The fact that girls like it is one of the reasons I find it so annoying. >:|

I think I make my parents cry a little inside, at least my dad. Ultra-conservative and a school teacher, he keeps asking me when I'm going to cut it.
Little does he know I'm working on getting it long enough for dreads.
I also plan on dying it blue, for shits and giggles.
Right now, The fornt goes down past my chin, my sideburns are ridiculous, and in the back it goes past my shoulders.
i had short hair for ages becuase i never thought id suit long hair then i thought what the hell ill grow it see how it looks now i have the kinda John Lennon hair cut where at the front it parts in the middle and is just at my lip and the back just reaching my shoulders.
i get called hippy all the time but i dont care what anyone thinks what i do i do for me so why should i care what anyone else thinks.
Re: Luscious locks of hair
For the last 2 years of high school, I had long hair. I was known by most people as that kid with the long, curly hair. Like people have said, it got me compliments from girls, who always thought my hair was awesome because it curled so much naturally, something that their hair apparently didn't. Some people even asked if I actually used a curler to curl my hair...
However, it came to the point where I was tired of being a lady from behind in public (it's amazing how many times this happened...) and the upkeep was getting annoying. However, it did let me sport a wicked ponytail during the prom. So much so that I apparently looked like a waiter/mafia hitman/porn-star.
...maybe we should go back to global warming...
Haircuts
I kinda need a haircut. I normally have it quite short, but i guess im starting to like having long hair. I wont have it mega long, jus non-gelable any more.

MOVING ON...
Ok we devoted almost a page to our taste in hair.. in a flash forum.. lets move on :)
Back to flash, I am interested to know what you guys make of the flash scene. Theres a mix of older flash artists and newer blood in this thread, where do you think the medium is heading? Are you happy with it ... are there things that worry you? Is there trends that you dont particularly like in the scene as its evolved?
I am a little uncomfortable with the comercialization of flash, its sort of like you had your own 'cool' group and then suddenly everyone finds it cool and they are forcing themselves in and sort of ruining it. Sort of like how a band is like cool when its not so popular and once its popular and butched by the mass population it becomes lame.
I hope the community trend to it stays strong, with all the money to be made via flash i hope it doesnt ruin people and make them smug..

Heh, I was thinking the same thing when I started to hear how many people in this thread have long hair, though mine is longer it still seems like too many. In a way that kind of says something about the community as a whole being similar in taste making their be a higher concentration of long hairs vs how there tend to be very few in your average crowd. I don't know if that means that flash has become a fad for a certain social group or if people who have an interest in flash also have other similar tastes.
As far as the flash I see coming into the portal, I've said it before but I think there has been a general decline in the quality of submissions and this may actually have to do with the commercialization of flash. I think many of the more serious artists think that Newgrounds is below them. Its like the site has become a showcase for 13 year olds with nothing better to do than submit some shit they threw together rather than what I once considered a thriving collection of artistic expression.
Flash Production
I think flash production is heading in the wrong direction.
What was once a community of developers doing it because they can, is now a community of developers who suddenly seem strapped for cash.
Q) Can someone help me animate?
A) You didn't say how much you'd pay.
Q) Do you want to make a game with me?
A) Yeah, we'll split 50/50?
Q) I made a flash.
A) Who is it getting sponsored by?
Ironically, people are now determining the quality of their flash by the cash value sponsors put on their game. I get asked all the time how much I make, and most of the time, I tell people that its not important. Because it isn't.
I may be an Armor Games developer, but I've been around since about 2001 in the Flash scene, when cash wasn't even remotely an option. But since the turn of about 2004/2005, the tides have changed dramatically.
But regardless, if there are people like CMG or AG to support Flash developers financially, I'll take it. I'll gladly take it, it pays the bills. And I am incredibly appreciate they are there. But its not why you should be a flash developer. Flash is a multimillion dollar industry now, and even more and more developers on jumping in to steal a piece of the pie.
I am also incredibly worried about new developers being scared away from animation, since there is less money in it. Personally, I never collaborate with artists, because I know it's the only time I get to animate or draw, which is my favorite part of Flash. I get questions all the time, "why don't you hire an animator? Is it because you want more money?" Nah, it's because I want to do the drawing :). When I get to design my own characters, its fun. I like drawing backgrounds and animating scenes. Games like Knights of Rock fulfill that part of me.
The industry needs to recollect it's community. It's turning into an super competitive, secretive community bent on making the buck. Development first. Money second. Find your inspiration in yourself before a 3-5 digit number.
Hi there!

I would tend to agree, but more to the idea that the quality threshold of a submission has risen quite a bit as well, which will naturally raise the expectation level of the portal as well.
Hi there!
I agree and I think people should do flash for the fun of it.
If you want to aim for some prizes as a bonus, that's fine, but if that is all you are doing and can't be proud of your creation after it's completion, then you're turning into what a flash artist should not be.
im pretty new to the flash scene and i decided to try it one day out of boredom but i really love doing it now and i dont care about doing it for money im not gonna lie though being payed for it would be great but thats not why im doing it.
and from what i see in the portal alot of people seem to be doing it out of boredom but not putting effort into it just do a few frames work and loop it. I know the only flash i have on newgrounds is shite but it was my first try and i think even though its crap you can tell i put effort into it. So i think the flash scene is heading in a bad direction with all these KK GG and all that or just random kids doing stupid 5 minute pieces.
And i also do think that alot of flash artists seem to have same intrests like someone mentioned earlier.
I remember when i started flash... back in the days of SFDT in '01...
I like the present better.

There are more and mroe sponcerd games and mvoie now, and more and more group who do such sponcering, making people want to animatie more to earn money, dispite their talent.. there's been a few games that've been spocnerd, probs gotten a fair bti a money but the AS was just lifted and mildly edited form various other games..
to be honest, at one point i will get my shit sponcerd, but not now, prehaps when i feel i am worthy of moneys for my work.. and even then, only if the work is really good.
Example:
Recently Brushed*2 came out and i was co-auther, that was sponcerd and my cut was 45USD.. i gave my cut to be shared evenly to the other coauthers.. mainly cuz i am generous but also cuz i didn't really care for my part ( done in a few days)... also the only way of getting the money was Paypal, which is crap...
but. say. i was to be an animator for tv or something < probs never happen> i'd expect moneys cuz then i'll be working to a deadline and have to aniamte amazingly well..
although, i use fbf and most flash based shows are tweenbased.. so... guess i'm fucked..

Yeah, I've noticed that too. I mean, I'm all for the support, no lie, it would make my life a lot nicer, but, I'm doing Flash because it's something I enjoy.
Like right now, I'm working on a game, but not because I want money. It's because I want to see this new type of game that I'm making. I want to see if I can do it. I mean, I'm gonna try and get it sponsored by Armor Games, of course, but I'm not doing it for the money. Even yet, I am working with someone for the AS, and I'm actually considering if we do get any money, giving him more, seeing as he'll have to do a fuckload more work than I will.
I am also incredibly worried about new developers being scared away from animation, since there is less money in it. Personally, I never collaborate with artists, because I know it's the only time I get to animate or draw, which is my favorite part of Flash. So why don't you do some movies instead of games? I'd love to see some stuff like that from you.
One of the other things I have seen that I don't like about the community is that a lot of people who are starting out and a really good are just quitting.
It just disappoints me to see people like Topz, who are so good it's crazy, just quit for no reason.
And then there are the people who are really good, but then they over broadcast themselves, like (I'm gonna get heat for this) Wonchop. I mean, honestly, Wonchop may possibly be the biggest collab whore on NG. Granted, he is a very good animator, but he's getting a bit over-rated, but not as bad as i-will-press (who is a fucking faggot >:C).
It may possibly be that I envy him for being that good and able to crank out cartoons in so short a time, but, I have definitely not been in the animating mood lately, which makes me somewhat bitter to not be able to do something I like to do.
Still, we were having a discussion about this on NGC. The NG community has somewhat gone down in quality.
I mean, take the front page for example. It used to be that your movie had to be fucking epic to get on FP. Now, almost anything can get on FP. As if it's not bad enough that the KK and the SS and the BB and all the other fucking groups pass their shit flashes all the time, there's just such an influx of crap that NG has lost some of it's awesomeness.
I would equate NG to banging a hot girl. When she was a virgin, it was rough, but it was still good and she only fucked one or two people. When she got a little more experienced and a little older, it was fucking amazing and she'd fuck the people who were good. Now it's a few more years down the road and she's gotten less attractive, caught a few STD's (KK, SS, etc.), and now she's fucking everyone.
Then there's the whole thing of NG is cool now.
When I signed up in 03/04 (This is not my first account), NG was still very underground. Hell, they hadn't even gotten the office yet.I never ventured to the BBS, but, it was a haven. Other people like me, with my same twisted sense of humor and semi-outcastness could hang out together on this site.
But now, NG is cool. I mean, I'm happy for Tom and everyone, but, it makes me die a little inside when I hear all the "cool" kids at my school talking about NG, like they actually know anything about it. Hell, I even had a Flash class this year (which was basicaly a study hall for me), and all the "cool" kids who took it were like, "Dude, I'm so gonna put this on Newgrounds when I get home!" and it's a fucking stick figure movie.
Like I said, I'm happy for NG for getting big, but now it's getting to be like the US. Everyone is invited and with the good is coming the bad.
I'm kinda getting sick of NG "being cool" and Flash "being cool". If it's so fucking cool, then why did you make fun of me last year for making movies with it? It's turning into a hypocrisy and it displeases me deeply.
I just wish there was a way to make things go back to the good old days...
I don't need the new layout. Hell, I liked the old layout, with the buttons right beside the logo and when you rolled over them they glimmered.
Take me back to before i-will-press had his little cult following of Foamy Faggots, before Adam Phillips had his shit plastered everywhere.
I miss old NG.
I fucking hate society.
And writing this made me think even more about how much I hate all those popular faggots who don't even know who Tom is, yet think Newgrounds is the most awesome thing ever.
I'm done ranting. I've ruined my own mood. I started out semi-cheerful, agreeing with jmtb about whoring yourself out for money, and now I end up with a depressed look on the flash community and my area.
I'm gonna go jack off to make myself feel better.</random>
Anyways, Who else is sick of NG "being the cool thing to do?"

Honestly... *flash back starts*
I wanted to do something in art in the future, as a kid. I soon wanted to be an Animator working for Disney or something. Than again, what are the odds of actually getting that job? I really don't want to make some commercialized flashes that a company assigned to me. I honestly, think I would loose interest making what they want and I'll miss making what I want. I want to do something in graphic designing rather than joining the bandwagon of full-time animators. I'll just stick on the independent route.
Are you happy with it ... are there things that worry you? Is there trends that you dont particularly like in the scene as its evolved?
One thing I do not like that takes places on Newgrounds, is the obsessive number of crews. The Glock Crew, Lock Crew, Clock Crew, anything that ends with the letters "ock" for godsake. It's bothers me alot, same with the old Barney Bunch Crew, and the KK. Or maybe even The Star Syndicate, along with daily toons.
Enough of naming them. It just bothers me of the various unworked submissions submitted by these flash artists and crews. I admit though, some are actually good, especially the Clock Crew's flashes. Like The Lord of Clocks Part 1a.
It just all depends on how you look at it. It just upsets me a bit seeing these submissions flood the Portal with nonsense, but hey you can't stop them now can you?
mr.blue eyes has left the builidng
Re: Flash Trends
Sure, I went on Newgrounds a few years ago. I watched animations, and that's about it. I would try to see everything I could- and it was all decent. I would watch animations that people had made for the sake of making them, not for the sake of making money and gaining fame.
It was fun. I didn't see anything I didn't like. But now, I go into the portal to try to play and watch flash, and I have to leave. It's almost like people don't care. Standards are slipping into a hole that keeps getting deeper.
I don't like where the Flash scene is going. As Radioactive said, it's starting to get "Cool", but when I think about it, that's not what I want. I want it to be fun and something that I can say I can do without somebody saying, "Oh, me too!"
So, yeah, Money, Quality, and... it being cool. It's all going downhill.
Sorry about the grammar, still watching College Basketball

Re: NCAA
Where I live, everyone is absolutely insane over March Madness. There are pools and small bets all over the place, with people doing very little other than watching the games. In fact, I am watching the Georgia Tech - UNLV game as I type this (GT is about to lose). March is probably my favorite time of year mostly because of the tournament.
And GT just lost.
Damn, I had them winning.
maybe alot of us like being different becuase like someone said before everyone seems to have the same interests like alot of us have long hair even though thats not considered cool and even though im new to flash i didnt start becuase people started seeing it as cool i only heard people say that when i started college i started flash a few months before that.
But maybe we just like being different and not copying everyone else just to be considered "cool"

I used to be called a "geek" for working on animations for my enjoyment. They used to tease me saying I'm a loser and such. My school doesn't have the Flash Program Class but everyone surfs NG at home since our school has it blocked. Than there are people that support me...my friends. After a while, I saw these kids surfing NG like it was a new chill spot, I was happy that it had so much publicity ..but than it got way too overdone.
I signed up to NG the beginning of January of 2005. I surfed NG as a normal 12 year old kid and than I got Flash. Wow, I was amazed. Making my first post in May of 2005 --- here. I asked to see what people thought of my work. Heck, I didn't even know what flamage was at the time. Hah, I posted my first post in the General section not knowing about the Flash section and that it lead me over to there. I used to type horribly, with about 2,000 grammar issues each post. And I sounded like an obnoxious noob. (:
I looked more into the Flash Community as I posted more on the BBS and It made me feel like it was more of a place I called home. Heh, I came home and checked out some topics and posted a bit... It seems like the Flash Forums run slow on some days with overbumped topics needing help with "How to stop a sound clip" from playing. And than there's those days that boost in interest; and run rather fast.
I really like staying on NG - Flash Forums since it's where it all started for me and I like to keep it like that. It has more interest to me, and I am appreciated people helped me in the past. It feels good to help others now as well.
Hopefully, the good old NG will come back one day, where kids go onto the BBS and NG for some discussion and interest rather than everyone becoming a Flash Artist. I wasn't here often, but I sure enjoy the old NG where I started my path at.
In Flash I didn't want it to be the cool thing to do, same with Newgrounds. I always wanted it to be something that no one else did around here, but now...more people are interested in it and it's bothering me...alot. Ehh...I'm done. :[

Cash Prize? I thought there were no prizes? Once again, the Flash Community has resulted more into money like contests. :[
Another thing that bothers me is the whole contest thing on Newgrounds. Yeah, it's pretty cool to get some cash for your flashes if you're sponsored or maybe even winning a monthly prize from Tom, but there are contests like "
Clock Day " and "Pico Day ". Sometimes it seems like people don't care about the background of the whole deal, and only care about cash prizes.
I for other hand, I join these contests not for prizes and awards but for the fact that I'm involved in something Newgrounds related. I like helping out and being active in the community. Also, I'm participating in The NG Sketchbook Tour 2007 because I want to be involved. Last year was the same thing when I particpated in the NG Sketchbook Tour 2006.
Just the Flash Community is so confusing. It's hard to take it all in at once.

Some of you here, your ideals about what you think this(or 'the') community is seems to outweigh the truth. Like, it's not a community it's some people who make flash.

Your not the only one. I started making mini flip-book animations using a book called "Christopher Hart's Portable animation Studio". I had always wanted to get more in-depth than... well.... a Pikachu getting bopped on the head by a floating piece of wood. After watching Decline (and other SFB stuff), I decided I wanted to do something like it. It never happened, but now I animate and do my own thing. It's like a dream come true.

Flash Trends/Tributes/Copycats/ect
as soon as one person makes a flash of such a nature it is 'amazing' and yet, easy to copy ( tankmen, madness, ect) everyone will look at it and say " hey, i wanna do somehting just like that"..
leading to hundreds of lame ass copycats.
and killing origonality :(
this goes for games aswell to be honest, with the free fla's and AS out there for downlaod, people just clone that and submit..
honestly , how many pong/tetris/columns/bejeweled/space invaders<ecty> submissions have you seen that have been the EXACT same..!?!?

i dont think any of the red nose day stuff is funny really mostly just cheesy sketches i wanted to see harry hill though because i like his show but it was just old jokes.
And i agree with lots of things just being cheap copies of something else unless of course its something like pico day where its actually based on that character if you get what i mean.
