Internet is basically useless on it... almost every good site is blocked even from home. Also, we can't use excuses such as, "my printer wasn't working" anymore because we can just use the school's printers. The only good thing on it is adobe Creative Suite CS3. But they wont even allow us to install the wacom tablet driver...

Maybe you should try Crossover.

.dmg is nothing like .exe man, .dmg is closer to a .zip than an exe. .app is the mac's .exe, but the OS hides the extension ".app" when viewing the desktop and browsing files and stuff, so it's not as noticable as an exe.

Lol way to put me in my place,
All I know is that .exe = bad for mac and .dmg means it will work when its done installing =P

Most of the Uni's here in Australia allow you to put a laptop on your HEX fee, and they bulk buy so they're dirt cheap.

All restrictions can be removed.

Well, yeah but not without the admin password or physically tampering with the hardware. And it is school property so if the administration finds out that a student opened up his/her laptop they'd probably make the student pay for the thing. Otherwise, there are no loopholes believe me I tried everything. Even tried putting in the install disc to try and change the admin password but even that was restricted.

Can you watch porn on a mac. I've always wondered.... i have a mac but ive never used it...

In other news...

Ringling School of Design
That was my second choice of school i visited it and i found the area much too quiet and that side of florida is where all the old people are.. like near west palm beach and shit... i am a city boy and the idea of old women in bikinis was enough for me to pass on that school...
I dunno if its changed in all the years since ive been there but it seemed much more tailored around illustration. The animation was more 3d concentrated and i felt like if i did go there i'd have to decide wether to persue animation as an illustration major or a 3d animation major.. both bleh.

Aside from that I know people who've enjoyed it so go for it if you feel comfortable.

.dmg is like a "virtual" CD or flash drive. You mount it on your desktop and it appears as a disk, from where you can install stuff from or take files out of. It's not an installer, it's like a downloaded CD.

I honestly don't know why companies use it instead of zips, cause macs can decompress zips just fine...

To get around Internet restrictions you could use a proxy. www.peace-fire.org I think makes a load, we used them at school. But you know someone will know the admin password and more than likly they will tell you, if not a student try like work experience boy or an apprentice. But I have access to all teachers, students and admin account at my school. All from source-kid the apprentice ^_^.

Yeah the area is very quiet. I've lived in NJ right outside of NYC my whole life so I don't know if I could easily adjust to the slow-mo, laid back lifestyle of Sarasota. There was barely anyone outside on the campus when I visited...it was actually kind of weird. And yeah, there were a lot of old people in their Cadillacs driving 30 mph on the highway haha. It was weird when the cars actually stopped to let people cross a road. That never happens around here. And you're right the focus did seem to be on 3D animation but I'm looking to study Motion Graphics/Broadcast Design anyway so that might actually be a good thing for me.

MBot Review Delete Notification

I just got a PM from MBot, saying that my review on Waterlollies has been deleted (Image below). First of all I didn't even review Waterlollies let alone think that it was bad, yet my "review" was deleted. Apparently, this has happened to other people also, like ChromeShark...

Anyone know what's going on?
