Yeah, I'm sure I've done it, but it's true, we all do it all the time, it's a little sad.

haha.

Anyway, let's discuss Flash as a job/freelance work with Flash. Who here wants to do Flash for money instead of just making Flash for fun? I do it for fun as well but doing it as a job would be good for me, I think.

Yeah, I love to do it for both money and for fun, but it's just so much more motivating when you know there's a cash reward in the end.

Flash for money

I'll probably end up making some games over the course of the next year, and if I want to get them sponsored, I'll probably make some money off of that. However, I'll (skills willing) be going to school next year to start learning the ins and outs of traditional animation, and hopefully work out a career in animation in some form. Flash is a great program, but after all, it is just a program. The more flexible I am and the more I know about the fundamentals, the easier it'll be to carry it over to different mediums/programs. I can't see myself just doing freelance stuff with Flash though.

As for doing it for fun, I don't enjoy so much the animating part as I do seeing the results, as I'm sure it is with many others :P

BMK

I don't know if I should have "bolded" that but I was trying to get your attention. A long time ago, god I dunno like months, we were in like a time trial cartoon contest thing here. So you remember the name of it? I just remembered it and I was curious.

New computer

I'd love to pick up a beefy dell or whatever seeing as it's about half the price as a mac, but all of my software is mac not to mention I think windows is a terrible OS (no offence in my mind its just clunky and annoying to navigate). I want my buttons big and in nice little categories in a finder =D.

Once mac realizes they'd make more money if they allowed for third party computers simply by selling the OS I'll be overjoyed.

Hey guys. I just have a quick question, but I didn't want to make a whole new thread for it...
In the course of your flash-sponsorship-seeking travels, have you ever found any that will sponsor songs, sounds, or other audio tracks?
It seems unlikely that a site like that would exist, but man, that would be awesome. :-|

Preloaders are fun to make I guess. It`s cool to see what some folks come up with. What`s the coolest preloader to ever catch your eye? I always liked the Weebl & Bob one with the spinny thing get spins faster the more it loads. :P

Stick to keeping it as a hobby. I get home nowadays and can't stand to turn the computer on any more, and when I do, I spend most of my time on MSN chatting to people like Moose about how I need to do more work for this Portal...

If you're prepared for it, then more power for you. I've never had a more interesting job, nor one where I've worked as fast on the workload presented to me. I've had to build a slideshow after a banner image after an entire Flash multiuser game. But the stress is high when I've got to learn things I've never encountered or cared to before, or have to redo code that I've never touched and makes spaghetti look organised.

It's an amazing career, and pays comfortably (although I got very lucky landing this one, I wouldn't put it past anyone in this lounge to be able to land something like it), but the stress is immense if you let it get on top of you

That kinda attitude is ruining the sponsorship industry. If you only make games to get sponsored, your obviously going to do lots of mediocre games, because it means more money. But because of that, you're lowwering the sponsorship price for everyone who wants to actually make decent games, as sponsored games would become 10-a-penny.

Sponsorships

At 8/29/07 06:26 AM, trig1 wrote: But because of that, you're lowwering the sponsorship price for everyone who wants to actually make decent games, as sponsored games would become 10-a-penny.

I personally want to make a game that'll win the Independant Games Festival's Best Web Game category, and compete in Armor Game's contests just to see where I stand in the leagues where hundreds of people are competing for big cash prizes, just because I want to see where I stand. The money would be awesome, but I have real job for that.

I'd like to know just HOW the Armor Game business model can even work at the moment. So many people after sponsorship, and all these prices I've heard are in the four figure region - how on Earth do companies like this stay in business

Anyone with some inside information? And possibly AG's account records? ^_^

It's probably that the prices you hear about are for the 'good' games - ones that people put their time, effort and most importantly - hearts - into making. A lot of the mediocre stuff which people fart out for sponsorships generally end up with much more disappointing offers, or just being redirected to the competitions.

Flash Jobs

I'm working in a flash job right now, its awesome. I was really lucky to have Flash to fall back on when it turned out a degree in physics isn't as useful as it would seem, some of my friends still havn't found anything at all.

That being said, we actually have a position open for a AS programmer, so if anyone wants the link, give me a shout. I guess you'd have to be about as good as me at AS2, but 21 or over.

Hope Luis doesn't get mad at me right before our big date next weekend >_<

I thought the Games Industry wanted programmers with a good grounding in computing and Physics degrees nowadays instead of people with Game degrees? I always thought Physics was a good solid choice at University for anything in the tech fields.

Is it paying more than I'm currently getting? ^_^

I'm a decent coder (but don't look at my games - look at my site if you wanna judge how good I am).

I'm not 21 or older though - I'm almost 15. I don't see why that would make a difference though.

RE: Flash Jobs

Meh, I wouldn't dream right now of going into Flash full time. I much prefer being able to work on my own stuff while I have free time. I'd get really paranoid if I had to work at it full time and depended on actually being consistently good at it :P

That said, if anyone wants a little freelance coding doing feel free to get in touch.

I don't really know for sure. Sometimes I find a way to integrate them or just toss 'em.
RE: Flash Jobs

I want to make flash, get famous, sell crap off it, and get rich. Pretty unlikely though, but I don't care. I'll probably just end up doing something boring for a living. :-(

Game Studio Sites

Now this is a shoutout to all the people who have sites for their game studios. I don't mean like Armor Games, Addicting Games and all that crap, I mean like if I had one for just all of my games and stuff. I have a few questions for you guys. The first question is how much do you usually have to pay for those sites. I mean I tried a freeweb one but it's not very good and I'd rather have a really good looking one. Secondly, did you do it, or did you get someone else to do it for you. I would love to learn how to make sites, but I'd rather it look professional than do it myself. Also, is there a real advantage to it. I mean, you don't really get paid unless you have like a donate button or something, but even that doesn't get you much. I guess it's pretty cool though. Lastly, does it really get a lot of views and help other people see all your flash. I mean they could just look up what you have on newgrounds. Tell me about it please, I'd love to know!

After Effects
I posted this before but with no replies. This is kind of a bump. If anyone uses After Effects at all. I would appreciate some help with nooby stuff so i can learn quickly sorta thing.

Websites
Websites are generally really cheap to buy, and 100 times better than free ones, if you know what your doing, its usually around $9 for a domain and hosting ranges from $8 a month, but buy yearly and get huge discounts (discount codes are easily found, if you need one, pm me (dreamhost)).

I'm just kidding. I started Flash because i'm bored, and I wanted to do something with a challenge and makes you feel good. Actually, it was originally because I wanted to make games, but I figured it would be easier to start by making movies. Now I have a greater passion for movies rather than games. Although there are a few game ideas up my sleeves...

Flash Jobs

Yuk...
Best advice I've ever gotten is to never make a hobby a career, it loses the magic. I would like to go to a school for a traditional BA that allows me to take a few art classes, and possibly a grad school that allows me to do the same... if that exists.

But for a few of the proffesions I COULD see myself doing specializing while getting your BA is generally considered worthless... In general people won't care what you majored in or even what school you went to for your bachelor's degree.

Depressing I never really planned on going to grad school, it's starting to become more and more necessary though to land a stable job out of school.

And to short on your site I'd recommend making some dummy examples that well... look better, the one on there looks pretty sloppy and lonely... would definetly attract more people if you were to ad some unpaid examples of high quality.
(I'm talking about the banner ads section)

One job in the artfield I could see as being fun would being making indie and popart tshirt graphics putting art on fabric and having someone wear like more to me then someone just looking at it.

I don't quite agree. I've done Flash as my job for the past three years, and it's been as fun as it was when I started. It's a matter of personal drive and opinion... not necessarily a single right answer. I know people who have been doing what they loved for years, and they won't give it up for anything.

Flash Jobs

Man, if I had a chance for a job in flash I'd take it in a heartbeat. Even if I was a bloody janitor in some flash companies office I'd still be happy. The reason I'm makin' toons/games is because A) It'll look good on the resume if their's a lot of past work aka experince, B) I might get lucky and make a successful series or somethin' where I can either win money from, get sponsorship for, or sell merchindise of it, and finally C) (Here's the corney one. :P) I wanna make poeple laugh by doin' what I enjoy doin'. :)
