Can a kindly American reg please answer me these questions three...?

1) I ordered a lemonade in a restaurant and got this un-fizzy lemon squash stuff, what am I supposed to ask for to get a Sprite-like substance?
2) Why do you call 1-cent coins 'pennies' when a penny would in fact be worth 2 cents?
3) Are there any restaurant chains which will do all-you-can-eat ribs which you can recommend to me?

Good day to you sir.

1) What you got was actually high-quality lemonade. In Boston you call it a soda for the fizzy kind.
2) Beats me.
3) Chilis

How about..ask for Sprite. It's not that hard. Sprite isn't that good though. Try going for a Pepsi or Coke.

2) Why do you call 1-cent coins 'pennies' when a penny would in fact be worth 2 cents?

Because we're Americans. Why would you call 2 cent coins pennies? Something to do with pens?

Uh, not really many chain restaurants, but a few. How about you try some nicer restaurants and just get normal ribs. Those are really damn good. I think maybe in the west and the south there are a few, but there aren't many in the north-east near me.

Good day to you sir.

We say BYE in America....

Alright so does anyone out here who has AIM know much about making online games with like XML or whatever it is that you would use and putting it into Flash!? It would be really helpful if any of you would know by any chance. I have a bunch of questions, so could you IM me or even if you have MSN could you tell me in here and I'll add you onto iChat. It'd be really helpful. Thanks guys.

Flash as a Job
I'm planning oon doing Animation as a career (starting college very soon), but not necessarily flash. If i'm not mistaken, 2D animation is making less money than 3D animation,
1. Because of the new gaming era, which is basically all 3D, and 3D is hard to do.
2. I have heard from an animator that the Asians are doing the 2D jobs cheaply, so again, us Westerners are losing business in that area.
College
Anyone here starting college?
I have 27 hours of work a week. :/ Should be OK though, as the subjects a like, and i have an excuse to drop one if i dont like it.

Starting uni in a week, I believe I only have 12 to 18 hours of school a week, meaning that I also have plenty of time to keep my job and doodle around with flash.

1 penny, or 1p is short for 1 pence.
1 pence, 2 pence, 5 pence, 10 pence, 20 pence, 50 pence, 1 pound... etc

I could just as easily ask, why do you have dollars? Something to do with dolls maybe??

Oh yes. Because other countries name thier coins after what they're worth in the UK... ¬_¬

New UK Regulation! We can't call them pennies any more... we've got to call them euro-cents-and-a-half

Americans just call thier single cent pieces "pennies", just the same way they have quarters and nickels - it's a name for thier coin. And we stole the metric currency system from them and Europe when we decided shillings were a stupid idea.

The word, "dollar" has been synonymous with money since the Roman times.... Apparently, we used to call five shillings "dollars" too...

That's exactly where I was looking :), too bad it doesn't really give a short subcription on how the name originated.

Looking for Group/Webcomics
This has to be my favorite webcomic at the moment. It's a brilliantly drawn, continious story with a good sense of humor. They also made a short animation and I believe they're working on a full length feature as well.

What's your favorite webcomic?

Re:Looking for Group/Webcomics
..Can't stop laughing at the short.

The Line Tool Is Your Friend!
When I first started out with flash I used the line tool a lot and never drew anything with the brush. Then I startin' thinkin' the brush looks better but that's only if you have a Tablit or are a 1337 mouse artist. When I use the brush tool everything always came out sloppy. So now I'm returning to my ol' line tool. Mixed with some brush for crap. Anyway I finally think I've found my own way of animating my characters. Still working on it though. My first batch didn't even have legs or layers. Second was based on the Super-Flash-Bro's style. Third anime mixed with Pico style.

All in all I think I've really improved this last 8 or so months. Too bad schools startin' soon. I won't have much time to work. :(

Re: Web Comics

As far as they go, I tend to only read one or two.

I read Aoi House on http://www.gomanga.com because it's funneh, but I try to read VG Cats between their dilapidated excuse for updates. I used to read Chugworth Academy and Explosm/Cyanide and Happiness, but Chugworth died (?) and I just tend to ignore Explosm and read up on it in large bulk.

Webcomics
You know I've never really like them nor have I payed attention to them. I may start a little more now, but I don't really find them very entertaining. They'd have to be relaly funny for me to really care a lot I guess.

XML and Server Help!
Please someone who knows a little bit about XML and Servers for Flash and about Multiplayer Games, could you please help me. It's really confusing, but I think I get some now. I'm just trying to find a server I can practice a little bit on.

Alpha of new AS3 game

A new game made in AS3 (for speed) I've been working on: tanks (working title). WASD to move, mouse is shoot. The best bit about this is that it generates the entire level by converting a movieclip into a bitmap data, then it analyses it, and creates everything from that (even the baddies and the player). Because of this, I might need level creators for the game.

And also, just did a massive update to my site; please go have a look.

RE: Make my cartoon

I'm fine with them, ill generally ignore them but its one of those things thats a long shot for people who dont flash and its not a bad thing. I dont think its fair to give them a hard time about it.. They are excited to share their idea and hope someone bites and thats okay.
Doesnt mean you have to read their thread much less do it so its kool. I like that people dream and are excited to work with talented people even if its a long shot.

Looks good so far, it's running incredibly smoothly for me :). When you say about bitmap data conversion, does your engine indentify colours as barriers/walls/scenery etc? That would be good for level creating, it'd give the payer much more freedom.

Anyway, looks nice ;).

Make My Cartoon

I don't like it when people try to make a crap story, get an artist to do it, then they demand they take all the credit. However, it's alright when they've actually thought about what they want to do, and they've put some effort into it, before handing the job over.

I suppose a collab is similar, but on a larger scale. Some people want to start a collab, make a quick menu then take the daily award and 40% of the sponsorship cash. Whilst others try to actually work with the co-authors.

Rebels

After winning out independence from one of the world's super powers we're allowed to rebel... you damn well better not limit OUR TRADE AND MANUFACTURING!!!! and clearly OUR system was based around the perfect amount for drinks.

A pint of beer, 11/2 cups for a soda, 8oz of coffee... while yours is based off things like "ease of measurement" HA!

2 cups to the pint 2 pints to the quart 4 quarts to the gallon. 12 inches to a foot 3 feet to a yard 1760 yards to the mile! makes complete sense (63360 inches per mile) YAY AMERICA!

lol

I'm cool now... Right guys?... Guys?

Contest and Sponsor?
Does anyone know what would happen if a game got sponsored and was also submitted into a contest. Lets just say it was the Armor Games contest, do you think that you are allowed to be sponsored. I can't ask Dan because he's on a honeymoon. It's just so scary to put stuff in a contest if it's not ensured money or anything.

Re:Contest and Sponsor?

That's a touphy... Like Parie said, ya if ya lose the contest ya probably can be sponsored. 'Cause I don't see someone wanting a cartoon to win one of there contest when it's been sponsored by a rival site.

I entered the B.C. Student Film Festivial and submited a 'toon of mine I made in a hurry 'cause the stupid due date was pushed up a month. Anyway I wasn't sure if I could submit it on NG or not but hey the contest doesn't even start until May 2008. So I uploaded it and it got a 3.50 and now I laugh at how odd I use to make things back when I started out with flash and how it got one of the best scores I've ever had. :P
