The only things Flash can't do that MS Paint can do is open faster, be uber pixelated and be shit overall, MS Paint is only good for pixel art.

MS Paint is not good for pixel art. If you're going to do pixel art, use photoshop. So much easier.

MS Paint is only good for doing 8-bit art. Nothing else.

Your lines are too soft, Cyborg. Like your smooth buttocks. You need to make them rough if you want it to be MSPaint. Also so the fill tools will work properly.

At 10/28/06 08:52 PM, Mogly wrote: Actually, just thinking about that maybe the narrative doesn't take such an imortant role when classifying games. For example you wouldn't describe GTA as a 'crime-third person shooter' because the 'third person shooter part is the most important. Maybe this is an opening for newer games, to look at other media genre classifications and judge from them.

Storyline is optional in games. There's a reason you can skip all the cutscenes. A lot of people simply don't CARE about the thinly veiled storyline in games. Oh sure there are plenty of people who do care about it and enjoy the crafted plots and gorgeous FMV cutscenes that companies used to spend a fortune on (I'm one of those. Most fans of Final Fantasy games are), but by and large a lot of people are into gaming to play the game - not to watch a film they've had to jump through hoops to appreciate.

This is largely because the storyline is tacked onto the gameplay. It can't function any other way at the moment - no one's tapped the market of interactive theater where the crafting of a story between characters is the actual goal of the game (bar The Sims. And even then, the story isn't what we'd traditionally define it - it's more like a documentary...)

It's not "the play's the thing". It's "the game's the thing". We play to play - not to watch a movie. We watch movies for that. So whilst it could be argued that movies have evolved to a point where they can entertain on a variety of genres and settings and feels and tones, they still function just as they did when cinema was first invented - sit in front of the screen, eat some popcorn, and watch someone else's story. Games give you the opportunity to BE someone in someone else's story - to take a more active role.

Maybe the evolution of both media is to be given the opportunity to change those stories...

This is your story... [/is slapped]
What about flash games though? There aren't as many openings for Third person games etc. Time is more important because of the whole coffee break element of flash games, limited controls maybe class the game as being more difficult etc. Thinking..

Oh no. I think we get it even worse.

We may be a melting pot for new and twisted ideas because of the affordability of our medium (which would you rather pay for? Flash or a Games Studio?), we're NOT the area that's evolving games to thier next level.

We're copycats. We take already existing ideas and make them our own (and normally under 10mb in size to boot). And thus, our audience's first response is "it plays just like Wario Ware / Broken Sword in 3D with cute characters / Streets of Rage with Kids / Metal Slug with Water Pistols*".

Most of our games don't even have genres. They have parent games. There's a lot of original stuff out there (Yay for Zuma and a lot of recent games by Kenney...), but by and large our audience seems to expect a free version of already existing games.

Maybe some of us will take more risks with our games to see if we can make something totally original.

Making something original isn't really a risk. If anything it's a safety net. Sure, a game you set out to make as original probably won't play as well as one that's 'a bit like that other game', but you'll make up for it in the brownie points that you get for appearing to be creative. Whereas if you take inspiration from other peoples works, or decide to settle into an existing genre, you'll be gimped by the horde of people who try to compare it to shit on consoles or by other people, and vote you down because your graphics aren't as good as whatever, or you didn't have the combo system that whatever did, or that whatever simply got there first.

People are idiots like that. They're wowed by fancy ideas like originality and plotlines because they sound like what smart people talk about, and don't bother to assess whether something is actually good in its own right.

True. People who aren't paying for anything DO like having something that people who ARE paying for thing don't have regardless of how crape it is...

But I'm still thinking that a streets of rage clone would stand better chance in the portal than the Evolution RTS game I've got floating through my mind...

Whats wrong with the flash portal btw. Im checking it out and the entire list of 50 is under judgement. When i click view all, i still see under judgement flash up to spot 86. This sux, alot of flash will be overlooked if this continues

Yea, noone goes to the portal anymore.
Seriously, after my game got through the portal it was only there for like an hour under the latest 50. So people only got to see that it had an "awsome" score for an hour, which is annoying, i only got 6 reviews untill i kept linking and whoring it as much as i could :P

Unfortunately that happened when I released my movie, so it only got about 350 views... Hopefully, with the new update, the list will be bigger, like 100 or 150, and hopefully newly released animations will be in the picture longer because of the dA/MySpace-ish features.

Cheers for responding Kayn.

That's intresting, alot of flash is just copy cat, and maybe that's wy originality is such a 'big thing' here.

It's intresting thinking about shit that you know but you can't define, we all know alot of shit isn't original but can't define why.

BTW, Kayn, story was just an example. What about other genre defining things, setting etc. How highly regarded are these when it comes to defining games. it's true the key word here is games, but I don't think these genres are so tight right now.

Here's where i'm up to right now. Have a look through if you're bored. It's intresting to read about
