Lip Syncing

I think the first one looks good and the second one looks better mostly because of the stash movement... Really it's all about making it look believable, because people will imagine it looking right, pretty much as long as it's open when it should be open and closed when it should be closed, just like in animation you can get away with a few key frames and rotating and skewing in between. I don't think Jeff even uses that many mouth movements in tankmen... for something like a small collab part it might make more sense to spend more time on the lip sync, when for something like a 3 minute comedy sketch it would take way too much unnecessary work.

I think it's worth it. I mean, Look how it pays off in Tankmen. Completely worth it.

Sometimes you can get away with looped mouthings, but not too often. Also, the second sync looks WAAAAAAAY better than the first. In fact, the first borderline sucked.

that's the point... It's more about the body movements than the mouths themselves... I kinda just wanted to see how other people felt but it sounds like we're all singing the same tune. I'm not saying looping mouths but I'm talking about limited mouth shapes.

And coaly I get what you mean makes more sense to spend more time on everything in a short collab part (that was just an example of limited mouth movements with other moving parts and then more mouth shapes with no other moving parts)

I just wanted to see others opinions on whether or not with a set amount of time whether its better spent with body movements or complex lip syncing.

If I was just super redundent my bad =P

Time to get back to bed, fuck the flu

Well the first ones lip synching isnt right at the end... it needs the sss mouth movement.. the speech ends in physicssss and yet the mouth movement ends on an open mouth. The second one is synced correctly.

Lip Sync

I generally dont have problems with lip syncing in cartoons unless the mouth is completely off. Facial expressions is a big part like Luis said, if the character's mouth is moving but he has a motionless face/body its annoying. As far as animating it myself, I dont have much problems with other than that its boring and time consuming. :P

i dont pretend to know anything about lip syncing or animation in general, i'm more likely to create a simulation of a human vocal cord affecting a flow of fluid acting as the air and analayze the shape of mouth etc needed then match it to vowel sounds and consenats and make it do lip syncing automaticly

ofcourse im not at that level quite yet, but its an idea i have in my head

Frontpage

I agree with the feeling earlier that the 'prime' real-estate up at the top above the fold should be mixed movies AND games... it really does make a difference what is up on the screen the minute it loads.. and games do suffer from it because they are under the fold. I was talking to mogly about this not long ago, how the frontpage feels too stiff and unapproachable.. i liked the pre redesign fp which was organic and you didnt even know if you were going to look at a game or a movie.. it was more spontaneous... this is our best ng shit ... you digest it attitude... right now its so categorized and formal that its not that exciting anymore... it feels like im on training wheels.

FP
I like the sorting, but dislike the idea that games are below animations. And the ratio is fine with me, if you take the amount of games vs. animations that float through Newgrounds. 2 juxtaposed columns instead of two rows maybe?

maybe the sorting could be more subtle... like two columns but have em be like different shades... it really bugs me that i need labels to tell me these are GAMEZ moronnn..... ok i gave up a little ground for you jmtb. no more.

You don't TURN fab, you're BORN fab....

I think the front page is a little busy at the moment... With all the byte size and new submissions and authors comments, there's just so much going on....
I think eliminating the movie/games seperation might make it less disjointed... I take back what I said about the amount of games (I did say something right) I mean 10 vs. 12 is hardly a difference and as Jmtb said it does make sense.

Uh-oh... I smell a Nature vs. Nuture fight :3

FP is racist?

I agree with everyone, especially Luis' point. It used to be a Russian roulette of whether you'd get a game or a movie, but now it's like "BAM NIG! WATCH THIS MOVIE! NAH, FUCK GAMES, WATCH A MOVIE, K?!"

It's horribly unfair to the games.

What's even more frustrating is having to scroll to see who today's daily awards are. Regardless, I'm not going to complain because we finally got a fucking redesign after like, 2 years.

New sig

Epic. It's actually a penis, but you can't tell, so I'm sa... oh shit.>_>

It's from the manga "Battle Royale", and it's fucking awesome. All the violence and sex crammed into a 15 part series, complete with as much fucked up shit as you could think off.

Yeah man, the frontpage iskinda wack right now. All he Bytesize submissions kinda make you forget about the movies. And ya don't even think of the games because they soar down their that ya barely notice them. It just aint to awesome because that.......... ,m//./, Game s take more time to makke because you have to to to learn progrraming and do all this AS stuff.

I'm withh Lu is . The old position mof the frontpages moivees and games were better. BUT in all honestly I don't care. Either way scroll down and check out everything. BUT I should really get bback to work on ,my own junk or I"ll nkever get a frontpage agiaAN.

..................Yeahh I'm a little screwed-u-up right now.

I agree. If one game gets on front page, its bound to spread to all the other 100,000,000,000 games sites out there. But user submitted content, games or movies, is what makes Newgrounds truly unique.

:U

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2007-10-16 21:04:26

FP

Yeah, I mean it should either be two columns or movies and games should be jumbled together. If it's based on rows, this just turns into a movies vs. games argument.

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2007-10-16 22:23:45

FP = Fulp's Penis?

I believe what the frontpage is and it's content should still be decided by Tom. His site, he can do what he wants with my games :3.

I actually prefer them seperated like that. I believe that most frontpage games get loads of exposure through sponsors and sites that even without frontpage they still get out there. Look at Indestructo-tank. Frontpage, Top 50, and loads of exposure throughout the web.

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2007-10-17 00:59:36

..::the page at the beginning of the site when you first get here or when you click on the tank area.::..

Well when the redesign launched Tom said that no matter where they put the games they still generate the same amount of traffic, so I think it works. I think if games and movies were in two columns the site would look really weird... like "Site News" = "Featured Movies" = "Featured Games." "Site News" shouldn't be as prominent as the games and movies, I like it being shoved to the side, with the three different Tom heads, and if you're paying attention P-Bot is right there to tell you what the five daily winners are. I think the new layout works.

Front page layout

Well, as someone who generally makes games I'm overcoming personal bias to say that I'm totally with Tom in thinking it's a good idea to give animations more prominence. Game sites are generic enough as it is, and as was mentioned, games are probably going to get a decent amount of exposure one way or another.

Campaign to Jumble the Front Page?

We should start a campaign to get the front page jumbled, so that the movies and games are all mixed together at the top, its really annoying how they're separated.

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2007-10-17 13:33:21

i think the front page should have the recent chosen movies, and then have the rest of the page filled ad infinitum with very mini icons of every single movie and game jumbled up.

yep.

Tom said it was because the games views out wayed the movies 3 to 1 or something which is why the movies are more in view

Other way around:

We are currently giving movies more space because the movie submissions outnumber the game submissions by more than 2:1. - Toms redesign post.

While I was digging for that, jmbt02, have a look at this. :)

Anyway, as for a petition goes, I was bored and a petition here is a silly idea. So I made this :D.

I'm a saddo lol.

Stephen Colbert announced last night that he is going to run for president. Some people are skeptical, but I think a lot of people really do think he is going to run. What do you guys think?

yes, and although i don't want to get hopes up, it DID show an AS3 interpretation of Doom? So does this mean that the 3d capabilities are full in terms of z-buffering then? If so im very pleased, and i can imagine myself using the Hydra filters to create per pixel lighting systems if its so :)

I respect the fact he's running for Republican AND Democratic parties, and is choosing to run only in South Carolina. I believe a lot of politics ends up being seen by the lay person as "them vs us", and people end up voting for personalities rather than policies. So having someone like Colbert run would be interesting, if only as a satirical gesture. Mind you, I'd also like to see him win. May as well have a professional comedian for us all to laugh at, rather than someone who just makes us laugh...

Plus he's got that important Comedy Central demographic already in his back pocket.

The C++/C# to AS3 converter could be interesting aswell. You could make tau'ri in flash :P. It's bound to have very strict limitations though, so i'm not getting my hopes up. Plus, who here bets that it's going to cost another $500 for a small(ish) upgrade :P.

Front Page movies/games order

I prefer the new layout, and I'm more of a coder/gamer than an animator/movie-watcher. I guess since I'll always scroll to the games anyway, at least I'm forced to have a quick glance at what movies are currently 'in', so I'll end up watching a movie or two which catches my attention, which I might not have watched otherwise.

Lip-synching
I don't notice that there's just a repeating loop of mouths unless I'm paying attention. Usually I'll focus on either animation OR sound when I'm watching a movie, so if a character is speaking, I'll be listening more than watching. When I'm animating though, I'll usually do lip-synching the best I can, recycling maybe 6 or 7 mouths, until I get bored and give up.

Gaming
I've been doing almost nothing in my free time for the last 3 days but playing Twilight Princess on my shiny new Wii, and I was extremely impressed by the fighting-off-giant-warthog-dudes-while-o n-horseback scene; it was something totally new, and I'd never played a level like it before. All of the cinematics in that game are awesome too, really dramatic and movie-like. What is your favourite level/scene in a video game, Regs?
